Can anyone help or advise me.

I have a 12 year old schitzu that has just had to have his eye remove as he has just started fighting with my 3 year old Lapsu Apso. Costly vet fees etc etc. Just keeping them both seperated at the moment.

Lapso keeps snapping and I did try to give him away to people with no pets and no kids but the woman just returned him as he went for her rabbit!! (that she forgot to mention).

He loves attention but only on his terms and gets very terrotorial with me. I have heard of a pet rescue for them in Blackpool and not sure whether this would be a good idea.

Need the ****zu to have rest from this giddy, snappy dog until he is fully recovered or get a lovely owner that will understand his obvious psycholoigcal problems and take him from me.

Any advice welcome.

It sounds like your Lhasa needs a crash course in not being the boss in your house!

I'd have a giddy snapping dog in a muzzle before his little feet could touch the ground and have him in a crate to stop him from creating a problem with your other dog or the humans around him in the first instance, and then get him to a behaviourist to change his behaviour in the long term.

yes try a muzzle on the dog.by the sounds of it the dog needs a firm hand, you could try having him castrated to see if it makes a difference.or try some herbal remedy to calm him down, serenum drops would be best.i know what its like having a male dog ruling the roost,it can be a nightmare.my husband had to lay a few ground rules down he is good at that kind of thing as he has had numerous dogs when he was working in a kennel for rescue dogs.you can still take the dog to obediance classes, when you have had his bits off.good luck to you with your pets......regards.....

Hi

Thanks for your advice.
I did try to muzzle him but he turned into a maniac. The drops might be worth trying. Anything !!

So let me get this straight- you put him in a muzzle, he doesn't like it and throws a tantrum and so you take it off again?

That's part of your problem right there. You're the human and he's the dog. If you put him in it he stays in it whether he likes it or not. The more he learns that he can throw a wobbly and get his own way the worse things will get.

one thing i forgot to mention you could try a humane traing collar.everytime the dog displays bad behaviour you press a remote thing.it just sends small waves out to correct ur dog.its not horrible or anything and they are very humane, you can buy them on ebay i think.there not that much to buy.

I will try one, anything. I have been spoilt having such a lovely little dog as my schitzu then along came the nightmare and I just dont know how to handle his bad behaviour. Couldnt even get the muzzle on for fear he would bite me.

yes its a nightmare isnt it.one of my dogs used to fight when i put the muzzle on him and physically take it off himself and chew it up,more or less saying to me thats what i think to that.my hubby has tried the rattle bottle to halt bad behaviur.just get a old pop bottle and put some stones in it.or get one of those water bottles that squirt,a old washing up one should do.and when he displays unwanted behaviour just give him a squirt,he will be so shocked.keep at it tho so he gets the point.

to be honest though have his bits off,i know it doesnt always work but you try anything dont you.maybe hes got too much testosterone as well.just do that and implement the rattle bottle and water bottle and i think you will get good results.

It may also be worth trying him on a raw meat diet. My dog aggressive dog has been much much better since he started (it took about a month). I was putting it all down to our hard work in training, but the trainer I go to said it was as likely to do with the different diet he was having  People at training swear that they have seen changes in their dogs once they changed the food, so it may be worth a try alongside the training?

I will have a go at that too. You would think butter wouldnt melt in his mouth. I must sound a right wuss but he terrorises me. lol

Thanks

I have had a really stressful week with them. Took one to be put to sleep because of his injury, said goodbye then he came back and they were able to operate. I then said goodbye to the mad dog and then he came back. My stress levels are through the roof lol

Thanks everyone else for advice and tips.

Hello Peppie,
I do hope your stress levels are starting to reduce. If you're still experiencing problems I would seriously recommend a professional dog trainer - one that belongs to a professional body (eg APDT). You can google APDT and find a trainer. One that i can personally recommend (having been to different trainers) is 'People and Dogs'. They have been truly fantastic with me and my dog.

Missharlow - how's your little pup doing? I'm in the process of looking for another puppy - my current dog was house trained in hardly any time - I know I won't be so lucky this next time!!!!!!
