Hi Chuck, there was another sweet shop nearly opposite Huntsmans Gardens in the 30s to 50s -- Mrs Northfield's & one way up the end of Bodmin St I think that was Birkett's, not sure if I spelt that right, they had a daughter called Joyce

Hi I'm off Carlton Ville Road also - the tuckshop was run by Mr & Mrs Sayles - tall gent very military, Mrs Sayles grey haired in a bun with glasses, lovely people. Many a penny spent in there, 4 blackjacks, or a coltsfoot stick, or two halfpenny licquorice. Across the road near to Janson Street, opposite Cosy Furnishing shop was a cafe that sold saspirilla, (I worked for him after school) there was another one further up the 'cliffe' near to banners

My grandma lived on Goulder Place and my aunt and cousins opposite her.
I used to love visiting Attercliffe and can remember how much freedom we had. We used to play round the factories. I remember Banners and I also remember my grandma sending me for a 'two bob fry-up' from Olivers (I think) butchers or asking me to go t'chipoil for a fish, 3 lots of chips 'and make sure tha gets plenty o' scraps on it, use their salt n vinegar and save ours':hihi:

Hey

They were my grandparents!

Hope you liked those fish and chips as my Dad tells me my Grandad used to buy the best quality oil he could find, for frying.:)

Does anyone remember Arthur and Derek who had a fruit shop down there somewhere? I was very young so don't know what road it was on and a lady called Eileen who had a little sweet/spice shop on the Common itself.

In the 1960s I lived down Attercliffe on St Charles St and my grandparents lived on Clay St. I used to bike down Stevenson Road and stop off at the pop shop on Newhall Road for a little glass of pop, then I'd visit my grandparents. I loved 1d glass of dandelion and burdock. If I could afford it I'd have a larger glass for 2d. I also remember a beer off on Clay St where my gran used to take a jug to buy beer for my granddad and uncle to have with their Sunday dinner.

Hiya chimay, what were your grandparents names, I lived on Liverpool St n then moved to Swallow St, Happy Days :hihi:

They were the Cartwrights (no relation to Hoss and Little Jo). They had four children; Hilda, Kenneth, Ronald and Marilyn.

I didn't know my grandparents very well as we moved away in 1968 when I was 10 and I can't remember seeing them after that.

Did you know the family?

I do vaguely, remember the names very well. Can remember Ronnie as a big strappin bloke, glasses n sandy coloured hair? Married a petite lady who worked at Attercliffe Baths? Recognise the other names but can't put a face to them. Can remember roughly where they lived n have friends of the family who lived near them n will remember more about them. I was born 57 n left Attercliffe in 72 ............

Yep that's Uncle Ron. He married a lady named Sue. They never had kids. She passed away suddenly only a couple of months ago. I didn't know she had worked at the baths. My gran worked at the baths and I remember being allowed in early sometimes; it was amazing as an 8 or 9 year old to have the pool all to myself. I learnt to swim there as well. I was born in 1958and as I think I mentioned before left Attercliffe in 1968.

It would be great if you remember more about the family as only Uncle Ron and Aunty Marilyn are left now. I lost touch with the family when we moved and only got back in touch with Marilyn and Ron 3 or 4 years ago.
