View Full Version : Care about animals? Volunteers needed

Thornberry would appreciate some volunteers over the bank holiday.
They need people that are used to handling animals - and will roll their sleeves up and muck in with some work - actually caring for the animals themselves.

I expect the work will be needed 1st thing in the mornings, to let the dogs out for a walk - whilst kennels are being cleaned - and also some later on in the afternoon - to put them back to bed again after a walk.

I don't know what the set up is there - but if you are really able and offering to do some dog walking/cleaning/washing etc., - then please drop me a pm and I will put you in touch with someone who can tell if they can use you.

I know they always need competent dog walkers to give the dogs a bit of stress free environment and to stretch their legs on a walk.

(in your pm - please put down relevant experience and times available)

Hi
Are you still needing volunteer helpers?
I have two dogs myself, an Italian spinone ( Juno, 3 months old), and a cocker spaniel (Ayse, 9 years old), plus a goat ( Paxo, approx 16yrs old). I have had dogs all my life and have grown up with all sorts of pets including lizards, goats, birds, rodents, all sorts. I lost my older Italian Spinone Pippa in February this year, due to epilepsy. So have had some experience of taking care of ill pets also. I'm happy to help out with anything. Evenings or weekends would probably be best for me as I work during the day.
Let me know if I am any use to you. :)
Regards
Gaynor

I heard Thornberry's appeal for volunteers and donations on Magic AM recently.

Awful that rescue centres and sanctuaries are in such difficulties.

If anyone's considering PMing Rainrescue, I'd recommend it.

I help out at Cat Abuse Treatment Society and find it extremely rewarding. Admittedly, I'm disabled, but Jackie's grateful for what little I can do, which includes spending quality time with the rescued cats and kittens, and helping socialise them.

I'm not saying other rescue centres and sanctuaries are able to accept disabled volunteers, as it depends on their set-up and animals, but nothing puts a smile on your face like knowing you brightened an animal's life, even for just a second.

It's lovely to know that there are people willing to give up their time. I'm sure the animals appreciate it. :)

I get my satisfaction from helping traumatised cats learn how to trust humans again, and in so doing, maybe help them find their forever home.

At this rate, my Karmic rewards should be at a reasonable level!

Hi Gaynor

Yes Thornberry need you!! :hihi: There is an array of animals down there Pigs, Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, Horses, Ferrets, Aviery all needing daily attention and cleaning. Thornberry is desperate for help, particularly with the dogs and cats as they are going through a difficult staff shortage problem at the moment.

If anyone can help please PM either rainrescue or myself.

Thankyou x

Sorry I have missed the replies to this thread - been off line for a while.
However, thanks to anyone who offered their help and the people that did turn up to volunteer.

When I used to volunteer at Thornberry it was the happiest times I spent in rescue. Its a lovely place - and the ONLY place like it in this area, where there are actually staff there all the time to help animals in need - when they need it.

Its heartbreaking to think of a place like that struggling for donations of time and money - so if anyone can offer any help - please get in touch with them directly via telephone. Don't rely on emails or via the website, as I don't know how frequently that is manned - but the phones are manned each day.

thanks

I really hope it helps
I hope people continue to donate their good quality sellable items to their barn, that they give their time in whatever capacity that they can - be it fund raising, helping in the barn , helping in the kennels or the cattery - or coming to take dogs out for a walk or a cuddle.

Some people if they can just do home checks, or help with follow up or transport runs.
If everyone just does a little bit, and just does what they can do - it will help the animals.

Believe me - Thornberry is on its way back. Its got through a terrible patch - and I mean terrible - now it needs people who really care about the animals, who want to hep and not to bitch and hinder - to make a difference.

For all of those that will scorn or complain or moan - please - change those moans into action - and do anything you can to help these abused animals.

All funds now going into Thornberry are used for the care of the animals.
Without them - many will die - unloved and afraid.
Please do what you can.

Woops - well spotted on the number - my apologies - will change if i can.

I wondered how they were going for bric-a-brac and maybe we could appeal for more of that - or even helpers in the barn - do they have enough for that? I know thats one of the best way of raising funds and awareness.

I just wonder what we can do to be able to help them move more positively forward. So many small rescues are folding under the pressure. Many people are happy to bicker and slag off - so few actually roll their sleeves up and get stuck in and really help. Its help thats needed now - from many directions.

Lets try to get the support moving forward - for the animals - its we people that have all the issues.

There are some wonderfull dogs in Thornberry at the moment. I walked Candy on Bank Holiday Monday an adorable Staffy cross who has had somewhat of a bad start and the scars to prove it, aswell as the enormous teats, standard in an overbred dog. She is very nervous but is happy to be with those she trusts. The change in her when you show her only a little kindness, like a kind word or a stroke is worth the trip in itself.

That's not a very helpful answer!

There are buses which stop near enough - less than a five minute walk away!

what are the bus stops down Todwick Road for btw? Are they no longer in use?

Rainrescue

Isn't there some sort of link to the bus stations - which say which buses and when travel to there? You are right Strix - maybe if we put a thread up showing how to get there - it may open it up for more people - and its settled down more now that the road works have finished.

Hey, I ended up having a look at the South Yorkshire journey planner to see how to get there. It says the buses stop a 13min walk away. I'm going to pop down at the weekend to see how to get there, have a look round and possibly see about volunteering on a regular basis. I used to volunteer at Graves Park, and have been running a small zoo of rescued animals (lol) since I was v young, so I have plenty of experience with animals. I'm also unemployed atm so I have lots of time on my hands!

The bus service isn't too good, dependent on where you're travelling from. I think that is probably what Alverity meant ie that Thornberry isn't on a main route but it would be a good idea to have the information to hand to inform prospective volunteers.

I went over the bank holiday weekend and had a lot of fun. It didn't help that I fell for Snoop though, if ever a dog needed a home to curl up in, it's him! I'm not sure what my cats would think of another canine intruder and it's still going round in my head how much his story resembles Sophie's.

Does anyone keep up to date with taking the pictures of the dogs for rehoming do you know Fishpole? Taking pics helps people see the eyes of the homeless and hopefully find their ideal friend.

If not, maybe we could hunt for a volunteer photographer?

I'm having network problems Rain, wouldn't be surprised if the exchange is flooded with this downpour!

I got the impression photos were covered but the website isn't very up-to-date. It's boils down to time pressures I guess.

Sounds ideal Berkana you will love it.

There are a couple of ways to get there from Sheffield. One is the 23 bus which will take you to Dinnington bus station and then you have a ten min walk down Church Lane to Todwick Road. It is all flat and not a bad walk, it is quicker to walk from Dinn Bus Station then attempt to walk from the A57 Red Lion as there is no footpath part of the way.

Alternatively you can get a bus to Rotherham Bus tation and then catch the 19B to Dinnington which drops you at the end of Rotherham Road, Laughton Common outside South Yorks Caravans its only a 5min walk then.

I think the pics have recently been updated - and the site loaded with them.

Maybe there are ways we can promote the site more - in the hope of getting more of the dogs moved into homes.

Anyone else managed to volunteer?

Yes - those write ups from Cliffe will just never be the same - she used to make me chuckle with every one she sent because there was always a hidden comment behind certain ones, so that we could guess she had had seen a sneeky preview of a character in there.

Re the pics - Yes its a shame that sheffield pound didn't keep up with doing & sending the pictures when they said they would do isn't it. When you had got it into such a good practice too - maybe they don't think they need it the offer of the site?

One of the girls told me they were going to start sending them in for the site again - but they never did. Shame.

I think Thornberry have someone who does theirs for them, but I know Mayflower at Bawtry would welcome a good photographer if ever you are free - bit further out - but a brilliant sanctuary.
