AltyOwl 22-05-2009, 13:30 Does anybody remember all the Blades fans going to watch the match when Pele played for Santos at Hillsboro? Why just blades? My Dad still has his programme from when Pele came to Hillsborough in the 1950's, but he said a player called Pepe outshone Pele that day. Not sure if he went to the one in the 70's AltyOwl 22-05-2009, 13:32 Is there anyway of posting pictures on here from my computer? I actually have a few pictures of Pele playing at Hillsborough. There's a cracking photo of Pele with the Kop full behind him. I wish I was around when the Kop was like that, looked amazing. Will have a look on Owlstalk for them. mary moo 22-05-2009, 14:24 Why just blades? Not sure if he went to the one in the 70's I actually went to watch them in the 70's it was really good. I had Pele's autograph but with moving from Sheffield it has got lost in transit... damn canadablade 22-05-2009, 14:30 Does anybody remember all the Blades fans going to watch the match when Pele played for Santos at Hillsboro? Remember my Dad taking me. Also remember Pele scoring a penalty and Santos winning 4-2 but through the years and from what Geo says there were 2 matches against Santos and the scores aren't the way i can remember them being  I do remember Tommy Craig following Pele round the pitch like a lost sheep for the last 10 minutes to make sure he got his shirt :hihi::hihi: AltyOwl 22-05-2009, 15:25 Remember my Dad taking me. I think the 4-2 game was from the 50's, as my dads spoken about it numerous times, though he would have been quite young then. Did you got to both of them canadablade 22-05-2009, 17:52 Yeah, everyones mentioned that about Tommy Craig, don't blame him though:hihi: thats the one in the 70's though. The match i went to would have to be around 1973 ish and the score was definelty 4-2 for Santos. chuffinel 23-05-2009, 22:32 There was definitely a game with Santos in the 60's. My brother-in-law and I (both Blades fans) went. Can't remember the score but Santos won. Best player on the pitch was a young guy called Coutinho, was about 17years old I think. Remember Pele doing his famous "banana" free kick at one point. First time that I, personally, had seen the ball bend like that. Great football and Wednesday certainly didn't let Sheffield down but Santos were something else. steve1953 26-05-2009, 21:44 the first game against santos was played in 1962 and santos won 4-2,the second game was played in 1972 and santos won 2-0. crackerjack 26-05-2009, 21:55 In 1962 pele played for santos at hillsborough, pele scored a penalty he took a hop skip and a jump up to the ball stopped and then flicked the ball into the net past ron springett. I think he also played at hillsborough again that year for brazil . darbyswfc 08-04-2010, 11:34 Does anybody remember all the Blades fans going to watch the match when Pele played for Santos at Hillsboro? i dont no but i have a programme from that game. darbyswfc 08-04-2010, 11:35 Why just blades? Tobyjug 08-04-2010, 13:02 I wish I was old enough to have stood on The Kop like it was then. Not when it was lashing down with rain or snow in the middle of winter!! scoobydotcom 08-04-2010, 13:04 Not when it was lashing down with rain or snow in the middle of winter!! all part of the experience im sure! Back then arguing about who was the better team wasn't on the agenda so nit picking, name calling or a game of football usually got the matter resolved. My first reaction against any Wednesday fan is to defend my team and I hate everything Wednesday, when you were in the minority and fighting a losing battle its difficult not to hate you lot really (not personally!!!). surfinjim 08-04-2010, 13:51 Why just blades? The second, in 72, was played in the middle of the afternoon, on a Tuesday from memory, due to the power strikes at the time. Jim F. He went on to manage Brazil. But didn't have as much success in the second role. You should still have seen the light, and joined your tormentors. AltyOwl 08-04-2010, 14:02 Not to be picky, but the first game was in 1962. Nahhhhh, the Blades were a tight group, most of which still go. The same cannot be said for the Wednesday fans, due to the lack of success the numbers have dwindled away and you bump into lads who were die hard fans back in the day now they all have 'other commitments' like carrying the missus' shopping round Meadowhall on a Saturday afternoon!! Thats life mate, im sure theres plenty from both sides who have grown up and moved on in life to a point where football is not the be all and end all on a saturday and the money saved over the year is great family holiday paid for, i can respect that, people make hard choices and i dont condemn anyone for choosing meadowhall shopping over football. Mostly lads with decent jobs and a bit of spare cash though, they're not scrimping and saving. I don't begrudge anyones choice not to go but in my opinion you shouldn't give it the big en if you chose not to go. I like many have a family, but i still go to the home matches, i'm not as set in my ways, if something comes up like a wedding or other commitment when i'm expected to attend i'll miss the match (something i would never have done 10yrs ago!!) but these who roll out the excuses about 'other commitments' do my head in, they've got enough money to sit in the boozer watching the results come in while the Wednesday match is going on 5 miles down the road. This happens at all clubs. United's crowds rose dramatically when you were promoted and have dropped again and are going down still. Some fans only want to will only pay to see good football. Others just go no matter what. |
