I purchased a freeview box. If I run this directly from the ariel, into the box, then into televsison, no problems. But, if I run it thru either my video recorder or DVD player the picture becomes a nasty colour of red, although the images are still distinquishable, and I loose all volume.

Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, is in curable?

Sounds to me like either a dodgy SCART cable, or SCART socket on one of the devices.

Try wiring it with only the aerial cables and that should tell you whether it's the scart lead.

How old is the video? You may find that both devices are trying to communicate with the telly on the same frequency

One tip i was taught with probs like this is to turn the scart lead round, its the same on both ends and sometimes gets stuck working in one direction. So take the end thats in your tv out and put the other end in etc its amazing the difference it can make immediately. Its best for curing picture without sound or sound without picture! :D
hope that helps

When you run what through your video and DVD? The SCART or co-ax?

Are you sure you're a) inserting the SCART plugs fully home and b) using the correct sockets\leads\channels required as SCART doesn't 'just work'.
