i am waiting to go in hosp at v short notice, it could be late this week, it could be next week...i dont know yet

had my dog Arthur, for 14 years, best mate, but they wont let me take him with me...

hes smart, so clever, more like a person than a dog, hes a sheltie, old and ugly...but loyal. wont leave your side...but not in a clingy way, just the way he is

i need to find a home for just a few days, a week at the most...he doesnt like other dogs, as he protects to the death (when he was a tiny puppy i was attached by a big dog and he defended me....if the other is no threat hes ok, but he wont back down...shows his bad scar from a huge loose rottie a few months ago)

hes house trained, hates thiunder and lighting....he loves to swim in park ponds and he knows every mcdondalds drive in in sheff, if he sees them as your going in, he climbs into the front and will literally go through the window, climb through the hatch and pick up the bag of burgers...if you dont belive me, i have fotos 6 years ago him doing it...and if there slow he barks and tells them to hurry up!!

he has a bad heart, he as hit by a car 3 years ago, and while under a anesthetic to have his front teeth out at the pdsa he had a heart attack....the spent ages trying to revive him, and they did.....he has a pet passport (so ok for rabies etc) as i hated leaving him behind when i went on holiday, so i got a passport for him, and hes been all over europe with me....he loves it. but if with his heart, that cant be helped...if hes gonna go, i want him to go out doing what he does best....

hes ok with cats....hes fine with kids, but like all dogs i wouldnt leave alone.

hes fussy on food, i will supply it, but he loves cheese on toast, scrambled egg, and what you eat.....

you can ask him to fetch you something, he gets my cigs or meds...

he doesnt do games, unless its hunt the malteser or ball that you hide, he wont fetch sticks.....

hes totally gay, so never been snipped...but he did once try and hump the cat....

i have a million fotos of him, i worry about him, and he worries about me, but i dont think they will let me take him...i wont go into hosp if i cant get a good home for a few days for him, as i put him before me...

oh, if you have a bath, he will watch you like a hawk, and if you dont move after 5 in he will bite...cos when he was about 6 month he fell in the bath with water and was litteraly downed, and i had to give him the kiss of life for ages...remember like it as yesterday...and now he watches me when i have a bath..yes loves water in parks or lakes.

he smells....hes ugly, but hes so smart and loyal (and i had DSH for years, my fave dog) but he is litterally my best friend....

I dont care if your 19 or 90....just like dogs and can cope, my grandad did as he spent a lot of time there after my nan died and he kept him company...i will be worrying while im away, and i cant cope if im worrying and i shouldnt be....i need to know he will be looked after for a few days...he would soon settle, and eat ok...

This is my best friend, we go back through thick and thin for 14 years, hes never let me down....and i cant go into hosp unless i know he will be ok....i just cant

He speaks german, i taught him that....he barks if he wants something, he will tell you things etc ok, you wont undestand...but i do..but you would soon pick up what hes saying.

he can only be fed small meals, he pukes a big meal back up, but eats it again...always has. so i feed him little and often.

he howls to certain tv shows and music...got videos of it....he keeps a better tune than me....but that doesnt say much

if anyone wants to see him first no probs.....i want to see you too. hes been by my side since the mid 90's and i care for him more than i care for myself.

the people i know who could take him at such short notice who i trust are not here at the mo....

thankyou

this is him in 05 at mcdonalds if you dont belive me

i was hoping to be ok by then, got plans to take Arthur camping again around germany..mid june.
for the pet passport, you must 48/24 hours before the ferry see a vet, get wormed etc, and a health check, but last time in berlin, they checked him, and said his heart was bad....so refused him a stamp in his passport to come home, the 800 mile car trip could kill him, so i said ok..i stay too, i wasnt leaving him....

i said he had in that month, done 3000 miles, all over germany, poland etc, and had the time of his life...new smells, new foods..etc etc. and if he was gonna drop dead, that would be a cool way to go...on a holiday of a life rather than left behind...so the vet said ok and stamped it....heres some fotos of that trip back home

http://www.julianhales.co.uk/journey_home_Aug_07.htm

hes fine with other dogs, as long as he knows they are not going to attack me...then hes totally fine.

i really need to get away in the next few days, im hoping i can last until wed...as that day would be fine...hes more of a human than a dog.

Hope it all works out for Arthur and yours.
He's sure one lucky boy - being so loved and travelled so well.
Hopefully someone can find space for him for such a short time.

I've just realised from your photos that I've met you Julian! I filled your house up with lots (and lots) of very heavy computer manuals once.

I'd love to offer to look after Arthur for you, but I've got a dog that's scared of other dogs myself now, and I've already got an Arthur (although mine's a 17 year old cat) so that would confuse things too.

You obviously need your eyes testing, mate. :hihi:

You can see from those photos of him where, "He looks sad but he was really happy....but a little damp and smelly" that he's absolutely gorgeous.

Arthur had a settled night after a bit of being unsure in the day.

Fungus doesn't understand why Arthur doesn't want to play but soon got the idea.

Jules if you're reading this, he's fine so no need to worry :)

well he answers to the name, hes been called it that long.....they say a dog takes after his owner though.

Just got a home for the 15 turtles, and 2 Igs that were left from the 100 or so animals we had taken in...they go sunday, so then its the end of 14 years of rescuing, education, advice, rehoming and caring....just back to me and Arthur...like the good old days.....

That will reduce your air of je ne sais quois you know ;)

No, totally need to get out of it, for weeks, i havent even been able to offer advice, when i have seen people need it on forums who have asked me, and i have managed to get the last animal a good home....Wasnt a easy decision, but i think for best...for them and me.

Got the dog, hes staying with me...i know what for sure, where ever we end up....i feel like i have let the animals down, and a failure

ah, you mustn't feel like that. If you've done it for 14 years, think of all those you've helped! You haven't let anyone down. Sometimes we all have to make difficult decisions. I've never known anyone talk about their dog like you do, he's one lucky lad! Hope you're feelin better.

Named him after my Granddad, who was my best friend and brought me up...and they say a dog is a mans best friend

He's not lucky, its me whos lucky to have HIM.....

How can you think of your efforts as a failure?

I help with rescues when I can and whilst I know that I can't help them all, I know damned well that I've made a difference to the ones I was able to help and I know that they all have happy loving homes.

It's not possible to make people suddenly grow a sense of compassion and a conscience, but short of that you've done rescuing to the best of your ability- you can't do more than that.

How about you forgive yourself for not being able to do an impossible job and look forwards with hope that you may at some point be able to make a difference in the future instead?

Jules, I don't think what you've done for animals over the years could EVER be described as a failure.

You and the dog clearly think the world of each other :) He's a lovely lad!

Jules you have done 14 years hard service, you deserve some me time.

You are a credit to animal rescuers everywhere, you should be proud you did your bit, not sad you had to give up.

Arthur was a pleasure to have around, you are both lucky to have each other
