Tipex 13-05-2009, 21:35 Def lepard Human league Heaven 17 mr me 13-05-2009, 21:41 Def lepard Human league Heaven 17human league more than the other two for originality id say. Dan_Ashcroft 13-05-2009, 21:44 Pulp followed by Human League for me. Lots of honourable mentions though: Cabs, Heaven 17, ABC, Comsat Angels, Artery, World of Twist, Seafruit, Longpigs, Hoggboy, Fat Truckers and Long Blondes. Lady Star 13-05-2009, 22:01 Got to be Pulp - Richard Hawley's band is good though - do backing people count as a band???? Lady Star 13-05-2009, 22:02 Pulp followed by Human League for me. Lots of honourable mentions though: Cabs, Heaven 17, ABC, Comsat Angels, Artery, World of Twist, Seafruit, Longpigs, Hoggboy, Fat Truckers and Long Blondes. Long Blondes were ok, but not great... I liked them on vinyl, but live they were useless... Unrecordings 13-05-2009, 22:05 cabaret voltaire - then hula in my opinion, but human league & longpigs always come up as influences in my line of work Dan_Ashcroft 13-05-2009, 22:10 Long Blondes were ok, but not great... I liked them on vinyl, but live they were useless... I really liked them - they had that Pulp wit and intelligence about them, as well as that glam chic. Re. their live performances, to start with I'd definitely agree. But they really found their feet/learnt their trade by the time they got signed to Rough Trade and were pretty decent from about 2006 onwards. Dan_Ashcroft 13-05-2009, 22:12 Got to be Pulp - Richard Hawley's band is good though - do backing people count as a band???? Nah - because then you need to start thinking about Jarvis and Joe Cocker too - a big can of worms. Hawley was in the Longpigs of course (and Pulp sort of), so gets counted in there. Lady Star 13-05-2009, 22:33 Nah - because then you need to start thinking about Jarvis and Joe Cocker too - a big can of worms. Hawley was in the Longpigs of course (and Pulp sort of), so gets counted in there. Didn't do his best work with either though - I remember seeing Longpigs at Rock City for 50p in the 90's - they were ok, but very like loads of other indie hangers on... Hawley is better doing his own thing... Was Joe Cocker original? His stuff was pretty standard in his day??? superblade1! 13-05-2009, 22:43 Def leppard! e3sa934 13-05-2009, 22:44 i'm so hollow get my vote garrence 13-05-2009, 22:55 Minnie Moosika (http://www.minniemoosika.co.uk/) are foot stompingly good and, unlike the others, are still in Sheffield! MR BENN 13-05-2009, 23:24 Def Leppard without a doubt:thumbsup: micky12 14-05-2009, 03:04 Heaven 17   NEKRO138 14-05-2009, 08:29 Currently, 65daysofstatic are. Agent Gypo 14-05-2009, 09:04 Cabaret Voltaire, Cabaret Voltaire, and Cabaret Voltaire. Though I must confess I have a soft spot for Hiem these days. splodgeyAl 14-05-2009, 11:19 Mojo and the Beatniks, Butterbrain, King Kapish, Spiral Navigators. Probly more, but they fell out my head right now sheff bantam 14-05-2009, 11:32 human league Pauline BHG 14-05-2009, 11:39 Human League & Def Leppard :D I love Sheffield ! BasilRathbon 14-05-2009, 11:51 I'm getting bored of waiting on this thread for someone to mention the Arctic Monkeys so I can smugly point out that the OP said "Best meaning originality" and thus they're disqualified. ohmyword 14-05-2009, 12:12 I'd say: Plastic Pulp Texas Pete The Silent Age Repo Men Sea Fruit Maxxy 14-05-2009, 12:18 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kings Have Long Arms. They may not be as well known as Arctic Monkeys but they've done a single with Phil Oakey and are well worth seeing live. RedRocker 16-05-2009, 15:12 I'm Sorry but Def Leppard without a doubt!! Regardless of what they play they are the most successful band from Sheffield! As for the Arctic Monkeys!!! Don't even get me started!! LOL flowers1991 19-05-2009, 19:10 Got to be arctic monkeys !!! sexybeast 19-05-2009, 19:44 Human League. EdnaKrabappe 19-05-2009, 20:48 Heaven 17 - still love listening to songs and as i went to go on the rooftop last year, that won brownie points too. Of course, Alex Turner is best band member. :D Ivor&Mel 19-05-2009, 21:11 Strange question... the legendary Frank White Band, of course. Tsk... jonno77 20-05-2009, 11:34 reverend and the makers - loved seeing them at leadmill. Was off my face mind! Classic Rock 20-05-2009, 11:42 Def Leppard - have had the most longevity, sold the most albums and are by far the most famous worldwide. Agent Gypo 20-05-2009, 15:16 Record sales and fame do not necessarily go hand in hand with talent and creativity. Bassman62 20-05-2009, 15:29 Record sales and fame do not necessarily go hand in hand with talent and creativity.Neither does being a studio/techno band where it is down to the engineers rather than talent. Jo Cocker and the Grease band were arguably the best live act to come out of Sheffield; their Woodstock performance will stand up against any of todays studio enhanced bands. Jo's 'Mad Dogs And Englishmen Tour' was the most successful tour ever in its day. Classic Rock 20-05-2009, 17:18 If there was no talent or creativity then record sales wouldn't be achieved to the levels that Def Leppard have achieved worldwide. The public aren't likely to buy something without any talent that is dull. NEKRO138 21-05-2009, 08:50 The public aren't likely to buy something without any talent that is dull. Yes they are. Agent Gypo 21-05-2009, 08:58 If there was no talent or creativity then record sales wouldn't be achieved to the levels that Def Leppard have achieved worldwide. U2 have managed to do ok for themselves... The public aren't likely to buy something without any talent that is dull. Then how on earth do you attribute the success of Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Oasis, Kaiser Cheifs, and any number of completely vaccuous artists that I simply don't have the time or space to list here? Neither does being a studio/techno band where it is down to the engineers rather than talent. This post deserves an award purely for the staggering level of ignorance. For every talented electronic musican there are a thousand more completely devoid of it, exactly the same as 'traditional' musicians. Bassman62 21-05-2009, 11:35 Neither does being a studio/techno band where it is down to the engineers rather than talent. This post deserves an award purely for the staggering level of ignorance. For every talented electronic musican there are a thousand more completely devoid of it, exactly the same as 'traditional' musicians. If you had read what I actualy wrote you would see I said engineer not talented electronic musician as your reply implies. As others have already said far too many of todays stars are totaly reliant on studio engineers. In the studio an old saying "You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear" goes right out of the window, in the studio 'you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear'; I've seen it done. splodgeyAl 21-05-2009, 11:47 Yes they are. And do all the time. Anyway, the question is "Who is Sheffields best band?" so stop it with your Pulp etc, and get down the boozers and see some bands who ARE currently playing. Some of my current faves: Dr Robeatnik - acoustic guitar funky loops and beats Nazdrove House Band - totally daft but brilliant night out Tim Robbins (or maybe Tom - was a while ago I last saw him) - quality solo blues and gospel Dialog - blue grass classics, modern covers and their own tunes Martin Goldsack (could be playing under one of many names) - one of my favourite song writers currently ohmyword 21-05-2009, 12:28 Martin Goldsack (could be playing under one of many names) - one of my favourite song writers currently I believe he is playing at the Grapes on Saturday 30th May with the newly reformed REPEAT AFTER ME. I'm well looking forward to this gig. Mr. Goldsack will also be playing Mentholman's @ West Street Live on Tuesday 16th June at the monthly Oh My Word! Showcase. This also feaures The Na Zdrove House Band. Izzie Voodoo and Oh My Word! Tonight I will be witnessing more great local music courtesy of Ian Britt and North of Watford at the Washington. I will enjoy it. So should you people! Randy 21-05-2009, 12:47 Ohmyword are great. They're so good that sometimes there are more people in the audience than there are on stage. ohmyword 21-05-2009, 12:59 Ohmyword are great. They're so good that sometimes there are more people in the audience than there are on stage. :hihi: For some reason!!! (I reckon it's cos they're a 2 piece) Rocklegend 22-05-2009, 19:53 Surprised no one mentioned ABC. samesame monkey 24-05-2009, 11:50 The Limes are great flamingjimmy 24-05-2009, 17:14 I'd say Pulp without a doubt. Not that I particularly like them it's just that the competition is horrendous. We're a musical city for sure, shame it's not good music.:hihi: And remember all you angry people, musical opinion is entirely subjective! Cazablue 26-05-2009, 09:50 Def Lepard without a shadow of doubt :thumbsup: redwhine 05-06-2009, 08:45 "Who is Sheffields best band?" "(The) Who is London's best band!" Fixed!:hihi: Anyhow... I used to like McCloskey's Apocalypse. stopambergo 08-06-2009, 22:17 Got to be Reverend and the Makers for me. They are fantastic live - can't wait for the new single "Silence is Talking" due out in July - followed by new album. julado 09-06-2009, 00:01 I see Firegarden hasn't even got a mention.....who, I hear you say???? EXACTLY says I :hihi: MR BENN 09-06-2009, 02:30 Surprised no one mentioned ABC. i did - i was a teenager in the 80`s and ABC,human league ,thompson twins were all favourites of mine MR BENN 09-06-2009, 02:31 Def Lepard without a shadow of doubt :thumbsup: yep -couldnt agree more  ive seen them many times live Longy67 10-06-2009, 23:35 Past - Human League. Present - Reverend and the Makers. Also a good band live - Unforgiven, they play New Barrack Tavern a lot, go along just to hear Phil on guitar, awesome! splodgeyAl 11-06-2009, 00:03 I see people are still ignoring the tense of the question - recommend some CURRENT bands peeps!
