I recently aquired the Taplin Chippy in Hillsborough. It is officially on Hawthorn Road but the shop fronts onto Taplin Road.
There is 2 photographs on the wall of Hawthorn resteraunt which I am presuming is the original shop prior to a shop front extension.
I understand that the shop has been a fish and chip shop for about 100 years although I have been unable to confirm this.
Does anyone know anything about the establishment I have purchased. I would love to know.

Hi Craig - it has certainly been a fish and chip shop for a very long time. You might be able to establish roughly when it opened by looking in directories at the Local Studies Library (Surrey Street). I have the 1925 Kelly's Directory, and at 2 Hawthorn Road there is "Bernard Crookes, fried fish dealer" as well as "Mrs Ruth Crookes, midwife". From the 1940s until maybe the 1970s the shop was run by Gordon Booth - nice chap, walked with a limp - and it always had a good reputation for quality. People leaving the Kinema on Proctor Place would provide a brisk trade in the evenings. Gordon died aged 64 in 1982. His fishcakes were delicious - he used to mix a bit of parsley with the fish..:)

Last time I was there - a couple of months ago - the portions were massive. I do hope you are going to continue in the same way

I remember looking at those photographs as I sat and ate my chips. They are fine examples of a bygone era....the photos, not the chips :hihi:

I wish you well in your new venture :D

The 1901 Kellys is on line and for 2 Hawthorn Road the entry is Chas Doe, Bootmaker.

Taplin used to be my local chippy, and it was definitely worth a visit. Good luck in your new venture

Hi fluffystuff - I can't get the link to work. Is it just me?. ..Charles Doe lived with his widowed mother in 1901 - here is the census entry: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/CharlesDoe.jpg

By 1911 he had moved to 190 Middlewood Road, so perhaps No 2 Hawthorn Road became a fish & chip shop in the interim period.

Maybe Craig can put the two photos on photobucket.com or another hosting site (I live a long way from Hillsborough nowadays and I'd love to see them!)

I have amended the link to the main site. The link to that directory does not work, so you will need to do a search to find it though

Thanks for these replies guys. I will certainly get the pics on line somehow for you as soon as I get a minute to do it.

The portion size, I regret will not be as big for the chips. I know he supplied a lot howeer, I am already getting queues at times and his previous portion size would only supply 3 bags of chips from each pan. I do promise you quality though :D

Thats great. Well, thats the room that I have adopted to sleep in. Sadly, the place is in a very poor state of repair on the upper 2 floors. However, I am slowly cracking on with it as and when I can.

The smell up here isn't too bad. The extraction and filter units downstairs seen to be doing their job and the 'chimneys' are round the back and go pretty high in the air.

I found out some interesting information that half of the next doors garden actually belongs to the shop. The landlord (i lease the building) is going to look into it and see if it is re-claimable which would be fantastic (fortunaly they rent next door so if it is I think we would wait until they leave - they are a lovely couple).

I hope you have some good memories of living here and I hope I get some too :D

What happened to the friendly Turkish couple that had the place before?

My understanding is that he is going back to Turkey for a while (on his own) to visit his family who he has not seen for a few years. Then, I believe he is looking for a job when he gets back.

Visited a fair few times now, you were talking about having another little seating area just around the side. Have to admit it's nice sitting outside enjoying a bag of chips and having a chat with the owner.

Your doing really well so far mate, and although were moving to southey soon, when were in hillsbrough your the finest chipery in hillsbrough.

Keep up the good work

can I ask why you serve your chips in polystyrene boxes with lids? I was surprised they were not served in paper

we are now the proud owners of this fine chip shop and i can tell u that the portion size will be just as good if not better we have owned it for a couple of month now due to the previous owner having other work comitments so it was unable for him to keep working there if people would come and give us a try and see what they think about the place would realy be good

this used to be my parents chippy in 1972 to 73, my bedroom was in the attic. my family also owned the house joined on and the first two on hawthorne road,my dad still says he wish he had hung onto them till now, we would have been minted. we used to have a little dog that would never go up the attic stairs, he just used to growl at the bottom. guy who we sold it to said his two big alsations used to do the same. always gave me the creeps as a kid.

Anyone know what's going off with this chippy? It's been closed for a while now.

It seemed to never be as good after the Turkish guy left, the last lot were nice but the quality of the food wasn't the same.
