BOHEMIAN 18-06-2009, 14:39 Hi people I would like to ask you all for some feed back on an issue that has arose at the bohemian. As you all know we are a pescetarian cafe/restaurant but have had many requests to put a meat option on the menu. We are contemplating putting free range, organic chicken on the menu as this is a more ethical source of meat. I would be very grateful for your views on this matter as it is you the customer for whom this eating establishment caters for. All comments will be taken into account then a decision will be made and i will inform you all of our decision on the meat matter. Thank you for your help.
slimsid2000 18-06-2009, 14:57 I would enjoy a nice fillet steak.
I'd never go to a veggie-only place, with a token effort of one meat dish you might see me.
Dark Moomin 18-06-2009, 14:59 I am a big meat eater, but also will happily eat veggie and fish dishes. Could you maybe vary your ethically sourced meat dish... if you get regulars they mught get bored with chicken! Local free range anything is about as ethical as it gets.
I've never been to the Bohemian but seen and heard good things.
Choosing to sell a meat dish may not encourage me to visit personally, but not selling meat at all would definitely make me stay away.
I don't know if that helps at all.

Yes- im the same as him to be honest.
slimsid2000 18-06-2009, 15:03 Forget ethics and concentrate on the taste.
Agent Orange 18-06-2009, 15:11 A varied meat selection would get me through the door. Vegetarian and a limited meat option would not make me want to visit.
Merry_Legs 18-06-2009, 15:14 Althought I'm not veggie anymore, I really like the Veggie stuff here and the fact there is a decent choice helps too. I suppose it'd be OK as long as it's not detrimental to the choice of veggie options!
LitleMermaid 18-06-2009, 15:17 Bohemian, I am veggie, and I love your place, but although I don't eat meat, if it's about getting more customers through the door then I would rather you serve one ethically sourced meat dish then you have to close and I'll never get to come there again!
I don't see why so many people have a problem with eating veggie only food though-almost everywhere in the city, with the exception of the Blue Moon and Bohemian, I have little or no choice, and always have to eat the same dish time after time again because most places only have, to coin a phrase used earlier in this thread one "token" veggie dish. Which is usually a jacket potato with beans. Or a veggie burger. Which are nice, but I don't want to eat them every time I go out! It annoys me! That's why I love coming to eat at your place. Do you think serving meat would would get more customers through the door?
BOHEMIAN 18-06-2009, 15:37 Although we never intended to go down the meat route we now have no choice! its ether diversify or suffer the same fate as many well intended veggi places!
Dark Moomin 19-06-2009, 06:59 Forget ethics and concentrate on the taste.
Fortunately for you then Sid, ethical meat does tend to taste waaaaay better!
BOHEMIAN 19-06-2009, 10:37 could all those people whom view this topic please give us some feed back as this will be a big change and we would like as many views on this subject as possible so as we don't make the wrong decision thank you all for your input. By the way we are open on Sundays now 10-4 and have a Sunday menu which has a veggie special as well as a fish special. the usual menu is also on so plenty to choose from have a relaxing afternoon with us see u there.
BOHEMIAN 19-06-2009, 10:39 Yey! Glad you are open Sundays again x
there's a Sunday special menu see you there
Without knowing the ins and outs of your business, veggies are a minority - catering only for them, on the face of it, immediately limits your customers. If that's working for you, great. If times are tough and you're looking to increase business then perhaps going towards a mainly veggie/some meat might work. As long as it's good food at a good price you could be on to a winner. Build it and they will come.
That's just my feedback as a meat-eater who has no business experience of running a restaurant though!
brianthedog 19-06-2009, 13:21 Hello. I love meat, but eat very little of it as I'm quite health concious, and because I'm fussy about the quality of meat (which means I end up buying the expensive stuff). I'd happily eat somewhere which is completely veggie. However, having a meat option would encourage me to visit - as long as the focus was on quality meat. Just out of interest Bohemian, are you a veggie? I used to go out with a veggie chef - and she was absolutely rubbish at cooking a steak, although she was a good cook on the whole!
Tough one if you've always focused on veggie food, but if by not broadening your potential customer base you risk closure I'd say you've got to sell meat. If the original decision to sell only veggie food was on ethical grounds, there's no reason why this needs to be compromised by selling meat - just ensure it's quality, local and traceable. Whirlow would be a good place to start looking.
Just out of interest, do you do take-out? I'm starving and heading out shortly...!
brianthedog 19-06-2009, 13:24 Fortunately for you then Sid, ethical meat does tend to taste waaaaay better!
Definitely - worth paying that little bit extra. Free range chicken thighs are far superior to cheap chicken breasts :gag: - and cheaper too, with lower fat and higher protein. Win win - cheaper, better meat - and a happy chuck.

It seems that the vegetarian market is slowing down but you need to diversify to stay ahead especially in these times, and we have had a large request for a meat option that's why we are considering putting it on. We'll be a vegetarian restaurant with a meat option that may be the best way ahead but we do value our customers opinion's henceforth the reason for this topic. Thank you for you're input though and if you down these sides pop in you might like it.

All he chef's here eat meat we do take-out and we do believe in ethical standards. You won't be disappointed with the food though it's different, flavorsome and simple honest seasonal food. We change the menu every month so that keeps it all interesting and that is what we'd do with the meat option.
EdnaKrabappe 20-06-2009, 10:38 I really hope you don't close Bohemian as i love your food.
A little criticism - Last time i Came a few weeks ago, i think your menu was not quite as interesting as you have been in the past and i understand completely that if you are not getting the footfall through the door why the menu had to simplify.
BUT don't become just another cafe/restaurant because then you lose your unique selling point and I drive across town just to come to you whereas anywhere else i eat because i'm in the area.
I think you do cater for meat eaters through the fish choices that you serve and many people love well cooked veggie food once they've tried it.
A lot of people still haven't heard of you so perhaps a bit of promotion is needed at some of the summer events such as pride today?
Keep the faith. . . perhaps offer the one choice if you need to but don't lose your identity.
Have a look at Hitchcocks in Hull as a very good marketing idea and something i think you'd be brilliant at. This could be an ace way of getting large groups in.

Charlotte_ 20-06-2009, 18:05 Hi Bohemian,
I'm a vegan and I've been to your restaurant a couple of times. I understand if my opinion doesn't count for much because of how infrequently I've visited but I promise I'd have been a lot more if I lived closer!
For me, the fact that you already sell fish means that selling a bit of chicken wouldn't really make a huge amount of difference. In fact, I'm surprised that you're questioning providing chicken when you're already comfortable with putting fish on your menu - what exactly is your distinction between the two? A small amount of meat on the menu wouldn't stop me from visiting you (primarily because vegetarian/vegan options are so slim in Sheffield), but it definitely makes me less keen.
I'd be much more likely to go to a restaurant if it didn't sell meat/fish (or, even more so, any animal products at all) because I like giving my money to people with shared ethics. Plus, it's good not to have to watch the people around you eating meat for a change. The smell of meat/fish cooking is also pretty off-putting.
I understand your economic position so it's pretty much down to what you personally feel comfortable with ethically. I just wish it was easier to own a vegetarian restaurant without going bankrupt. Good luck, I'll come back again soon I expect.
Keep meat off the menu if at all possible - you're our fave eaterie in Sheffield, as vegans we know that at least 50% of the menu will be suitable for us and it always tastes fab, and there is always something for us for dessert.
Educating the meat eater is key - why not give Bohemian a whirl, try something veggie for once, it saves lives, and not just your own. For all the carnivores who are now thinking "I can't live without some meat", well to paraphrase Barack "Yes you can!"
I think you have to decide what your pitch is.
Are you a veggie restaurant? If so, you can't (imo) offer fish.
If, however, you're happy to portray yourselved as 'ethically-sourced/organiic' (including fish, beef, pork and chicken) then I think you should say that.
If you're still intending to offer vegetarian food, then you should be able to say, 'all 'vegetarian food' is prepared and cooked completely separate to non-vegetarian food'.
Just my thoughts....
BOHEMIAN 21-06-2009, 13:00 hi all once again!! i think it really important that we do not cause any confusion! our menu is predominantly vegetarian vegan and fish! but all we want to do is put a meat option on. if only the vegans and vegetarians of Sheffield could have supported us a bit more we would not have to go down this route.
We have lost out on three years of trade to keep to our original concept! this is no longer possible in this financial climate, WE NEED BUMS ON SEATS!
hope this makes it absolutely clear that we are not changing our establishment to a meat restaurant. but only one that offers a meat option.
love and thanks
bohemian
greenfingerz 21-06-2009, 22:06 Hi all my name is Paul I am one of the Chefs at Bohemian, I would just like to introduce myself, I have 10yrs experience within the catering industry and have worked all over the UK. I have only recently joined the Team at the Bohemian and although it is only a small restuarant it has so much to offer I hope you all enjoy my food if you don't please let me no it is so important for you to tell us otherwise how are we to fix the problems which may occur.
As for adding a Meat option to the menu I believe it has to be done, I may be bias as a meat eater but due to a sharp decline in people visiting the Bohemian ( through no fault of there own ) meat is one of the only options left. Unfortunately vegans and vegetarians are a minority and unless there is a regular custom base it becomes un economical to run a restaurant. One thing that myself and Geoff ( the Head Chef ) will agree to is that we will not reduce the present vegan and vegetarian menu we may even increase the selection rather than reduce we will be a vegan/vegetarian restaurant with a meat option, The Meat will be all Free Range.
thats it from me, I hope to see some of you soon.
Paul

Blimey. That is the most patronising thing I've ever read on SF, and that's saying something!
Imagine eating something that didn't contain meat? Incredible - I really should try that sometime.
jojomarmite 22-06-2009, 10:53 this might be off topic but i was very dissapointed when i visited the bohemian a few weeks ago.
Before this visit, i had been many times before it had the makeover and new menu, and i loved the food and atmosphere.
When i tasted the new menu, i was soooo dissapointed, i couldn't even eat my meal. I ordered the vegetarian biryani, and i assumed it would come with a sauce, as there was no sauce option on the menu. Yes, i should have asked, but i didn't. it arrived, with some pitta and mint and yoghut dip.
It looked like a huge plate of plain brown rice, peas, potatoes and carrots. And it was. It tasted soo bland, and i was really upset. I didn't want to say anything, as my boyfriend had taken me there as a treat, so i didn't want to upset him or the atmosphere.
He tried it and was shocked at how bad it tasted. It had no seasoning, and was the most expensive plate of rice and peas i had ever tasted/bought! It was also stuck together, and definately tasted mircowaved. I think the price was £8.95.
Anyway, i hate complaining and i certainly don't want to stop people going, but i won't be visiting the restaurant again, as i think the food is over priced, and tasteless.
Its just such a shame, as the old bohemian was lovely, with the food being full of flavour and worth every penny. It seems the food has gotten worse, and even more expensive.
brianthedog 22-06-2009, 10:55 Biryanis are only served with sauce in the UK - incorrectly!

Hi I am sorry about your experiance obviously I wasn't working at the time of your meal but I hope you can change your mind about not visiting the bohemian it doesn't sound like Geoff to serve bland food especially when both owners are from Kashmir so curries are there cultural dish.
If you would like to try us again just ask for Paul and I'm sure we could sort something out for you.
Sorry again for any upset caused.
Kind Regards Paul

I'm not getting at you personally JoJomarmite - but this is something that really bugs me. You didn't like you meal and thought it was poor qualioty rather than just something you didn't like. So rather than tell the staff quietly and politely and let the Chef know of your experience to allow them to try to fix it so that you have a better experience. You instead come on here and tell everyone what a terrible time you had and that you'll never go back, despite previous good experiences.
If you had complained and they had treated you badly then that would be a different matter.
As I say this isn't a rant directly aimed you, because you see it so many times. We just can't seem to get the way of complaining right over here to make sure we get good service. Its either all ranting and raving, or nothing at all!
Sorry, rant over!
NEKRO138 22-06-2009, 12:04 Don't get a lot of the posts on here saying how they wouldn't go because it caters only for veggies. I'm not a veggie but I can enjoy a vegetarian meal. As long as the food's good why would you stay away just because of the lack of meat?

Agreed. I'm not sure that by adding a meat dish you broaden your appeal at all. The veggie stuff you sell at present is suitable for (nearly) everybody (vegans notwithstanding) and there's a bit of fish for them that want too.
I worry that adding meat may put off some veggie/vegans, while not attracting any more meat eaters. You're always gonna get some dyed in the wool meat eaters saying "I'd never go somewhere that doesn't serve meat", but most people in that frame of mind won't suddenly come to a veggie restaurant just because there's now a single chicken dish on the menu.
The majority of level headed meat eaters (myself included) see no need to eat meat every meal (or every day, or even every week!).

I do normally mention it to the staff if something is wrong, but like i said, my boyfriend had taken me there for a treat and to cheer me up (something bad happened, and i don't want to discuss it) so i didn't have the energy to complain, and i didn't want to upset my boyfriend or ruin the evening. Thats why i have mentioned it on here, as i missed my chance. It is important for them to know, and it made sense to say it now! Like i said, i don't want to put people off, but feedback, good or bad, is important. If i can help them improve one dish, it will prevent future compaints i guess!! As for going back, maybe i will, as a treat, and try something else, but i do fiind the menu a bit too expensive.

Hey thank you, its ok!! I just thought i would mention it. I should have mentioned it at the time, but i couldn't for personal reasons. I just think it is important in order to help u guys, maybe it was a one off, and its not always like that, but the rice was clumpy and very bland. i guess i was just shocked because i had visited the restauant before the new menu and makeover had been introduced, and the food was great and worth every penny.

Like i said, i don't want to put people off, but feedback, good or bad, is important. If i can help them improve one dish, it will prevent future compaints i guess!! As for going back, maybe i will, as a treat, and try something else, but i do fiind the menu a bit too expensive.
As I say, it wasn't aimed directly at you jojo, as you had said that you had reasons for not making a complaint at that time. I just feel sorry for all the restaurants struggling against people slating them on here and in other similar places when they weren't even given the option of rectifying the problem at the time.
Does The Bohemian have a website?
hello bohemian
my opinion is not to put a meat dish on the menu. I personally think it will dilute your menu. it is tempting to cater (excuse the pun) for everyones tastes but I think because your menus theme is good quality, homemade, relaxed vegetarian putting a meat menu would make your menu seem confused to me. I am a vegetarian I have been to your restaurant, (sorry maybe not enough to pay your bills every month) and my opinion is stick to the vegetarian/fish menu.
I am sure you are aware of them, but my ultimate fave veggie restaurant is greens in didsbury, award winning fodder with no faces est. 18 years different business model to you guys in lots of ways i am sure but a busy veggie restaurant.
I send you lots of luck, well done with what you have achieved so far. I agree with the fact a business should be constantly changing so however you change I hope it is the right choice for you and your punters
keep your chin up the recession has to end eventually

As yet we hav'nt put meat on the menu we are contemplating to do this, we would like to see what the customers think about this idea, yes the recession has affected us but i think if by putting one meat option on the menu and ensuring the survival of the bohemian is it not better, than to see the bohemian be another victim of this recession. Ideally we would like to stay as we are but we don't get enough support from the vegetarian community this place has been opened primarily to cater for the vegetarian community but times are very tough and that might be the only avenue we have left to go down. If we do put a meat option on the vegan/vegetarian options will not be effected you will still get the same options on that side i hope you all can understand the predicament we are in and any decision will not be taken lightly.
love and thanks the bohemian

Oh dear, now I know I am really difficult to feed, because I thought the menu looked nice and tried to decide which meal I would have, but I have realised that for every single item on your menu I have some reason why I couldn't have it :(
So what do you have suitable for a dairy free, wheat free, mushroom and seafood allergic person who doesn't like curry, chilli or ginger? Now I know why I usually stick with steak when I am eating out.
snuggles 17-07-2009, 08:21 Bloomin eck, you are difficult to cook for. I've been twice in two weeks and both times have been fantastic. Your taste would suit the Chocolate Cake which is amazing, particularly as it has no dairy products in it. I don't know how they did it, yum, yum.

Hello Bohemian,
Can I make a suggestion? I was in a few weeks ago on a sunday mid-morning (stunning fresh orange juice, by the way) and was suprised that there wasn't anything especially "brunchy" on the menu, I was sort of expecting maybe scrambled eggs, bagels, vege full english...something along those lines. I thought that the normal daytime menu wasn't quite right for that time of day, and although I'll be in again on an evening, I reckon you've a hoard of customers out there if you do something more aimed to the mid-morning market on a weekend.
Fantastic food, and lovely atmosphere, but just wondered if you could do something pre-lunch-ish? I can only imagine that the best orange juice in town would make a great breakfast bucks fizz :) (hmm, do they sell champagne in that lidl over the road?)

hi! are you ok with us posting our monthly menu??
went down with mrs last week for the second time, im not a veggie, although my partner is working on that, and enjoyed the meal and experience. the waitress was lovely, as was the food. had a 3 course meal for 2, plus coffees for 30 quid. keep it up.
hi! are you ok with us posting our monthly menu??
You already have a thread promoting your restaurant, you don't need to post a new thread every month, do you? And you certainly don't need to be posting it 4 times in different areas of the forum.
I havent been to your place yet but I am intending on coming but my OH will be less reluctant if there was at least one meat dish, I do tend to go the veggie route lots because I dont eat red meat so looking forward to visiting you, hope that helps
Masquerade 01-08-2009, 15:18 does the restaurant take card payments?
menu looks good, though it's not a proper 'foodie menu' if there's no meat on it (!)
So no Sunday brunch yet then?

spit_the_dog 12-08-2009, 19:34 personally, think it would be unfortunate to add meat option, there are many places to eat meat in sheffield. for a vegetarian it is refreshing to have somewhere to go that is veg/fish only

Kthebean 13-08-2009, 12:48 I meant to post on this thread. We went for a meal at the Bohemian a couple of weeks ago and had amazing salad starters, and two fish specials, one which was prawn with noodles and one spaghetti with mixed seafood.
It was, simply delicious, and I was very very impressed. The atmosphere was great and the waitress was very friendly.
We will certainly be coming back again!
Can I just mention to anyone thinking of going that the Bohemian dont take cards so take some cash with you! we had to toddle up the road to the cash point which wasnt a problem for us but if you had mobility problems might be.

it's not that i'm against not having meat on the menu, though if you want to attract a wider customer based, you can consider from time to time, adding a 'meat dish' onto the menu...
for that reason, i, as a meat eater, am put off coming to your restaurant, though your 'veggie/fish menu' does look nice, but not quite enough:hihi:

davidwhitley 29-08-2009, 16:33 Re: the meat dish thing.
I've not yet visited Bohemian (I've only just discovered it exists) and I do confess to being something of a carnivore. But I also like to try something new, so I will drop by.
However, I do think you either need to decide whether you're making a point, catering for a niche, running a business or some kind of combination of the three. You're either a vegetarian restaurant and proud - in which case you shouldn't be serving fish and you should be marketing strongly about being Sheffield's only (?) vege restaurant - or you're a restaurant that caters well for vegetarians.
There's nothing wrong with either. The first gives you a major point of difference, and allows you to become well-known for what you do. The second means you go toe to toe with every other joint in town on price and quality. If you think you're good enough, then you should have no problem.
But I think you're perhaps a little in the half way camp.

thanks for your contribution! it is a difficult one and we have been going through series of changes, we first opened as a vegi and vegan at first but than had to put fish on our menu with in the first six months of opening.
i think we are some where in between a vegi and fish place that caters well for vegans.
i do take on your points! :)

Sounds great, my only problem with the menu is the 'grey sole' Thai curry- I've never heard of grey sole - dover, lemon, no problem but grey? Not the most appealing name for a dish is it...? I think Thai fish curry would sell better maybe.

plz google the name! theres plenty of stuff about grey soul! its not grey in colour but in skin, hence the name, but the meat is a white pink colour.

BOHEMIAN 04-12-2009, 20:33 Hi all!! some ppl were asking if they had to eat from the Christmas menu during the day in December,
no worries we have a day time menu and an evening Christmas menu!!:o:hihi::cool:
see you around!!
EdnaKrabappe 20-12-2009, 21:15 Sorry I'm a bit late posting this but had a very busy week.
Went to the Bohemian for one of my Christmas do's this week.
It was wonderful
We were so well looked after but not overbearing either, just the right touch.
I had French onion soup, followed by the Macadamia Nut Roast with all the trimmings and then I had Black forest gateaux for afters.
Really lovely meal and all my other friends enjoyed theirs immensely too. Thank you very much x
Please support this independent local business! We've got so few independent restaurants and this place is great!
Would it be possible for you to mark on your menus which meals are suitable/could be made suitable for Vegans? I've asked this by direct message before but didn't get any help.
Many thanks!

What is it and where is it?
haddockman 05-01-2010, 22:54 We were going to come tonight, but were put off by the weather, hope to get to eat there later in the week!
RozeePozee 06-01-2010, 18:51 Heard very good things about this place but went before Christmas and found it a bit of a disappointment - maybe it was overhyped?
haddockman 07-01-2010, 09:03 Went last night and all the dishes we had were absolutely delicious!
You'll be seeing us more often!
LitleMermaid 07-01-2010, 17:22 Yeah haddock and I went for something to eat last night-I had the polenta with creamed mushrooms, Tofu laksa and an orange juice. I was stuffed but really really, REALLY wanted some of the cheesecake I could see on display, so I asked if I could take some out and they were lovely and let me-I even got a lovely foil handbag made especially for my cheesecake, which totally impressed me and I was gutted when I slipped on the ice on the way to the car and broke the handle. :( I'm please to say the cheesecake survived though! Well at least until the second I got home  The staff were fab as usual!
Can't wait for my next visit, a million thumbs up!

hi
www.thebohemiancafe.co.uk
We went last night, mmmmm i love Bohemian! The enchiladas were gorgeous, the calamari was amazing, the main courses we had were great and the apple crumble, mmmm lovely lovely!
Coupled with the great staff, lovely atmosphere, fantastic value, this place is becoming a Sheffield institution and an absolute gem on Chesterfield Road!
If you haven't been yet, go!
lauramaria 17-01-2010, 16:50 improving quality and value for money would be my suggestions. Had a really awful, mushy risotto there that was more expensive than in many top notch restaurants and we have never been back

Did you give them any feedback at the time? It sounds like you had a bad time there which is a shame because it's always been really good when I've gone and I've introduced loads of people to the Bohemian and they've all gone back.

LitleMermaid 10-02-2010, 09:30 Decided to go out for tea last night and just fancied the Bohemian. As ever the food was fabulous, and the service brill! I had falafel followed by tofu kebabs with cous cous which was delicious. I did donate my cougette to haddock but that's not a slight on how it was cooked-just can't bring myself to put the stuff in my mouth! Haddock had nachos and veggie paella, I don't know what they did to the broccoli but it was gorgeous! Well done, again! No doubt be back around my birthday in a couple of weeks!

EdnaKrabappe 10-02-2010, 18:23 You've decided to go with the meat on your menu then?:(
I hope, really hope, that this is something that you decide doesn't work,i.e. most people continue to eat the veg choices, as your veggieness is the USP that you have and what makes me drive across town to you. A lot of people still don't know about you and that's a shame as you are brilliant but this ruined the Curlew Cafe in Otley which went from being an amazing place to just another cafe.

Dont worry!:) We only having an extra meat option, as you may remember we already served fish right from the start. The Bohemian will always be a predominantly veggie and vegan place. So you will always be at the fore front of our mind.

Hannah1989 10-04-2010, 18:59 In my opinion a veggie cafe should stay solely veggie - but then it's definitely better to branch out a little with free range meat if it means the cafe will stay open. i agree with LittleMermaid in that vegetarians have little choice in most cafes/restaurants so it's really good to go to a place where you don't have to scan the menu for the little "(v)" which is only next to 2 or 3 dishes - but if serving meat means the cafe can stay open, go for it. having 2 seperate menus would be really really good though, as it would mean definite veggies wouldn't have to read about non-potential meals - i know it sounds a bit picky, but in my opinion there's no point having meat dishes on the same menu as veggie stuff in a specifically veggie cafe if the majority of customers can't eat them!
I think when you go to the Bohemian, the meat and fish dishes are on a separate blackboard (they don't have individual menus) so that you can avoid looking at them if you don't want to.
What are the opening times now, Bohemian? Are you open every day? :)

Are some vegetarians that militant that they don't even want to look at meat related words written down?
Don't go to Oldham or Twickenham, whatever you do :D

A huge disappointment!!
My girlfriend and I fancied a nice meal on Friday night and we picked the Bohemian Cafe and I can honestly say it was the worst meal I've ever had.
In fact within one hour of leaving the establishment I was wretching in the street and my girlfriend had terrible stomach pains. God only knows how my she managed to keep her meal down; a stir fry - a grey congealed broth of over cooked noodles, handfuls of salt and an oxo cube. She was so hungry that she managed to eat a third of the bowl but then had to complain. The waiter, although friendly, came back and told us that both he and the chef had tasted her meal and they thought the salt levels were acceptable. He reduced the bill by £2. I had tried the stir fry and it was foul.
I've noticed from previous postings that the onus is placed on the customer to complain however the waiter was clearly implying that we were wrong. I had an overpriced pathetic attempt at a lasagne.
My advice: don't eat there until they employ a new chef.
gledwards 17-06-2010, 15:39 I have been here twice now and both times the food was delicious and the staff lovely. There should be more places like this around.:)

neeeeeeeeeek 23-06-2010, 08:36 But get rid of the staff if you do... they are so slooooooowwwwww at everything.
Seving people does seem a massive effort for them. Perhaps it's the lack of protein!
:)
Have been a fan of the Bohemian since it opened, but for the first time, was sadly disappointed by the food there recently. Starters were good (Greek salad, falafel), although the falafel were a bit dry. The mains were the big let-down, in particular the pizza. The horrible base, lack of flavoursome tomato topping, onions, green peppers or herbs (we had asked for everything veggie to be added), and the use of bland cheese, made this like a tasteless Iceland cheapo frozen pizza :( Really not what we had expected at all. The other main dish (mushroomy pasta) was ok, but the only flavour was garlic.
Maybe the chef has been replaced in the last few months, but don't feel this is now the restaurant we used to know and love. We've definitely been put off  Perhaps by doing meat, fish, veggie AND vegan dishes, they can't give every menu item the time and attention like they used to, and have to resort to cardboardy pre-packaged pizza bases etc?

LitleMermaid 08-07-2010, 11:31 I think feargal was talking about the Blue Moon staff :)
sorry to hear that you didn't have a nice meal when you came down to the bohemian. We value your custom and would really like for you to let the staff know at the time that your not happy with your meal.
Will try to say something at the time, if it happens again, although complaining isn't always easy if it's something like not liking the mass-produced tasteless pizza base or bland toppings, compared to food being cold or under-cooked. I tried to indicate disappointment by withholding any praise for the main meals instead! It was closing time too, so felt it best just to leave.
I think feargal was talking about the Blue Moon staff :)
 I was! I love the food in there, although it's sometimes a bit too "canteen" - just dolloped onto a plate. And the service is shockingly slow.
Not been to Bohemian yet. I was going to try it last month, but the June menu didn't look very inspiring for me I'm afraid. It looked too much like the stuff I cook at home. Will try again though - honest!

BOHEMIAN 11-09-2010, 13:19 Sounds good. What's in the veggie Jambalaya (and please don't say 'veggies' ;) )
hi! our jambalaya has a selection of about 5-6 veg. depending on what we pick up from the market in the morning determines what goes in.......but usually its peppers, onions, tomato, baby corn, courgette etc. if we got it in we would put it in... but if you don't like a specific veg then we wont put it in as its all made to order.
hope that answerers the question?

May have to postpone until Friday now, will ring and book Friday lunchtime!
Had a lovely meal here at the weekend. Hadn't been for a while and really enjoyed it. The desserts used to be a bit of a disappointment but there's more choice now and I had vanilla cheese cake which was delicious.
I was a bit worried that they'd started serving meat, not because I have any objections to people eating meat, but though they might lose focus on having a good choice of interesting vegetarian dishes, but that's certainly not happened. I had a lovely mushroom stroganoff with lots of different types of mushrooms in it. The meal came to just over £15 a head for 3 courses and coffee, which I think is pretty good for freshly cooked good quality food. I ate at a fantastic vegetarian restaurant in Manchester called Green's recently and wished it was in Sheffield as we're lacking in good vegetarian eating out options here, but after going to the Bohemian this time ,thought it was pretty much as good as Green's and cheaper.
haddockman 18-10-2010, 16:21 Jealous garlic, I missed seeing stroganoff until I'd ordered! I had the Paella which had around 10 different vegetables in it and was delicious though :)
Agree, we rarely have dessert in there, usually have a sharer of dips, then a starter and main.

Hi this menu started 1st dec hope to see u down here...........:D
LitleMermaid 02-12-2010, 20:20 You will see us! And we saw you, yesterday. We were on a flight on our way home from Munich, and I was reading the in flight magazine. You were featured on the Doncaster airport section, under things to do in Sheffield :D
My 'Christmas' meal from the December menu was absolutely gorgeous
Any news on what's on for January?
Fellow forummers (particularly fussy eaters like me!), you really will have to search hard to find nicer food and better service than here.
Diamond Sea 07-01-2011, 14:19 hi all once again!! i think it really important that we do not cause any confusion! our menu is predominantly vegetarian vegan and fish! but all we want to do is put a meat option on. if only the vegans and vegetarians of Sheffield could have supported us a bit more we would not have to go down this route.
We have lost out on three years of trade to keep to our original concept! this is no longer possible in this financial climate, WE NEED BUMS ON SEATS!
hope this makes it absolutely clear that we are not changing our establishment to a meat restaurant. but only one that offers a meat option.
love and thanks
bohemian
That's really nice to hear that your original concept is important to you. I think it's all too often that a business will breech its' principles for economic gain - yes obviously a successful business certainly requires financial prosperity, but in my mind, it's equally important to keep in mind ethics, which you seem to be doing.
Speaking as a vegetarian, I don't think i'd be too ****** off to see meat on a vegetarian menu; honestly i'd rather not, but then again respecting the meat eating population is just as crucial as respecting the non-meat eating people.
Don't be too disheartened by all the mardy vegetarians, because I think your ideas of introducing meat options is not only brave, it's a bit 'out the box' and really quite democratic ;)
LitleMermaid 04-10-2011, 14:52 I miss the Bohemian, re-reading this thread has made me sad :(
