View Full Version : F.A G.B Football Team(2012) tosh13 06-07-2005, 14:51 The F.A. have announced they would like to have a Great Britain football team,I think this would be a great idea with all the talent GB has surely we would do well in this tournament. What are your thoughts on this subject. 21steve 06-07-2005, 15:22 no no no. apparently if we were to do this fifa would expect us to use a GB team for euro and world cups as well. not acceptable to any true english, scot, welsh or (northern) irish fan JonMMUK 06-07-2005, 16:08 Not true. Apparently Sepp Blatter has gone on record to say that fielding a united British football team at the 2012 Olympics "would not result in the establishment of a British team for other major competitions, including the World Cup and European Championships." I think it could be a good idea. With the combined forces of all four home nations, we could actually win something! nez75 06-07-2005, 19:43 There's only one problem. Can anyone actually see any players from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland getting into the squad? tosh13 07-07-2005, 08:21 They do with the GB Rugby team nez75 07-07-2005, 18:47 We're on about football though! Hopman 08-07-2005, 09:43 I can see a problem here. The Olympics will be starting at the end of July and that's going to clash with pre-season training. Forcing our top players to compete in the Olympics is going to subject them to hardly any summer break. In effect the season 2011-2012 isn't going to have an end, so you'd be talking about season 2011-2013. They couldn't just start from scratch in their first game, there would be a need for pre-Olympic friendlies. Who would provide the opposition for these games? Now that there are so many international football competitions, is there a need for football to be included in the Olympics? scoobydotcom 08-07-2005, 12:29 being in the same year as the euro championships, the gb olympic team (if made) will be useless as all the good players wont play as to play in euro's as simple as that alcoandy 08-07-2005, 12:54 Just a point - why do we enter as Great Britain anyway? Why not as what we are - seperate nations!! JonMMUK 10-07-2005, 21:20 Because in every other sport we compete as GB, not the four home nations. I don't think the IOC would allow England, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland to compete separately, or else every other country would start wanting to. You'd end up with national teams from Bavaria and Alaska and Sardinia and Texas and Patagonia and Inner Mongolia. Would never happen. I know we do it in the Commonwealth Games, but I think that's different. ReginaldD 14-07-2005, 15:04 The scottish fa have said they will not allow it, it would be a good idea, but they would have to make it a rule that so many players from ech country have to be in the squad or else the gb would mostly be full of english players, with very few from the other 3 nations. Agent Gypo 14-07-2005, 16:43 Who knows what players will be around in 2012, but if it's anything like now, team GB would be the England team with maybe a Scot or a Welshman on the bench at best. Longcol 14-07-2005, 23:28 Dead right; any GB team from the last 10 years would probaly have been 10 English players and Ryan Giggs. Isn't the Olympic footy mainly made up of under 21's? Isn't the Olympic footy mainly made up of under 21's? Giggsy is passed it, I'd go for Joe Cole or Stewart Downing now. JonMMUK 14-07-2005, 23:58 Originally posted by Longcol Isn't the Olympic footy mainly made up of under 21's? [/B] Almost. I think (and please correct me if I'm wrong) but they have a 22-man squad for the games; 18 of them have to be 23 or under, they are allowed 4 "seniors". Something like that anyway. |
