My laptop is playing up and it's doing my head in!
About every 15 minutes it just freezes and I can't do anything with it for about half a minute. If i click anywhere, the screen goes pale and i get the not responding message in the blue bar. It sorts itself out without losing work but it is very frustrating as you can imagine, especially when listening to music or watching stuff online.
I've downloaded avast and done a scan but that doesn't seem to have helped it and i've also done a system restore but i'm still getting the sam thing happening.
Please help me before i throw it out the window!!!!

I got my daughter an old laptop from work we were gonna toss out. It's a 1.3ghtz P3 with 256mb memory. I put on windows XP and with it being 256mb it tends to stop working for a while too. The task manager reports it uses 400mb++ of memory, so i guess it's dumping to the HDD a lot causing system hangs.
Long shot but could be the same issue.
Other than that look at your task manager and go to processes and see if anything is hogging more CPU/Memory than it should and close a few Apps in there.

cheers for the suggestions but it has only started doing this in the last couple of days or so.
Could be the hdd going down.
go into safe mode f8 on boot and see if it does it in there
if it doesnt its software,if it does its likely to be hardware.

try taking the back off where the motherboard ias and seeing if the fan and heatsink is covered with dust and give it a clean, also if you google Registry Mechanic think you get a free trial not sure thuugh but i got full version off a disk i got with a computer magazine and it optimizes the computer and goes through files to see what problems are might work not sure but worth ago also download yahoo toolbar as you get an anti-spy scanner on that, it scans for spyware on the computer..this might also help. good luck
