View Full Version : Women dont suit short hair

Why do some women in particular older ones have there hair cut really short. I personally dont think its very feminin and if they have put on quite alot of weight as well as having short hair they can actually look quite manly. They can have their cut however they like but surely long hair always looks better.

Personally I would never have my hair cut short but each to their own and all that. My friend has always had hers short because she says its easy to style. I think it suits some women. :)

Short hair is obviously easier to look after and maintain and you can go out in a force ten gale and not end up looking as though you've been dragged through a hedge backwards.
Certain styles suit certain builds which is why people shouldn't march into their hairdressers and demand they have the exact same hair style as their favorite celeb it may all go horribly wrong.

It suits a very small percentage of women, mainly women who have an extremely feminine face, otherwise they just look like butch lesbians.

I beg to differ, some women look absolutely stunning with short hair and most definitely not manly.

I personally am of the opinion that women always look better with long hair, I have never come across an exception. Always better down as well, not a big fan of ponytails. But that's just me I guess.

Possibly because we don't really care whether other people find the style unfeminine or not? The same as we don't go around dressed in pink, frilly frocks just to conform to somebody else's out-dated notions of how women should look?

And let me ask you a question - why do some men, in particular the older ones who are going bald, insist on sporting a pony tail? I personally don't think it's very masculine and, if they have put on quite a lot of weight as well as having long hair, they can actually look quite ludicrous. They can have their hair cut however they like, but surely short hair always looks better.

What nonsense, plenty of women look fantastic with short hair Mia Farrow, Maggie from Northern Exposure, Winona Ryder & my wife for example all look at their best with short hair. Some faces just really suit a 'pixie cut'.

As for why they do it, aside from the fact that some women obviously like the look of it, short hair is generally easier to live with.

she didnt, well not in my opinion. She had her hair long at the start . Sometimes long hair on a particulary good looking woman can hide the face or not do much for it.

i think short hair looks good on women,ok it may not suit some people...but it is their preference i guess.most women have it cut short for the time factor..eg. they havent got time to manage long hair especially if they work and have a family to look after.

I can immediately think of someone like Dame Judi Dench, as an example of someone who has a very short, gamine cropped hairstyle, and on whom it does look amazing.

The shaved head look that Sinéad O'Connor had, was quite startling at first, but as a really beautiful woman, she could carry it off.

I, myself think a shorter, neater hairstyle (but not too cropped) looks better on me, than a long hairdo. My hair is finer than baby-fine, and if I allow it to grow, it just looks like "rat-tails" as there is no substance to it. A shorter style gives it a bit more body.

I think feminine is as feminine does, myself. Judi Dench as an example, is a beautiful, feminine lady, and she has short hair...

I also don't necessarily think long hair suits every woman. there are some glamorous ladies with longer hair, but you have to take in a number of factors such as the person's face shape, their hair colour and texture, their build, and their lifestyle.

A chubby face needs a certain style to flatter it.

Abundant curls on a brunette can look fabulous a-la Sophia Loren, or Rita Hayworth/ Jayne Russell, but on a blonde like, me can look like Shirley flipping Temple. :hihi:

Again, huge hair can swamp someone who like me isn't very tall.

I'd rather have a short, easy-to-deal with, quick-drying hairstyle that I can tuck away under my scarf, than faff about with styling and all that gubbins.

Styling products irritate my scalp and give me dermatitis, so I can't use mousse or hairspray so a long, elaborate style is out of the question.

If I used mousse, I'd be scratching my head like I'd got chats!! :o I'm happy to comb my hair out of my face and tie a scarf around my head. Far quicker, far simpler, much less expensive, and best of all, no dermatitis! :D

Men and women think differently. Its my opinion and dont so see why it should upset anyone im not personally attacking anyone. I say having very short hair for a female seems unfeminin thats what i think and because i think that does not make it wrong. If you are in that particular group i am describing and are getting angry than that is your problem. We all fit into a certain group be it what we do for a living, how we look, our personal habits etc etc. We are all different we can say what we like whatever we think. What is right or wrong is a matter of opinion. I think far too many people get upset by what other people think (even though they have own opinions) yet dont express them or get unnecessarily angry by what some people might say. They just need to relax and accept that not everyone agress with them.

Others just like the wind on their necks I guess.

I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion etc, but found it rather generalised you stating that women with short hair look unfeminine, especially if chubby. I think that starting a thread singularly excluding and making judgement on any woman who has or has had short hair is unkind and calls to be reconsidered. What would have wrong with starting a thread 'what length hair do you prefer?' or a poll even, and if your opinion transpired to be the dominant one then fair do's.

Why should i be so passive and pander to every single group there maybe. I have enough confidence in what i say. I dont see why i should word what i say to sound incredibly kind to all. Why not just say what you think about the subject? Instead of thinking that me and others think of nothing better than to attack and try to make feel bad anything or anyone we may have an opinion about.

On the subject it doesn't make a difference to me there are beautiful women long haired, short haired, bald, rainbow coloured etc etc etc, unless she needs to have long hair for a particular reason then why should she be subject to such a judging panel. I'd love to see how successful your threads would be if you were to make sweeping statements about those of different races, job types, backgrounds etc without expecting a similar backlash. short, cropped hair can look very good on skinnier women. it also suits many attractive black women.

i don't think that it's an easy look though for all women. especially if you have quite a large body and a small head or you are quite stocky. i really don't suit short hair.

PT, thats exactly why I have quite short hair. When it goes any longer than my shoulders it just looks like a mess no matter what I do with it.

Its now the down to the nape of my neck at the back, and a bit longer and shaped around my face at the front (yes I know, sounds hideous, but description skills aren't up to much at this time in the morning). I'd never suit hair extentions or anything like that although I do miss being able to curl my hair.

Someone said to me the other day "Why don't you have some hair extensions done, to give some length and bulk to your hair?"

I said "No way. My hair is too fine. If I had extensions, you'd be able to see the seals etc."

- not to mention the faff of caring for them:- the styling, conditioning, etc. the time and the cost of having them done in the first place, and the time/cost factors of maintaining them.

*aarrrgghh!* Just the thought of it gives me palpitations! :o

Give me low-maintenance, quick-to-deal-with, short hair, any day! :)

There is no single style that suits all women. We are all different.

Personally I find that the convenience of short hair far outweighs any aesthetic considerations, although like PT I have fine hair. Short hair is easier! I shower each morning, then shake my head. Job's OXO for the day.

Even Mia Farrow?

It doesn't help that most of the pictures of her with long hair that I can currently find on the interweb are of her as a middle aged/older woman, but I managed to find a couple of older ones, and yes, I definitely think she looked better with long hair.

I also think women always look better with their hair down and not in any kind of ponytail, so perhaps for me it's something about the the way hair frames the face.

Well there's no accounting for taste I suppose. I find some women look better with their hair away form the face and with others even if they could potentially look better with long hair they haven't got suitable hair.

Everyone should have their hair cut (men) or styled (women) to suit what they are happy with without having to worry about what other people think. I have mine cut short enough so that a force 10 gale wont move it, its quick to wash and dry, my wife needs to know well in advance if we are going out or to somewhere special, then the time frame becomes hours and she is never satisfied. Glad that I am a bloke.

Why do some women in particular older ones have there hair cut really short. I personally dont think its very feminin and if they have put on quite alot of weight as well as having short hair they can actually look quite manly. They can have their cut however they like but surely long hair always looks better.

long hair on an older woman is just wrong. It is awful when you see a woman who is all grey and her hair is down her back

That's not very nice. Hair is a comfort thing to a lot of women. If they have grown up with long hair they may want to keep it that way not necessarily because of the look, but because it's part of who they are.

It's a woman's attitude that matters, not how long her hair is.

Well I suppose they could, at 65, dye their hair aubern or some other un natural colour if they wanted. We are used to seeing women in a false light anyway, bras, girdles, wigs and makeup so it is difficult to appreciate women as they really are. you are clouded by the general false image women give so don't be upset when some "come out" of the boudoir and show their true colours.

Pink doesn't look good no matter what she does with her hair!

She's one of those girls who only other women seem to think are attractive.

And it's that kind of attitude that makes you a No.1 catch, young man ;)

I've often wondered why some men have a bald patch, particularly older men.

Do they think women find it attractive?

As Im someone with a bit of a receding hairline problem, I really really hate it and would love a full head of hair again. Erm I doubt if baldness could be attractive lol.

I think that is the point. People's hair changes with age. It is very easy to be young and have long hair, but as it thins and loses its strength it is much more difficult for most people to keep in check. As a teenager I was able to grow my hair down to my waist. I couldn't sustain that now particularly as I swim most days.

Anthony Edwards from ER, (Dr Mark Greene) was balding, and I thought he was lovely. Le sigh!

Now, saying that, SOME balding men don't look so attractive, especially when they are tryimg to hide it!!
