Number 1 is a nice shot. The daetail is picked out well and the depth of field is OK.

I like the idea behind number 2, but it just seems to lack something.

Number 3 would have been better if the water was flatter (beyond your control).

2 and 3 would both benefit from a bit of editing to to bring up the contrast and give them a bit more punch. ( I can demonstrate if you like, but I will probably get slated for it.)

These show an eye for a decent shot. Keep it up.

IMO the first one is an improvement.
I think the B&W one is really good. It adds a lot of atmosphere to the shot.

Must admit that, even after astraman's suggestions, I still don't get #2 and #3.

I do like #1. I think it could be improved slightly by cropping so that there is more space above and in front of the butterfly than below and behind - it gives space for the beastie to move into and also moves it back to a 1/3 point instead of being smack in the middle.

The other thing I would say is really a suggestion for taking a better shot rather than improving this one - the surrounding foliage is a little bit distracting. I guess you could try to blur it a little in photoshop but it would be MUCH better if you could shoot it against a background that is far enough away to throw it out of focus - and ideally be a bit darker too. The butterfly perched on a single isolated stalk would be the ideal but you might have got close to that here if you'd shot from a little to your right. It looks like there is a gap in the foliage behind from that direction.

Nice shot tho.

I think that's an improvement. And somehow the background greenery doesn't seem so distracting either - now that there's less of it. What do you think bebop?

No1 is a nicely focussed macro shot which has benefited from imp's advice. There is a however, and that is the distracting light coloured foilage in the top right hand corner. If this can be toned down, then you've got an 8/10 shot. Personally, I like No2 although it will always fail regardless of colour because of one fatal element which is the visible diagonal lines. Photographic judges hate them with a vengance as they are "too severe". No3 is probably my favourite, however there appears to be detail missing below the right hand squiggle. If this detail can be recovered from the original file and with further software manipulation, then this could possibly be a 10/10 shot.
