View Full Version : Pubs in town that are a disgrace
bladegirl1 09-05-2009, 15:25 just been in sheffield town centre this afternoon with my 10- year old not very often i go in town has i prefer meadowhall, but i have to say what a disgrace the pubs are in the town centre.from the market the pub at the bottom then past by the co-op the one down the side road then up to the bankers draft . I have to say the bankers draft was the worst men outside drunk has early as 1.30 never had a wash dressed dirty picking tab ends up off the floor outside the place. I ask myself what standard does any of these pubs use? The thing is you only have to look what goes in and out of the market to see what sort of people use these pubs, they all congregrate round there. I like a nice decent pub one where there is good music good standard of people etc. What do other people think on the standard of these pubs?
slimsid2000 09-05-2009, 15:37 Never go there to a pub. They are a disgrace and full of chavs and ner do wells.
netheredge 09-05-2009, 15:57 Has to agree with you Bladesgirl ..yeah its scary and makes my tummy turn just to think of drink in the daytime.
Ive been in the Bankers a few times and it it not the friendliest of environments. Edging towards hostile a lot of the time.
Funnily enough, during the world championships, I bumped into a snooker player a few weeks ago who was having a break from one of his matches.. Im sure he had no idea what kind of clientelle frequent it and just wanted somewhere to go for a drink.
It's the location problem that lets the pubs down on one hand, but the industry is in such a mess that maybe they lower their standards to accomodate all types of people.
Horses for courses - if you want to take your kid out with you while you have a pint, fair do's, I do it sometimes. Just choose a pub that suits. I wouldn't take my little one to the Bankers Draft - I'd take her somewhere like the Red Lion. As for the atmosphere, I quite like a pint in the Bankers' now and then, it's different and I've never felt intimidated.
The Banker`s stank of **** last time I went in. The Huntsman is better if u want a Wetherspoon`s cheap meal and a drink imo.
The bankers is a dire pub for reasons that have already been stated.
There are not that many good pubs in town but there are a few, mainly up division Street.
Grandad.Malky 09-05-2009, 18:05 . I have to say the bankers draft was the worst men outside drunk has early as 1.30 never had a wash dressed dirty picking tab ends up off the floor outside the place.
1.30 :hihi: you don’t get out much do you, they will have been well oiled by then, they were probably knocking on the door for their breakfast.
Last time I had a meal in the Banker's Draft, the service was shocking! That and I asked for a chocolate ice cream and they brought plain! :loopy: I also asked for no peas with my Scampi, and the plate came FULL of peas! But they do that at other Pubs cos for some bizarre reason they think the plate looks empty if they only put 6 pieces of Scampi and a few chips on it! :loopy:
sierraman 09-05-2009, 18:17 Wife was scratching for a week after we mistakenly, one Sunday morning, went for coffee in the Bankers Draft at 9.45am. There were people drinking Magners cider at that time of day. Now I know why Magners is referred to as 'Tramp Juice' in the licensed trade, by the look of the people drinking in the Bankers Draft. What a dump!

there's-grammatically, there are-six billion and more people in the world and so an almost infintie number of choices of places to and things to do. some people frown upon a parent taking kids to pub-age and gender not withstanding- and some find it ok(me included). if you want the kind of service you expect in harrods go to harrods, if you want something akin to bankers go to bankers. don't expect bankers in harrods or the other way round. people need to calm the hell down. the city is laid out the way it is for a reason. all horses may have their courses being the underlying idea. crystal does nothing for me because there are stuck-up-their-own-rear-too-broke-but-showing people in there(my opinion) and bankers has people that don't care who you are or what you earn. so i go there regularly. we can have a tailor made city for everyone. next time you're out, if you can't-or choose not to-experience anything outside of what you're comfortable with go to the places you're used to. or open your mind and not get too stuck on what ice cream you got and try to LIVE. make it an anecdote or something in later years instead of spoiling yours and your child's day by being annoyed by what service or cream you get. life is bigger than that. and the market provides more and better food and trade than any of these money grabbing supermarkets or shops-majority-you get in meadowall. recognise.
jah live.

Really you like the atmosphere in the bankers? guess its each to their own, first time I can remember anyone comenting on the atmosphere in their being possitive though.
I have been in there for several reasons, location, cheap beer and simply cause I was intrested to see what it was like but I have to say I never have and probably never would go in for the atmosphere.

I like the atmosphere in there too. Never had any trouble and most people in there are happy to chat. I often bump into people I know. Bumped into a friend I'd not seen in 3 years the other day.

Crystal Bar-what a rip off joint that is-I went in a few months back now and it was £3.50 for a pint of San Miguel. Think I would rather stick with a weatherspoons pub and the more realistic prices they charge
joshtetley 10-05-2009, 12:25 Its everyone to their own,no one forces anyone to go anywhere do they?
millers11 10-05-2009, 17:31 Try the Devonshire Cat - very friendly, fab choice of beers, great food, plenty of room and the staff are amazing!! So knowledgeable about what they are selling and if you fancy one of the real ales and you arent sure of the taste they let you sample it free. Great great service by such warm friendly and polite staff
goldenfleece 10-05-2009, 18:35 You think some of the City Centre pubs are bad???
have you ever been out in Mansfield????? Now those pubs ARE tatty...
chris101 11-05-2009, 09:36 Dont think you should be taking a 10 year old into a pub
whitworth77 11-05-2009, 11:50 If you are looking for somewhere to dring around that end of town what do you expect??
bladegirl1 11-05-2009, 16:45 i wasn't taking a ten year old in a pub nothing was said about taking a 10 ytear old in a pub i was saying the pubs around that area are a disgrace, aroung high street used to be fairly decent but the market area is shocking . I can understand why the pubs and the shops in town are losign custom the area is so run down, people now either prefer crystal peaks or meadowhall.

I agree that the whole area is a total dump and an eyesore and has been allowed to become like that whilst the Council waste millions on other projects. The pubs in the main therefore reflect the rest of the area, because the area in question is starting to attract the very worst of Sheffield society (although some may argue it always has done).
nothing wrong with bankers good drinks and cheap you dont get ripped off and the landlord and landlady great people who dont deserve all this crap
bladegirl1 12-05-2009, 17:48 thanks for your support goldenfleece glad someone on here can see whats really happening in the world. most people walk around wioth their eyes shur nowadays.

Its a Managed House, no such thing as a Landlord or landlady in these places....it will have a set of duty managers who probably flit between other Weatherspoons outlets in shifts....
ryannina 14-05-2009, 10:14 Devonshire Cat is an amazing pub, brilliant beers and food is always lovely whenever i go in.

weve been to the bankers a few times and i will not go for food anymore the last time was the final straw the service was slow and ignorant and rude! the foood was appualing i had pasta with chicken in sauce and it had been sitting under the lights too long so the sauce had all dried up and the chicken had scorch marks on from being burnt under the lights! then the garlic bread was rock hard! my daughters cottage pie was cold and my partners burger was no better.
so we only go to bankers for drinks now and never food!
katy1981 14-05-2009, 10:29 Dont think you should be taking a 10 year old into a pub
depends on the pub really.
i take mine to some of the weatherspoons, but only in the day and never at night and its only for some food then out again. we dont hang around and my kids dont make any noise they sit eat and leave. we dont even have alcohol when we take our kids. and its very rare.
and i always phone to make sure children are welcomed.
i would never take them to our local pubs at darnall :gag:
I think some people have missed bladegirl's original point.
She clearly wasn't talking about taking her 10-year old into one of these pubs; when referring to the Banker's she was saying how shocked and disgusted she was simply walking past it. At the end of the day we're talking about the city centre here, and I totally agree that to have to encounter such scum hanging around outside a city centre pub in the early afternoon is simply not on.
I work near the Banker's and the last time I went in there (over a year ago now) was on my lunch break with my partner and her sister. We were told if we wanted food we'd have to wait at least an hour. Why? "Well, er, we actually don't have any food in at the moment, we're still waiting for an order."
Says it all really!
english not being my first language maybe i'm missing the point here. perhaps if someone defines or gives examples of said 'scum' i'd understand the trajectory of this thread better.

'Scum' is one of the mis and over-used words in the language.
In this case it's largely being used to mean people someone doesn't like the look of; i.e. probably poor, cheaply and poorly dressed, tattoed, 'odd' looking, may well have cheap flashy jewellery and smoke and drink heavily.

i see. so by that definiton would it be right for those looked on as 'scum' to look on those who look at them as 'scum' because they don't like how they look, dress etc? funny you should bring the 'poor' thing. i saw a student throwing up on the street and damn near falling in front of a moving cab the other night, wednesday, but the cops kind of laughed, shrugged and made some comment about the next day's lectures being hard work. friday night some guy outside bedroom was doing exactly the same. he woke up in a holding cell i'm sure. confusing, but now i see it's because this guy was 'scum' and hanging around where 'scum' hangs around.

Zion, I think you have misunderstood me; it's not a word I use myself and my attempt to define it was based around the usage of it that I have seen on this thread and elsewhere on SF.
I try not to judge othere on their appearance. I tend to form my opinions of others on what they say and what they do. Calling one's fellow human beings 'scum' because they look different is a pretty poor way of carrying on.
Whats odd looking?
It's very hard to define isn't it? Anyway, ask one of the people who so freely use the word 'scum' to describe people they don't like the loook of.
scrapper 15-05-2009, 07:58 the pub is not a disgrace but the mens toilets are in bungalows and bears, they smell vile .
i agree scrapper great pub great couple who MANAGE IT cheap drinks nearly allways crowded so not much wrong i must be scum but im still working hard and dont smoke outside still if im scum who cares
Devonshire Cat is an amazing pub, brilliant beers and food is always lovely whenever i go in.
Agreed and I don't think it's that bad value
SCE ESCORTS 15-05-2009, 18:21 Have to say the Bankers Draft needs a good make over. The last time I had food in that joint the table we sat at looked liked it had being in a projectile vomiting competition! The deep stains I think come from very light wipes every few weeks LOL!

The bankers draft is a wetherspoons chain pub. As such all meals are microwaved except for burgers and steak.
It always will pull a crowd being central and cheap!
I never said that if you happen to drink in Banker's then you're 'scum'. I was specifically referring to those people who hang around outside it; and even then it is not the way they look, but rather the way they act.
I was walking past Banker's once and was physically stopped (grabbed by the arm) by a large, menacing looking bloke who said "Oi, give us a fiver." The fact that it was the middle of the day and there were lots of people around made me confident enough to say 'No' and quickly shake him off.
Spitting, littering, swearing, shouting, and abusing/harassing passers-by are the actions of what I consider 'scum' - and that this is happening in the middle of the city centre, even in the day, is a blight on Sheffield.

Havr to agree. Now wait for the all the people on here who will now point out I take EVERY opportunity to insult the Bankers Draft and many of its patrons
There is a reason for this...we frequently have to look at the ***** standing outside, most of which have been drinking cheap nasty beer all day and can hardly stand, or are intent on harassing and abusing passers by, or happily smoking weed, etc. It's the truth, and any one who says this is just 'sour grapes' or whatever because I own the pub next door, I invite you to spend a day sat outside the back of the BD and make a video...
without question 95% of any incidents that have spilt over or kicked off in the Dove and Rainbow are started by people (and I use that word loosely) who have exited or been thrown out of the BD....this is FACT!!!! It is the new Cannon!!!
Somebody please buy the place and turn in into a decent bar or a restaurant.....I dont care they are cheap, dont get me wrong, it has zero effect on MY niche market trade even if they GIVE their beer away free.......its the people who hang out in there I detest

If thats the case and I dont doubt it for a second why are the police not making sure its not allowed to happen?
Ghostrider 18-05-2009, 18:42 [/B]
If thats the case and I dont doubt it for a second why are the police not making sure its not allowed to happen? The most they ever do is to pour beer that the street drinkers have down the drain.
They also make the BD customers who have beer outside take them back in.
But they do nothing about them smoking weed etc as the "customers" can see the police coming.
Even when they caught someone dealing outside, they couldnt do anything as he had the time to pass it to him mate who wandered off..

Then they need to employ doorstaff and have CCTV.
gnikojm'i 18-05-2009, 19:37 i hate to break it to you, but ive seen/smelt some of the customers from the dove smoking weed too, also seen little bags passed around in the toilets, these things happen in a lot of pubs/bars and by people that look "normal", "balanced" and "respectable". the one that made me laugh once in the dove was when i had a group of kids (anyone under the age of 30 is a kid to me :) ) call me and my friend chavs! every band on the tshirts they had on id seen, and i reeled off albums/songs/singers, you should have seen their faces! nice bunch of kids once we got talking to them, but their first impression was judgmental, aggressive and generally not very friendly, and i made sure i told them off for it.

yeah this has happened on a very few occasions ..anyone caught dong this is barred instantly, whoever they are!! Fortunately its not a regular occurence because we are so vigilant about it and my staff are so fantastically well trained they know what to do, and how to do it! And you are right, this happens in EVERY bar, club and pub, you just have to stay alert and stamp it out pretty fast!
But the huge number of people over the last 3 years who have wondered in from the BD and who stink of weed is beyond believe............and they dont understand why they are asked to leave!!!! All we try to do is uphold the law, and unfortunately, not every institution has the same degree of vigilance.

I must be part sniffer dog :D
gnikojm'i 18-05-2009, 20:16 im sure that everyone does there best down at the dove to counter this illegal behaviour, given the size of your place compared to the B D, and how difficult it is to keep on top of it, i can only guess the problem is magnified next door.

if it sounded or frlt like i was 'jumping down someone's throat' i apologize. this was not my intention. it's just rather rich people saying all this about some places. it's wrong to be agressive or threaten people. wherever you are, however you do it. a customer in the dove saying i was lost and wanted the place next door=which i wasn't, fleece, your pinball machines kick ass and i like the feel of your beer garden, feels like i'm in a kind of private member's club. and the majority of the cusomers are all crazy;-) and too laid back to bug anyone, just the way i like them. nearest place you can get to a rasta gathering without the rastas...=is no different to some asshole in bankers trying to force me to buy some crap they stole from primark.
the underlying tone of the comments is what grates. have heard the vodka rev crowd saying the same bout some of the best places in sheffield, casbah, for one. and some people who've never been to donkeymans say the same. you go to a place once and have a bad experience it's a hundred percent ****. you go there a couple more times you might see it for what it is. and just because you don't like a place don't make it ****. because people act different to your norm is just what it is. thank you kindly. and, again, my apologies.

metalman 19-05-2009, 09:25 When it first opened the Banker's Draft was pretty good, I even took my Mum there for lunch a couple of times, but I certainly wouldn't go in there these days. If you're looking for a definition of 'gone downhill' that's got to be it.

I agree, back in 1988 when it opened it was lovely....its just in the last few years it has gone downhill so fast it has bottomed out into the worst scum hole in the City Centre in terms of its socail dreg customers. They got rid of their door staff because they cant afford them any more (Weatherspoons is in dire financial straits with a debt burden of 522 million pounds as of Jan 2009) , which made it so very much worse, and don't seem to be bothered they are full of morons and pond life.

You are of course entitled to your opinion that everyone who visits Wetherspoons pubs is lowlife scum, but your attempts to suggest they are in financial difficulties is unfortunately way off the mark.

Are the people who drink Wetherspoons' excellent range of well-kept real ales lowlife scum as well?

They owe 550 million, its not a picnic for them!!!!! Do you know what the weekly interest is on that alone????? Plus they cancelled their door staff as they could not afford them and one of the former duty managers TOLD me that himself, they work on such tight site budgets at the moment.
The real ale drinkers in W pubs are certainly not scum, and I am not suggesting that.......the persons I generally refer to are the 99 pence lager drinkers....I pop into the BD from time to time to sample the ales just to see what they have on the bar as I like to look out for unusual or rare beers in this area. Its not ALL their customers, I am discussing in various threads the majority who give it a very very bad name. I have no issues with ale drinkers, as I have yet to meet one who is in any way a 'chav' or 'low life'.......real ale attracts decent working people, all the stats show this.........its no accident that cheap lager is associated with bad people......
upthetykes 20-05-2009, 11:08 See the thread about Players Bar - a dive rather than a disgrace maybe. Also RSVP is so much less than it should be.

not ventured in here yet....always seems to have loads of huge bouncers outside which always puts me off a bit....
Phil Anthrop 20-05-2009, 11:20 I did jury service in Sheffield some two years ago. I come from Whiston and used to drive to Meadowhall and catch the tram from there to Sheffield. Sometimes I arrived in Sheffield too early and would call in the bankers draft for a coffee. Sometimes it was as early as 9-15am ...and guess what?....some people were already sat there drinking beer ! It was an eye opener to me! Most of the drinkers did look somewhat like the types who infest rather than frequent a pub!

I went in on Monday, it's a nice bar in terms of how clean it was and the general decorum. There were about 10 people in at 9.30pm and they had 3 door staff, 8 bar staff, 5 dancers and a DJ. The music was the lowest common denominator end of the dance music spectrum- not my thing but I'm sure lots of people like it.
Phil Anthrop 20-05-2009, 15:05 Weatherspoons are not in financial difficulties, never have been , never will be.
OK, you bought a house 20 years ago for £40,000 pounds. It is now worth £200,000. You have made improvements and still owe £28,000....are you in financial difficulties?

What are the dancers like? Someone told me they were cheerleaders?
labelling those who drink in the bankers is the equivalent of suggesting everyone who drinks in the dove and rainbow is a hippy freak.

yeah, a bit like cheerleaders. it's not at all like spearmint rhino.

I never labelled 'everyone', I have been talking on various threads about a hardcore of patrons they have who are dodgy...I am sure there are many nice people who drink in there too, but I only am aware of the people causing problems out the back doors, as I see this all the time......
Hippy freak? hihi: It probably does actually describe a couple of my regulars actually, but I mean this in the most affectionate way and in the 60's/70's 'hippie' context of freak. We have more punks than 'hippies' though......
