I used to work there and wondered, if anyone was willing to admit frequenting the often grubby little joint, they had any memories at all?

View Full Version : Memories of Roxy's anyone? sugarnspice 06-07-2005, 10:56 I used to work there and wondered, if anyone was willing to admit frequenting the often grubby little joint, they had any memories at all? Tommy21 06-07-2005, 11:09 I was 17 when I first went to Roxy's (I am now 22) and when I walked in they made me sign up for a membership but I was not aware they also entered me into a prize draw I ended up walking out of Roxy's with a Tele and video, which i still have today. So brilliant memory's for me. Tom sugarnspice 06-07-2005, 11:12 Wow! I have fun memories mostly actually. They used to get really ropey "soap stars" like that was going to convince anyone to come in?! Strix 06-07-2005, 11:19 When did you work there though? Rock nights were the best :D :headbang: sugarnspice 06-07-2005, 11:21 I worked Mon, Weds, Thurs, Fri & Sat 1997 - til it closed. I worked Rock nights, everyone wanted to work them because the customers were all really nice on Mondays. Strix 06-07-2005, 11:31 Ah, so it wasn't just me then :D I hated the leering, squawking and obnoxiousness that went on the rest of the time :( It sounds mad, but Rock Nights were so much more 'civilised' :hihi: sugarnspice 06-07-2005, 11:33 No that's true. The rest of the week was crazy withdrunk students throwing glass ashtrays at your head and the like. Mondays were a welcome breath of fresh air. Freebird 06-07-2005, 11:56 I Used To Be A Regular For The Monday Rock Nights. It Was A Real Change To Go In A Big,Plush Night Club When You'd Been Used To Going Rebels. I Can Remember That Colin Slade Would Only Play About 3 Thrash Tunes All Night.I Think It Was To Keep The Real Drinkers At The Bar! sugarnspice 06-07-2005, 11:57 Lol. I quite miss it now I think about it and always feel a bit sad when I go by on the bus and see it. D2J 06-07-2005, 12:05 I worked there very briefly when I was 18, didn't stay long as I couldn't stand the job.. My only memory is the job.. was never a customer :hihi: sophiec1979 06-07-2005, 18:53 wednesday student nights- that was our night. we had our own table upstairs by the little square dancefloor next to the bar. spirit and a mixer a quid- no arguments there. shag at the leadmill on a monday shag 2 on a tuesday roxys on a wednesday thursday- night off fridays loveshack at the union saturdays either crasher or poptarts sundays- die!!!! its amazing i ever got a degree at all! lol sophie x Freebird 06-07-2005, 19:23 Depends What The Degree Was In-Alcoholic Studies:thumbsup: senwar 06-07-2005, 19:33 Fantastic club - such a laugh, and had some great nights there. Was on the hitman and her (dancing on stage) in 1988, saw a few cheesy acts (London Boys especially!) and just enjoyed going. Got some great memories, and its such a waste as it is now. JohnM 06-07-2005, 20:23 I remember at a Monday rock night buying a round involving some pints of bitter and some of lager - and nobody could work out which was which - it all looked & tasted exactly the same. The rock fashions were pretty outrageous in the late 80s/early 90s - it was the height of glam rock - and laods of folk dressed up for Roxys big rock night - does any evidence exist of what people actually used to wear? I'm sure nobody would believe you now if you tried to tell them... :) AlquarUK 06-07-2005, 22:04 I used tolove it, must have been about 17 the first time! ha ha Actually it where my parents met when it first opened!! ha ha pete_jim 07-07-2005, 09:46 I've said this in another thread but they used to have the most amzing gay nights in the 80's Chekkers Disco. Ousetunes 07-07-2005, 10:39 If they ever knock that building down I bet they'll never be able to remove that carpet. Talk about it sticking to your shoes. Dump of a nightclub. sugarnspice 07-07-2005, 10:41 True. True. Saw some amazing sights working in there (and I happened to have lived quite a sheltered little life previously). nick2 07-07-2005, 11:53 Originally posted by pete_jim I've said this in another thread but they used to have the most amzing gay nights in the 80's Chekkers Disco. I went to a couple of those, they were a good night. Infact I had a good time every time I went to the Roxy, I think if you set off wanting a tacky night out you wouldn't have been dissapointed. MTheo 07-07-2005, 12:56 i went to the rock night once....... my mate said he saw a bloke dressed as a girl at the urinal. that is only memory of that night! nick2 07-07-2005, 13:54 I once saw a girl wee in a urinal, though it wasn't in the Roxy. I was quite impressed. BertieBasset 07-07-2005, 14:00 Roxy - set your standards low and be prepared to drop them....nuff said...:gag: D2J 07-07-2005, 15:45 Originally posted by BertieBasset Roxy - set your standards low and be prepared to drop them....nuff said...:gag: Have a bad experience did ya mate ;) The_Sharp 07-07-2005, 15:49 Remeber going when i was 16 (shortly before it shut) and seeing my English Teacher in there...... he looked more worried about being caught than we did! ernie 07-07-2005, 19:07 Any one been to the new coffee shop in Hillsborough "Jalucys" Freebird 07-07-2005, 20:12 I Heard They Had A Dodgy Milkman Hangin' Around There. Thursday nights late 80's/early 90's - best night of the week. Far better than posing in places like Josephine's. BertieBasset 08-07-2005, 07:44 suffice to say if you like Kingdom then Roxy's would have pressed your buttons too... :hihi: Originally posted by steelcitybab i never went to roxys :) :( dunno if that's good or bad :suspect: Ousetunes 08-07-2005, 08:22 Is that alright for yers? nick2 08-07-2005, 09:32 I remember some mates going specially to see "The Hitman And Her" being filmed in the Roxy. 40summat 10-07-2005, 21:33 I worked there early eighties, Pyjama jump night during rag week was a nightmare. We where told to "let them play" in other words behaviour that would get you thrown out any other night, was ok tonight because nobody will be offended. It was ticket only via student union, so much like a private party. the result was mayhem lots of injuries with broken glass (usually sitting on it) Unconscious vomit covered students everywhere, for the doormen and bar staff it was the longest night of your life. monty 25-07-2005, 19:12 Originally posted by sugarnspice I used to work there and wondered, if anyone was willing to admit frequenting the often grubby little joint, they had any memories at all? hi iworked at roxys many many years ago,, i worked bar 1,2 3 and anywhere kevin used to put me,,, do you remember mary on the door and mr hughes ??? mike dobson he was the big fat manager,, he died about 6yrs ago,,,do you remember any of the door staff??? and what about kevin the djs helper the dj was malcom??? comet 25-07-2005, 19:26 Originally posted by sugarnspice I used to work there and wondered, if anyone was willing to admit frequenting the often grubby little joint, they had any memories at all? Don't have too many memories apart from the hazy ones :partyhat: but i DO remember going into the flea market that used to be held in there. Now that was a crazy place to hold a glorified jumble sale if there ever was one :loopy: H.P 26-07-2005, 06:51 Originally posted by MTheo i went to the rock night once....... my mate said he saw a bloke dressed as a girl at the urinal. that is only memory of that night! I think his name was James (memorys gettin a little faded) but he was there most rock nights. I allways used to think he looked excellent, he really took some time and effort over his apperence sugarnspice 26-07-2005, 06:58 Originally posted by monty hi iworked at roxys many many years ago,, i worked bar 1,2 3 and anywhere kevin used to put me,,, do you remember mary on the door and mr hughes ??? mike dobson he was the big fat manager,, he died about 6yrs ago,,,do you remember any of the door staff??? and what about kevin the djs helper the dj was malcom??? I worked there, usually on bar 3. It stopped opening upstairs because people just stopped coming. I certainly remember mary who eventually ran the cloak room. Lightninboy 26-07-2005, 10:21 I think his name was James (memorys gettin a little faded) but he was there most rock nights. I allways used to think he looked excellent, he really took some time and effort over his apperence Yeah his name was James. Remember him from Rebs when he he was just "a little bit TOO glammy". (Gold Lame handbag etc). Really nice kid. Changed his name to Jenna? anyway, went the full hog and became a female. Like I said, great person. Remember Roxy's Rock night very fondly. Still got my Roxys Rock night card and loads of piccys for when I get old (too late!) and need reminding! WallBuilder 27-07-2005, 00:04 Roxies had to be the one place you were more or less assured of getting in to if you were slightly underage. The bouncers could be charmed with a smile and a batted eyelid [just as well I loked older than i was as that probably wouldn't of worked for me] I remember two of the staff from the early 80's, Alison one of the bar staff, long hair and glasses and Eddy a half caste chinese guy who worked on the door. I have certain memories of the place most of which I try not to remember although one or two of the rock nights were enjoyable [if that's the right word] Duffer 27-07-2005, 16:37 I never made it into Roxy's. Got hammered on my mates 16th and tried to get in but got turned away! Obviously i didnt reach their high standards :D 40summat 27-07-2005, 16:55 Originally posted by Ousetunes Is that alright for yers? Seeing that catchphrase again made me smile Ousetunes. I remember the saturday night after Barry Noble passed away the managemend thought it would be right and proper to hold a minutes silence for him. this was midnight on a saturday night! all was going well until some wag called out IS THAT ALLREET FOR YUS! in the middle. We were ordered to find him and ban him for life, though i don't think he was found. I think it was a bizzare idea to have a minutes silence at that time. jennifer 27-07-2005, 17:09 Well I have memories of Hallam student nights there! Before the pulse and vogue days! We had our freshers ball there too! Have a vague memory of a ladies only bar that had good drink deals! Does anyone else remember this? What is happing with the building now then anyone know??? Pecora Nera 30-04-2007, 15:36 Kissing under the stairs Pecora Nera 30-04-2007, 15:36 First night club I ever went to JA5E 30-04-2007, 15:48 I also remember my early drinking career on Rock nights at Roxys. How we laughed..:hihi: babyboom 01-05-2007, 20:50 hi iworked at roxys many many years ago,, i worked bar 1,2 3 and anywhere kevin used to put me,,, do you remember mary on the door and mr hughes ??? mike dobson he was the big fat manager,, he died about 6yrs ago,,,do you remember any of the door staff??? and what about kevin the djs helper the dj was malcom???
