I used to work there and wondered, if anyone was willing to admit frequenting the often grubby little joint, they had any memories at all?

I was 17 when I first went to Roxy's (I am now 22) and when I walked in they made me sign up for a membership but I was not aware they also entered me into a prize draw I ended up walking out of Roxy's with a Tele and video, which i still have today.

So brilliant memory's for me.

I worked Mon, Weds, Thurs, Fri & Sat 1997 - til it closed. I worked Rock nights, everyone wanted to work them because the customers were all really nice on Mondays.

Ah, so it wasn't just me then :D

I hated the leering, squawking and obnoxiousness that went on the rest of the time :(

It sounds mad, but Rock Nights were so much more 'civilised' :hihi:

No that's true. The rest of the week was crazy withdrunk students throwing glass ashtrays at your head and the like. Mondays were a welcome breath of fresh air.

I Used To Be A Regular For The Monday Rock Nights.It Was A Real Change To Go In A Big,Plush Night Club When You'd Been Used To Going Rebels.
I Can Remember That Colin Slade Would Only Play About 3 Thrash Tunes All Night.I Think It Was To Keep The Real Drinkers At The Bar!

Lol. I quite miss it now I think about it and always feel a bit sad when I go by on the bus and see it.

I worked there very briefly when I was 18, didn't stay long as I couldn't stand the job..

My only memory is the job.. was never a customer :hihi:

wednesday student nights- that was our night. we had our own table upstairs by the little square dancefloor next to the bar. spirit and a mixer a quid- no arguments there.

shag at the leadmill on a monday
shag 2 on a tuesday
roxys on a wednesday
thursday- night off
fridays loveshack at the union
saturdays either crasher or poptarts
sundays- die!!!!

its amazing i ever got a degree at all! lol

Fantastic club - such a laugh, and had some great nights there.

Was on the hitman and her (dancing on stage) in 1988, saw a few cheesy acts (London Boys especially!) and just enjoyed going.

Got some great memories, and its such a waste as it is now.

I remember at a Monday rock night buying a round involving some pints of bitter and some of lager - and nobody could work out which was which - it all looked & tasted exactly the same.

The rock fashions were pretty outrageous in the late 80s/early 90s - it was the height of glam rock - and laods of folk dressed up for Roxys big rock night - does any evidence exist of what people actually used to wear? I'm sure nobody would believe you now if you tried to tell them...

I've said this in another thread but they used to have the most amzing gay nights in the 80's Chekkers Disco.

If they ever knock that building down I bet they'll never be able to remove that carpet.

Infact I had a good time every time I went to the Roxy, I think if you set off wanting a tacky night out you wouldn't have been dissapointed.

i went to the rock night once.......

my mate said he saw a bloke dressed as a girl at the urinal. that is only memory of that night!

I once saw a girl wee in a urinal, though it wasn't in the Roxy.

I was quite impressed.

I remember some mates going specially to see "The Hitman And Her" being filmed in the Roxy.

I worked there early eighties, Pyjama jump night during rag week was a nightmare.
We where told to "let them play" in other words behaviour that would get you thrown out any other night, was ok tonight because nobody will be offended.
It was ticket only via student union, so much like a private party.
the result was mayhem lots of injuries with broken glass (usually sitting on it)
Unconscious vomit covered students everywhere, for the doormen and bar staff it was the longest night of your life.

Don't have too many memories apart from the hazy ones :partyhat: but i DO remember going into the flea market that used to be held in there. Now that was a crazy place to hold a glorified jumble sale if there ever was one :loopy:

I worked there, usually on bar 3. It stopped opening upstairs because people just stopped coming. I certainly remember mary who eventually ran the cloak room.

Yeah his name was James. Remember him from Rebs when he he was just "a little bit TOO glammy". (Gold Lame handbag etc). Really nice kid. Changed his name to Jenna? anyway, went the full hog and became a female. Like I said, great person. Remember Roxy's Rock night very fondly. Still got my Roxys Rock night card and loads of piccys for when I get old (too late!) and need reminding!

Roxies had to be the one place you were more or less assured of getting in to if you were slightly underage. The bouncers could be charmed with a smile and a batted eyelid [just as well I loked older than i was as that probably wouldn't of worked for me] I remember two of the staff from the early 80's, Alison one of the bar staff, long hair and glasses and Eddy a half caste chinese guy who worked on the door. I have certain memories of the place most of which I try not to remember although one or two of the rock nights were enjoyable [if that's the right word]

I never made it into Roxy's. Got hammered on my mates 16th and tried to get in but got turned away! Obviously i didnt reach their high standards :D

I remember the saturday night after Barry Noble passed away the managemend thought it would be right and proper to hold a minutes silence for him.
this was midnight on a saturday night! all was going well until some wag called out IS THAT ALLREET FOR YUS! in the middle.
We were ordered to find him and ban him for life, though i don't think he was found.
I think it was a bizzare idea to have a minutes silence at that time.

Well I have memories of Hallam student nights there! Before the pulse and vogue days!

We had our freshers ball there too!

Have a vague memory of a ladies only bar that had good drink deals! Does anyone else remember this?

I also remember my early drinking career on Rock nights at Roxys.

My best memory was an after show party for Saxon. The DJ played a Saxon song, and the only people to get up and dance was..Saxon!
