why the heck do you want a conifer hedge?

besides being a complete nuisance if damaged (they DO NOT recover), they allow harmful insects to overwinter causing crop damage we have to spray against

what's wrong with a fast growing indigenous hedge, which can be pruned harshly if required without ill effect

there's a couple of threads on here already with some good suggestions

don't forget that fast growing hedge means cutting it lots and lots!

I'm afraid I'm still looking for something suitable for our garden

if your's is sheltered, the stuff with those little blue pompom flowers on is fantastic - and very fast growing! I've got just one of those between us and next door, where it's out of the wind

I thought about headge a while ago instead of fencing, but not only have you got the issue with keeping it neat and within height limits etc. , It will also grow wide and lots of neighbour disputes start over hedges growing out of control.

I've had a dispute with a neighbour over a fence too, so it probably has more to do with the neighbour than the boundary materials ;)

Hedges live for longer than fences, are mostly cheaper, and stand up to the high winds in sheffield alot better... plus if you live on a main road they absorb sound instead of bouncing it, and they provide an environment for all kinds of wildlife

Whats the "standard" type of hedge then, its just to fill a gap near the bottom?

B&Q are selling Leyland conifers (grow 2-3 ft a year) for £2.98 each.

Hawthorn makes a lovely hedge, a bit slow growing, but its British and the birds love it.
