Ive just planted out an area in my garden with all sorts really.

Wanting advice on what to do when winter comes around....

the ones im concerned about are fuchsia, every where says the frost will kill them off and they wont come back next year.

then there is the geraniums do they need to be potted for winter?

or will they die back like all the others ive got they die back and come back the year after :)

it depends on what type of plant it is.

You can get Hardy Fuschias that may well stay evergreen all winter, and usefull as a pretty hedge, others die back to something that resembles a dead twig, but sprouts again come the springtime... or you can buy the bedding variety that will die with frosts.

Again with the geranium. Many people buy a 'hardy geranium' also known as a cranesbill that will die back in the winter, but grow again each spring. This is a perennial.
BUT a bedding geranium also known as a Pelargonium will die with frost.

It can be a good idea to get to know the latin names of plants so you know exactly what type you're dealing with.

If you have picked up bedding varieties of these plants. You MUST watch the weather forecast for low night time temperatures. Anything below 10 C and I'd cover your plants with horticultural fleece (cheap as chips from Wilko's or a garden centre) otherwise you're going to lose them.
If you can bring them indoors, all the better for now.
I'm still hardening off my bedding plants/pts and hanging baskets. (which means I'm bringing them out in the day, back inside for the night, longer and longer before leaving them out permanently after danger of frosts has past, late may, early june give or take)

Many beginners fall into the trap of buying bedding plants and planting them out thinking its safe because the garden centres/supermarkets are selling them, but it's not. They'll die if not given protection and being hardened off properly because they've been sat all cosey on the shelf inside...then the shops make a mint, cos you're back with your money to buy more!

Now then, here comes the good bit.

If you've bought bedding varieties, they've survived and given you a good display through out the summer, dig em up, pop into pots and bring them indoors for the winter and you can take cuttings so next year, you're pennies are saved...sell them onto others to help pay for new varieties

i think these are "hardy ones" as it did say that on the sign we got them from im sure of it. Markham Grange out doncaster way :)

IF they die off over winter, il go get some more next year lol dont think soil is just right yet either think its a bit too much clay in it, it holds water very well. so mixing it with compost to try and sort it.

Time will tell :) if they die il get some more lol
