View Full Version : YO! Sushi opens on Monday in Meadowhall
GeorgieC 07-05-2009, 09:45 Does anyone love Sushi here? My friend has just told me that YO! Sushi is coming to Sheffield and is opening on Monday just outside House of Frazer in Meadowhall. I'm so excited as I've eaten there loads in London but can't find anywhere quite like it here. My favourite dishes are the duck rolls and salmon hand rolls!
swordfish1 07-05-2009, 09:51 In what way can you not find anything like it around here? Sakushi on Campo Lane has the conveyor belt method of getting sushi. Wasabisabi, East Ocean Cafe and Yama sushi all do Sushi. All 4 are in Sheffield, tho admittedly not in Meadowhall.
GeorgieC 07-05-2009, 09:55 Agree - on the conveyor belt but I think YO! has a unique vibe
I went to a Yo! Sushi in London. It was bad enough that I wouldn't use that chain again whenever there's an alternative - and in Sheffield we have alternatives.
Captain_Scarlet 07-05-2009, 12:21 Agree - on the conveyor belt but I think YO! has a unique vibeIndeed, only when you go to a souless chain of over priced food and sanitised surroundings will you get this unique vibe. Yo! Sushi! which has nothing authentic in it was on telly a couple of years ago, its directors, managers and staff are shocking, customer care, phone manners, getting orders wrong, non-English speaking phone operators...
Get yersen to Wasasabi on London Road, it is unique.
grub_lover 08-05-2009, 17:19 Sakushi have a conveyor belt in the city centre. not the same market i don’t reckon as its much classier and upmarket but strangely cheaper than yo. The atmosphere is more relaxed with top service so a nice meal out on a weekend is an option at Sakushi, where Yo is more a quick bite place.
Sakushi is top restaurant standard and the fish is very high quality for the UK. Sometimes i think it’s a shame the conveyor belt is there because it devalues the place, but then it’s still entertaining. Last time i went to Yo! sushi the salmon was so thin on the nigiri i could see threw it.
will be interesting to see how they compete and if they do? i heard yo where going into st pauls in the city centre until Sakushi opened. I went to Edinburgh a few months ago and they opened and closed there with in a year!
The cheeky thing with yo is they have prices starting from £1.70 which gives it a cheap perception, but almost everything is on the £3.70 plates so you are forced to spend more.
CHarrison 10-05-2009, 19:07 I am off to YO! Sushi tomorrow - see you their!
I heard from my cousin that it's arrived already. I was surprised when she did say that it's only outside House of Fraser. Maybe it's not a large dining place? I'm keen to check it out the next time I'm there though. The only franchaise which used to be up North is the one in Selfridges in Manchester. I think they have expanded quite a bit. I still find it odd some of the combination which they put together, and it is bordering onto tapas style eating really. There is one in St Pancras station as well.
will it have real sushi, ie raw fish or just premade shipped in stuff?
chinaski 10-05-2009, 21:30 will it have real sushi, ie raw fish or just premade shipped in stuff?
Who knows.
It's a contentious issue anyhow with sushi. I doubt if Wasabisabi, Yama sushi and sakushi are making their sushi/ sashimi with fish delivered same day.
Hmmm... I just wondered about the risks of selling raw fish in such a big chain, never had Yo sushi before, but I guess you just assume they're handling properly, may give a try once it's open if I can bear meadowhell!
the majority of it is pre made and shipped out i've witnessed a few such deliveries myself.....
needless to say it's put me off eating there
How fresh is premade before we consider it manky I wonder?
I once picked up a supermarket sushi pack that was including raw fish, but the contents looked like they'd moved at packing I assume and bits were hanging out. Eesh.
Still, would love to try a proper place, saw one on portobello rd in London and it looked fab!
grub_lover 10-05-2009, 23:05 im pretty sure all retaurants do get fresh fish delivered every day! such small restaurants would never ever survive without gaining the reputation of fresh fish..
i have my favourite tuna sashimi as yama and sakushi, and its always beautifuly red.
also, nigiri has generous amount of tuna ontop.
cant wait to see the colour of the tuna at yo sushi!
if anyone goes, let me know the colour!
Some of the things could be premade, but others you have to cook it and then put it together! :hihi:
The branch in St Pancras shows you the chef making the sushi. i.e. using the rice and then slapping a piece of fish on it or something like that.
Actually, you cannot pre-made sushi roll and expect it to be fresh. I have seen a youtube video and it does show that some supermarkets will buy frozen sushi, but I don't think Yo Sushi make pre-made rolls. Maybe they would pre-make the skewers and cook on the day, but if you want fresh crispy seaweeds, you can't pre-frozen it. It's just not possible. That's why I stay away from supermarket sushi if I can.
Surely you can tell the difference once you try it?
Think a trip to East Ocean or Sakushi is in order, so I have something to compare to the m+s version!
grub_lover 10-05-2009, 23:12 both east ocean and sakushi are nice.. sakushi are my favourite! they have the conveoyr belt which is always fun~! enjoy the sushi!
hmmmm im hungry!
Cheers grub lover... had both recommended to me... i can imagine the belt being like those random miniclip games (that i have no experience of *cough*!). Do you just pay for the plates left over at the end of meal then?
both east ocean and sakushi are nice.. sakushi are my favourite! they have the conveoyr belt which is always fun~! enjoy the sushi!

You sound like you have shares in that place, cos every single sushi thread on this forum, you've not critically talked about the sushi itself, but just praised Sakushi anyway. Do you even like sushi? Or are you just promoting your friend's establishment? I'm curious...
grub_lover 11-05-2009, 07:38 Ha, your right i do. But then i only came on sheffield forum to talk about it in the first place. then naturally i searched for sushi and commented on similar issues, then you contiue to get emails from sf and so on. Not rocket science or some sort of conspiracy, i think you will find with people who have less than 100 posts they are usually on the same topic.
Anyway i would like to think i was friends with the management but they probably just see me as another customer. we are on first name basis but then so are alot of people who go there. Surely that is just a credit to the friendly staff.
is to give praise for somewhere bad? why would you be critical of an establishment you hold in high regard? i have shown praise for all sushi places in sheffield but see sakushi as my favourite and i express that.
Overpriced and pretentious, I think Yo is a good match for Meadowhell. I'll most likely be steering clear.
I'm surprised East Ocean Cafe gets so many good write-ups, maybe we were just unlucky but the food we got there was pretty awful.
swordfish1 11-05-2009, 10:23 ;I'm surprised East Ocean Cafe gets so many good write-ups, maybe we were just unlucky but the food we got there was pretty awful.
Possibly just unlucky. I've been there probably 20+ times and never had a bad meal. I've been to Wasabisabi more than that, but over a longer period of time. However the last time I went there it was very poor. If it was the first time I'd been, I'd have been wondering why people rave about it. Everywhere can have an "off" day.
Ha, your right i do. Fair enough. If you like their food, then you must like their food. Though, if you were a serious sushi diner, and compare it overall between all these places, then you would know which stands out a lot more. I am actually is surpised that you rave about it, but yes, everyone's cup of tea is different.
However, apart from rating whether a place is good or not. I personally like to read reviews about what is good and bad about a dining place, as a critique and homage to the chefs. Maybe that's just my view on reading these kind of foodie reviews. I personally like to banter with like-minded foodies who like to try and express what they like and dislike about a dish, and a place. If there is a fan club, surely the thread title would be "ABC Fan Club" ? Just a thought...
Saying that, back on topic, have you ever tried Yo! Sushi? As afterall, this thread is about Yo! Have you ever tried their sushi, and what do you like or dislike about it? Cos they are another conveyor belt establishment who managed to bring conveyor belt sushi to the mass market.
grub_lover 12-05-2009, 13:56 anyone been to joke sushi yet? whoooopsie i mean yo!sushi
??
maggi009 12-05-2009, 16:31 :hihi:I work at Yo! Meadowhall and even though we've only been officially trading for 2 days I can safely say that it's the best company I have ever worked 4.
Everything is above normal standards. Kitchen hygiene is great. All kitchen staff wash their hands every 20 mins and also in between too.
All our fish is delivered daily. No frozen crap here. U cannot see through our salmon on the nigiris that we make.
All food is on belt for MAX 2 hours. If u look on top of the lids it'll tell u the time that dish is made.
Customer service is fantastic and tips are showing that already.
It's not all raw fish we also have a hot food menu which is also fantastic.
No mushy peas though I'm afraid. Come and give us a try.:hihi:
maggi009 12-05-2009, 16:36 We also have open kitchen guys so u can see your food being made to order. No secrets in our kitchens xxx

grub_lover 12-05-2009, 16:54 yeah im coming this weekend i think, maybe sunday..
fingers crossed ill be pleasantly suprised!
Fresh fish delivered every day thats awesome?
is it from japan? ;)
losthighway 13-05-2009, 17:31 The idea of being sat outside House of Fraser in the middle of Meadhowhell really puts me off tbh. I really want to try Yo Sushi but would rather travel down to Nottingham and go to a proper 'restaurant' style environment. It's a real shame they didn't open in Leopold Square.
Walked past today. I didn't realise it was in the middle of the mall as I presumed it was in the Oasis. Have to admit I think it's a good idea as it gives it a bustling atmosphere, was very busy so seems to be having the desired effect. Looks like you could dive in for a quick snack or go for something more substantial. Will be trying it...

kkrittin 19-05-2009, 15:08 i love Sakushi too...it's nice and a lot cheaper than Yo! sushi indeed
In fact, i thought it's different markets and targets.
However, Yo sushi is still cool and standing out more in public in term of their decoration and attraction.
Johnandpolly 19-05-2009, 16:56 Well I love Yo! Sushi.

Im quite excited about it 2!
grub_lover 22-05-2009, 16:11 yosushi fans!! oh oh dear!
i think macdonalds does the best 100% prime beef burgers, with a nice stilton cheese, and places on a lovely white italian bread!
see a trend??
big rant, but yo sushi is awful! fact!

Surely that's just your opinion.
Do you happen to run a sushi restaurant your continual belittling of anyone who decides to eat there is getting boring.
grub_lover 22-05-2009, 17:34 So i cant have a bad opinion?
i dont have a sushi bar but i have a personal sushi chef, My wife!
I think my dislike for yo is more the fact that we have 3 sushi places to go to in sheffield but everyone is desperate to go to Yo! why is that? why not support local businesses.
you are complaining that i am getting boring by expressing my opinion, all people have said on this thread is 'i love yo' etc etc now that is f*cking boring! maybe say why? or express an experience that has given you that impression.
My experiences have not been so great. my main issue being how thin the fish is cut.
You're having a laugh! I was at yOSushi friday nite and the fish was perfect.. definitely not too thin.
Grub Lover I'd be really suprised if you werent in some way connected with Sakushi, all your posts point that way. I've been to Wasabisabi, yO!Sushi and Sakushi, I think there's room for them all, there's no need to diss the competition!
yOSushi's sushi tasted amazing, was maybe a little badly rolled sometimes but I guess they've got new chefs and it'll take a while for them to get everything perfect. I love how the kitchen is all completely open and you can amuse yourself watching the chefs at work.
Wasabisabi is still the best in Sheffield at the moment, but yOSushi is a fun place for a sushi fix when you're at Hell.
grub_lover 25-05-2009, 21:17 Ha, your right i do. why is this so hard to understand? i have given praise to yama, wasabisabi and east ocean but because i dont like YO! sushi i must be part of the competition. The Suspicion will now have a influence on my posts, so if i ever comment on a sushi topics and mention sakushi etc then i am connected? or if i say i dont like yo i am connected? this is a forum so why cant i say what i think with out suspicion.
I think the objection is more that you're saying the same thing again and again.
