View Full Version : Mother drowns saving children
I logged in to BBC News today and one of the top stories was Mother drowns saving children. While this is very sad, is it really necessary to publicise it? I've seen similar stories in the past and I've always felt the press are simply going for the "shock" factor.
It seems like they get some kind of pleasure from making the rest of us sad?! There was nothing to learn from this story, just the fact that a family had lost it's wife and mother.
I wish the press would put more effort in making us smile, and less in trying to shock us with stories which contain no "news".
:?
The media have a lot to answer for, they are constantly stirring the muck up about everything, it is they who have caused all these demonstration's all over the world.
The Daily Mirror's campaign of "not in our name" has roused the rabble in every country and caused all this unrest. Why didn't the peace protester's demonstrate when over three thousand innocent civilian's were murdered on 9/11 in the twin tower's building's in New York.
Some people have a very blinkered view and are are easily swayed by propaganda, instead of thinking for themselves, they beleive everythying they read in the newspaper's. :( :( :(
Moon Maiden 20-03-2003, 12:43 I couldn't find the story on BBC news for all the war stuff on there. So I cannot comment on how it was written.
In most cases journalists do play on the sensationalist aspect - but I think it is good if the article was done in a respectful way - that shows this woman as a wonderful mother for her children.
As I say I couldnt' find the stoy so I don't know how it was written.

I agree though, it's easy to see why so many people suffer from depression while all that's in our newspapers is war, war, Blair, war, mother dies saving children, war, Beckham.

There you go, believing everything you read in the papers. What about the millions of people who protested, yet don't read the Daily Mirror?
Your suggestion that the Daily Mirror (odious rag that it is) stirred up all this unrest is risible. Presumably the Countryside March was a result of the rabble being roused by the Daily Telegraph?
The peace protesters didn't protest against 9/11 they condemned it. Maybe because their government didn't enact the atrocity. Millions of people stood up to be counted in their condemnation of the attack, myself included, but protesting against their government wouldn't really make sense would it?
Your assertion that some people have a very blinkered view and are easily swayed by propaganda is undoubtably true, yet you seem to exclude yourself from that definition. Why?
Presumably because you have a monopoly on objective truth, whilst the rest of us labour under delusions induced by the massively funded anti-war campaign, or under delusions induced by the even more massively funded, governmentally sanctioned pro war campaign, right?
cheapthrillz 18-10-2009, 22:10 I was going to ask but then after searching I came across this thread, and I suppose this was one of the first topics on Sheffield's general forum?
The very first topic was looking for somewhere to go out for lunch in the town centre (that's the base reason why the forum was started). This one is almost 4 months after the forum started.
I thought this was the first topic:

It is Thread ID number 1 after all.
Maybe it was deleted for being in the wrong section? :D
How many inaugural sections were there?.
I see the word hero used a hell of a lot and most of the time the people being called a hero do not really deserve it however this mother gave up her live to save those kids so she really is a hero.
But that is the thing about real heroes isn't it,most of them die being heroes.
How many inaugural sections were there?.
Perhaps a more likely reason is at some point someone dug it up from the past and people started bickering about Admin decisions on it, so it got deleted :o
