View Full Version : Why are there no good sandwich shops in Sheffield?
Getting a good sandwich or full english breakfast seems impossible. Most sandwich shops, sell 'catering' sausages, which for your info contains, 25% mechanically recovered chicken, mmm nice (what on earth is that?) Maybe i'm just picky...thoughts, suggestions or anyone wanna go in business?
(my first topic so feel free to say get lost:) (i did a search and the only other sandwich one i found was woodys sandwich shop.)
there are loads of good sarnie shops! Healds on Abbey Lane is great, seashells cafe is also good. Theres one up at Wisewood, and the pork shops down hillsbro do good ones too. I'm sure other people can think of more!
Relish on West Street is ace!
Best sandwich shop franchise in Sheff IMO would have to be Greggs.. As they're the only sandwich shop that'll make me a cheese sandwich with SLICED cheese instead of that annoyingly messy grated rubbish..
I am of course obliged to moot Dora Websters near the Leppings Lane tram stop cos Mum worked there for 11 years.

Greggs is not the best sandwich shop - they sell nasty plastic sandwiches. Relish on West Street do lovely sarnies.
Staniforths on Chapel Walk do cheese slices if that's what you like.
sugarnspice 05-07-2005, 19:37 And there's a nice one on Eccy Road but can't remember what it's called. Just past the Pizza Hut / Tesco bit.
Snax Gap on London Road is ACE.
Massive butties at bloody cheap prices.
Me and Captain_Scarlet have had long converstions on this subject. My favorite is Nibblers on err dunno what the streets called, but its the one behind the SHU Union Teapot Center, on the corner, and one on the corner of Nether Lane in Eccelesfield. Also there is one down Chesterfield Road that comes high on the rankings.
Joel
Berberis 05-07-2005, 22:02 Woody's on Eccy road is good but full of smelly students :gag:
The pork shop in Hillsborough does ace pork sandwiches! But that’s a whole other thread :D.
Being a " White van Woman " i would say i am the worlds authority on Sheffield sarni shops...Out of all i have tried all over the city...and bearing in mind i work for Environmental Health dept...i would say the 3 that stand out are.....
1st Master Chef, Staniforth Road
2nd Sarni Shop, Duke Street...( Sorry cant remember the name..its next to Chip Shop)
3rd The Diner, Neepsend Lane

pete_jim 06-07-2005, 08:21 Opposite Tesco is Spoilt for Choice very good apparently.

Joel Indeed we have and we both admitted that both our regulars spoil us !
I amdit I don't know Joel's, but Mr B's on Chesterfield Rd was recommended to me B4 I even moved to the area.

Commonside is the flat(ish) bit before you get to Walkley when heading up the hill from the university.
Scott's Pantry (near uni) hasn't had a mention. Damn good food. Apparently they do great bacon sarnies too
Theres a place opposite tescos on eccy road that does a fine stilton grape and walnut bap. I used to live near it. Its great! Then there lunch stop on west street. Let them stand long against the hideousness of Subway!
StarSparkle 06-07-2005, 11:56 Deli France on Chapel Walk do lovely baguettes  I have a weakness for their egg mayonnaise!
StarSparkle
oasismark 06-07-2005, 13:23 What about Scotts near the Uni.
Great sarnies, but prices have gone up alot recenlty since new managment.
Best sarnie ever, in world, from scotts;
Crispy bacon and chicken mayo, with salad on soft frence. (with onion and egg).
Wahoo, very rich and loads of mayo,
will make you sleep all afternoon. but very nice.
What about that van that loiters near the sheffield uni? Johns takeaway I think. Used to always get a BEST on french when I was off to lectures. Thus feeling v full for the rest of the day...

Commonside is where you say you live, if you don't wanna say Upperthorpe, but Walkley sounds too posh.
Thanks for the suggestions. Theres one near me, the crookes one, i've not tried. I still disagree with one every 500yds. Read my original bit about the catering sausages. Most sell these. euw
simpleton 06-07-2005, 17:14 Having eaten at a vast amount of sarny shops i would recomend,
Mr B's 87cheasterfield road,Bloomers Abbydale road,Totley deli,
Supersnaks queens road Bigfat bellybusters here and cheap and the best of all Beres pork sarnys 7shops in hillsboro they also make there own bread its the best but not if your veggy:suspect:
Hope this helps abit
miss_berty 06-07-2005, 17:25 stancers on west st (top end near harley/uni/swim inn etc) is lush. roast veg n feta. YUM.....or have I said that already?
On a roll in broomy do good paninis too.. hooray
KookyKoo 06-07-2005, 17:33 I'm with tim_rutter, lunch stop on West St rules!!! They're very good if you're picky (as I am!)
Woodseats deli on chesterfield road is fab for eat in or takeaway. they do just about everything u could think of for a sarnie shop
evildrneil 06-07-2005, 17:52 Most of the independant sandwich shops on West Street are pretty good - though my vote goes to Relish :) Pity about the Subways and Starbucks bringing down the area!
Herbaliser 06-07-2005, 18:18 Commonside is where you say you live, if you don't wanna say Upperthorpe, but Walkley sounds too posh.
[/B]
Commonside is where you say you live if you live on the road named Commonside.
Walkley too posh?! :P
Well i'm within 50 yds of it, does that count? also i find that when i'm in a taxi at night, and drunk, saying 'commonside' gets me within staggering distance of my house. Any other area name, and they take me the wrong way. (just to stray from the sandwich topic) :)
The deli on Hillsborough corner used to be good. Shame it closed...
Munchies on Holme lane is decently average - but accomodating for the veggie population...
Crusty Cob is apparently rated well for their bacon sarnies but not eating the stuff I couldn't give a personal review
sheffbag 08-07-2005, 07:12 Turners in city centre for their ham salad on granary french or the new chicken and bacon
bugger its 8.15 and i want a sandwich after reading all this
dont know if its been mentioned becuase I cant be bothered to spend 15 minutes reading about sandwiches, but the best shop in the world is Seans at top of Eccy road by VW garage..without doubt.
its cheap, great and its cheap. again.
OwlsChick 08-07-2005, 14:40 Subway in orchard square
My Muva Works Their
SCOTTS PANTRY on Glossop Road opposite the west end pub, yet again been voted the best sarnie shop in sheffield by the steel city press, you wont taste better Bacon or Pork Sausages , Cold sarnies are a treat and best of all The Salad boxes WOW!!!!!!
tom dipp at the back of the sheff arena is pretty good.
Called in Pollards cafe in Meadowhell with some verseas visitors.
Asked the counter girl if they had some nice bread for the sandwiches we wereordering and got the reply,
'We've got white or brown, that's all'
Anybody would think we were living in the fifties with their take it or leave it attitude.
How sad they do not give a s**t about service or tempting the customers.
For future visitors where would you get a good sandwich made with decent bread in Meadowhell or nearby?
Happy Days
rosiebear 11-07-2005, 20:29 i eat at FOB and i always enjoy the sanwiches they serve toasties as well with salad, not too expesive either.
FOB is on church st and used to be coffee rev.
Woodys near Hunters bar is fabulous, chicken and bacon club great for hangovers, but too much queuing when ur feeling queasy!x

Sadly Stancers is now closed for good :( Roast Veg and Feta was my favourite sandwich from there too!
If anyone is up the Cliffe at lunchtimes, Deli at The Swan is good on Attercliffe Road. They bake all the baguettes fresh, the breads always warm :)
where is Master Chef,on Staniforth Road.would love to go to a good shop
DragonofAna 12-07-2005, 01:49 Shines Pantry on Langsett Road. No idea how long it will remain open though thanks to a sandwich cart that has pitched near the old presto building on penistone road and gets most of the penistone works business.
Lovely bacon and egg sandwich's. They also do a B.E.S.T. on French that ought to fill even the most starving. And they do breakfast in a tray for a couple of quid - bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, tomatoes, fried bread and toast.
They open something like 8 til 1 for hot stuff, and until 1:30 for cold sandwiches.

That is so rare now, will have to try this place, cheers dragon, i tried 'hercule'(crookes) today as suggested earlier, not bad that place.
mrplodge 12-07-2005, 05:19 Make your own sandwiches, this will save you money.
Lily's on penistone road in hillsbro.
Fresh bread baked on premises, decent butchers sausages, lovely ham. All made fresh to order.
Lots of nice cakes too.
Has to be #1.
Sausage & tomato with ketchup & pepper - regular sat morning treat - yum!
Don't you just hate the way at spoilt for choice when you ask for a "Large" sandwich, they get a nice big breadcake down, and chop it in half!
CHEEKY BARSTOOLS! :loopy:
I would recommend the one by Richer Sounds on the way up to Broomhill.
Massive sandwiches, good service, gorgeous girls and a pub next door.
Litotes
Oh, forgot - it's called nicky's

Your right, i do sometimes, but when i'm taxi driving, i cant transport or power my grill in it. Perhaps in this heat i could try frying on the bonnet as they do in the US.
ToryCynic 12-07-2005, 13:51 You could of course try the local BP garage - ;)

furry_chick 13-07-2005, 09:42 Woodys on Eccy road - Gorgeous!

my missis works in roneys at sharrowvale they do top sarnies especially the roast pork ones.
best sandwich shop in sheffield is scott's on glossop road, ya cant beat it!
RoseShefLive 13-07-2005, 15:06 Look no further but Woody's on Ecclesall Road by hunters bar roundabout. Best sarnies in the world.
Nearer town - site gallery cafe do marvellous sarnies, hot and cold. They're on paternoster row.
Just takes a bit of exploring to see that there is no shortage of good butties in this town :-)
im impartial to Deli at the Swan, in attercliffe

Yes!!!Seans Pork sarnies are the daddy ,but is say that ive now gone down the road to LAs for there sweet Chillie Chicken Salad.....i rare treat
Although this thread about the best sandwich shop....
I'm amazed (and shocked!) at how many 'Greggs' sandwich shops have sprung up recently in Sheffield city centre...!
Each to their own, but I think it's shocking that we've as many Greggs as we've pound shops!!!:suspect: :gag:
Sign of the times?
Who gives these faceless organisations the go ahead?!:loopy:
On a roll. I love that shop. But yeah admittedly good sarny shops have seemed to disappear

bettison.org 04-08-2006, 12:31 Another vote for Healds (or Ross's as we call it) from me - on Abbey Lane Woodseats end.
Jivester 04-08-2006, 12:39 E'ffin sandwich shop on Effingham Road best butties in Yorkshire
sarcastic32 04-08-2006, 13:06 Fantastic one in castle square called tiffanys!! They do exellent sandwiches and breakfats, cheap as well.
I still say Gregg's are good, at least there when you ask for a plain cheese sandwich you GET plain cheese, not that infernal grated crap that makes a mess everywhere when it falls out of your sandwich
Ousetunes 04-08-2006, 13:24 Sticky Fingers on Commonside - decent sized sandwiches and a good variety to choose from.
Nearby, Tuckwoods on Barber Road is now my usual lunch-time sandwich shop. Huge chicken/salad/beetroot sarnies.
Yummee.
I have just done a food Hygeine Course as i want o open a sandwich shop or do business lunches/buffets etc
I was looking at the Barlborough/creswell area/ beighton
you havent travelled too far in your search, theres the scotts one behind the childrens hospital, excellent food and service, then the hungry wolf on infirmary road, you cant get better.......
Best I've ever seen in Sheffield is Charlies Pantry, Netheredge.
CHAIRBOY 04-08-2006, 17:30 My wife says Sarnis - High Street - good value and friendly service. I know O'Brien's in Dublin and she tells me there is one on Chapel Walk in Sheffield.
Nicky's in Broomhill is quite good - and the girls in there are a right laugh!
MumphitMan 05-08-2006, 00:36 The butchers on Sharrowvale road opposite the school does fantastic butties and very reasonable
TinaTina 05-08-2006, 00:57 Is that tiny shop still on the corner the car park near furnival gate? I think it was called "the great big sandwich shop" .
They could only get two people in at a time. If you wanted the biggest size sandwich you had to ask for a great big one.
I remember their sandwiches being great.
wow, this was my first thread over a year ago, i cant believe its gained momentum again. lol ...
i do like tuckwoods on Barber Road as Ousetunes pointed out, but i had an all day breakfast at Morrisons in Hillsbro last Sunday, and OMG that was nice.
I have just done a food Hygeine Course as i want o open a sandwich shop or do business lunches/buffets etc
I did the food hygiene course about 8 years ago, and didnt eat for a month after watching those videos they show you..:gag:
good luck anyway, (as i first pointed out, catering sausages should be banned, dont sell them and you'll be fine)

Er because its sheffield??
nice one on rutland road - opposite blakeUK
Does a lovely cheese and ham salad in a breadcake - cheap too!
EdnaKrabappe 05-08-2006, 09:27 Stumpies on the Quayside... the bread in there is amazing and the choice of fillings and the guy behind the counter knows EVERYONE and what they have in their regular sandwiches... and he never fails to make me smile with his cheery nature!
bluesandtwos 05-08-2006, 09:29 woodies is good, but a bit tricky tring to get near it in the course of my days driving around sheffield. another very good place I recommend is big J's, the catering van on herries road. do a fantastic breakfast and butties. I also pass that several times a day so get more chance to visit.
benson 64 05-08-2006, 09:49 JOINT on woodseats...fantastic food...friendly staff....the melts are to die for....been most days this week....can never choose as theres so much...
hot pork/beef etc....but please do try the melts....
Stumpies on the Quayside... the bread in there is amazing and the choice of fillings and the guy behind the counter knows EVERYONE and what they have in their regular sandwiches... and he never fails to make me smile with his cheery nature!
I agree, Stumpys which is on Victoria Quays makes great sandwiches. All the ingredients are fresh and good quality. The sandwichs aree made however you like them and 'Stumpy' is always cheery and you can have a decent chat with him.
charis87 05-08-2006, 19:09 woodys on ecclesall rd is amazing!!!!!! chicken, bacon, cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise on a baguette is highly reccommended and bloody cheap!
Try Stumpy's for fabulous sandwiches. It's a bit out of the way because its at Victoria Quays, but well worth the walk. You're spoilt for choice on the bread you can have your sandwich on - sundried tomato ciabatta, plain ciabatta, white bread, granary etc etc. And the bread rolls are enormous. There's a choice of fillings - ordinary ones such as cheese salad to more interesting ones such as organic wensleydale & onion marmalade - delicious. With/without salad, add beetroot, pickled onions, coleslaw, whatever you want. Prices are fine - cheaper than a Boots meal deal.
As an added bonus, when the weather's fine, you can relax & enjoy watching the world go by at the quayside.
dynamicdebz 05-08-2006, 20:53 You just gotta try a subway sandwich!
A bit pricey but well worth it.
westilad80 06-08-2006, 18:26 Best sandwich shop franchise in Sheff IMO would have to be Greggs.. As they're the only sandwich shop that'll make me a cheese sandwich with SLICED cheese instead of that annoyingly messy grated rubbish..

I have to agree, Greggs Chicken Mayo are devine..... Also another good sarnie shop situated at Olive Grove next to the hairdressers, they do the best sarnies ever, always busy. The fillings are well generous.
katy1981 06-08-2006, 18:37 Getting a good sandwich or full english breakfast seems impossible. well to anwser your question mechanically recoverd meat is as follows,
chickens well any animal are killed, plucked, gutted all bits from inside usually end up in pate's and meat spreads
then the whole animal is then chopped up into cuts of meat like steaks roasting joints ect ect
then they save all the other bits that go into other meat by products
and finally whats left at the end of the conveyor belt is removed mechanicaly and sold to burger, chicken nuggets, turkey twizzlers and other such rubbish kids eat making companies at a cheap price they dont mind selling it cheap as theyve made their big money from the items above they then add loads of flavouring and addatives and lots of other chemicals and charge the earth for it.
hope that makes sense i seemed to ramble near to the end :hihi:
Carborundum 06-08-2006, 21:12 Unforunately there are not half enough sandwich shops in Sheffield to satisfy the working population of a lunchtime - witness the queues for most of them - especially fargate, orchard square, round the cathedral etc. whats happening - are Sheffield Council blocking more of them ?
penny_crayon 07-08-2006, 08:30 Don't you just hate the way at spoilt for choice when you ask for a "Large" sandwich, they get a nice big breadcake down, and chop it in half!
CHEEKY BARSTOOLS! :loopy:
Yes, but could you honestly eat that whole breadcake's worth of sandwich??!
My fav sandwich in Spoilt for Choice is the turkey club - turkey, bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, onion, mustard.... mmmmmmmmm!! But I'm always stuffed afterwards.
Rich, I agree with you it's better to have sliced cheese in sandwiches, but just cos it's grated doesn't necessarily mean it's crap. It's the same cheese, just cut up smaller.
And there are plenty of places who do sliced rather than grated cheese, not just Greggs - like O'Briens on Chapel walk. Also, it depends what kinda cheese you like - personally I don't rate Greggs sandwiches, and think their cheese tastes plasticy. Try Woodys sandwich shop for the best bacon and brie baguettes, all warm and lovely.
Anyone tried the new place next door to Dulo? It's called mtgg, website here (http://www.mtggfood.com/). Only been in once when it had only been open a couple of days, and was small inside, but sandwich not bad!
Is that place on Chapel Walk still there? Think it was called Deli France or something similar. That used to be nice.
hachandhach 07-08-2006, 11:17 L's Kitchen on ben lane wadsley is fantastic
The Lunch Stop on West St is nice....mmtgs near Waitrose is also quite nice. For ready prepared stuff Greggs, Waitrose and Sainsbury's. Subway is quite nice but rather expensive for what you get.
Yog Sothoth 07-08-2006, 11:42 Try Amanda's on Arundel Street. best bacon butties in Sheffield or anywhere for that matter. Just ask for a bacon and egg Mega, with crispy bacon. DROOOLLL...

i used to go there loads when i went to hallam, have been trying again for ages but it always seems to be closed. veg sos and mushroom mega was my fave :) with a mug of tea
Yog Sothoth 07-08-2006, 13:44 Yeah they open about 7am and close around 1-ish i think. A lot of my colleagues go there rather than the handier Nibblers, which has a similar range of grub.
Got to give my vote to Relish on West Street too. Great sandwiches and the manageress is gorgeous
Try rooneys on sharrow vale road, just down from woodys 2nd right if im not mistaken.
yeah jackie 11-08-2006, 20:52 Yes ive been to Joint on Woodseats. The sandwiches are to die for. Best hot Roast sandwiches ive ever had. I went in yesterday and had a hot Roast chicken, coriander pesto and red onion melt and it was the best. In fact dont think ive ever had a bad sandwich there. TOP FOOD!!!!
Has anyone tried the cafe next door though? Well dont bother ive tried it 3 times now and had to throw them away each time. The salad was soggy and the meat tasted off wont go back again. Its called O'YES but think it should be called O'NO its that bad.
hagardriley 12-08-2006, 00:14 Seashells Coffee shop at the Woodseats end of Abbey Lane is brilliant, as is Mr Bs across from Lavers on London Road and the sarny shop at the top of Meadowhead on the left by the subway (going out of town).
murnanas in hillsborough is sweet.try the hunters special.its a bit hard to find but its well worth it
finley98 13-11-2008, 09:14 :):)Woodys at Hunters bar roundabout is by far the best sandwich shop in sheffield.....the reasons.....VALUE FOR MONEY......BEST CHOICE.....FRIENDLY STAFF.....and you can still get a hot sandwich at 4 o`clock when all the others are closed......anyone who likes a good breakfast sarnie should try there FULL MONTY with cumberland sausage, quality bacon, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes and black pudding on a large breadcake at £2.75 not the catering sausage that nearly every other sandwich shop gives you.If you have got a bank loan then stick with Roneys,Seans,Thickets all ok as butchers go...but Roneys for one uses the same supplier as Woodys for Bacon.....and you cannot get the fantastic range....try the MAMBO ITALIANO with parma ham, fresh mozzarella, pesto, rocket and vine tomatoes or the WOODYS CLASSIC with roast chicken, bacon, mature cheddar, mayo & iceberg lettuce or the fantastic BIG BOY with roast turkey, honey roast ham, bacon, cheddar, tomatoes & iceberg lettuce and for VEGGIES try there daily meditteranean veg with mixed peppers, corgettes, red onion, vine toms, topped with choice of cheese on a hot baguette....unbeatable....you may think why should I be bothered to go into such detail....because ive been a chef in one of Sheffields busiest restaurants for the past 6 years and I make it my job to see who is the best........WOODYS SANDWICH BAR 10/10
mum of 3 13-11-2008, 15:32 Are you sure you are not thinking of Taste on Ecclesall Road?

the best one is rustlings sandwich bar just opposite Endcliffe Park (top entrance)

sumayyah 13-11-2008, 21:45 johannes 930 eccesall road. LOVE the chicken brie and cranberry
they have a huge range of sarnies, hot and cold
Frank Sidney 13-11-2008, 21:45 Ellesmere Bakery (Burngreave?) is lovely. Really nice fillings (and lots of it) and they bake their own bread. Lovely

As I was saying to Nick ans Sean the last time that I was in ----------:hihi:
Feast down Chapel walk is my favourite.
Worst is Woodys or any subway. In fact I hope all subways get closed down by environmental health.
Caroline13 22-09-2009, 13:46 Best sarnie shop I've ever known is C Thomas on Staniforth Road in Darnall (regulars know it as 'Nigels') -went almost every weekday for 4 years when I worked 10 min away, and seriously miss it now I work in Chesterfield (that wouldn't know a proper buttie shop if it fell over one!)
Looks a bit rundown from the outside (unfortunately, what doesn't look that way in Darnall), but fantastically made classic, simple sandwiches and snacks. Most importantly the banter is first class - as I've said in a review somewhere online, you know you're a regular when Nigel starts picking on you!
I think they're 687 Staniforth Road looking at Yell.com, tel: 0114 249 2287. He does delivery if ordered before 11 and over £10. His hot pork & turkey with all the trimmings are spoken of in awe, yummy!!! :-)
Woodys is best by far. I moved from Ecclesall Road to Hillsborough recently and the thing I miss most is Woodys!
Their chicken, bacon, mayo, cheese and lettuce on ciabatta is awesome! :D

Not a chance. Woodys is terrible - I once had to wait about 40 minutes for a pannini - "it'll just be two minutes, sorry it's taking so long..." Never again! Taste next door door does a cracking roast pork sarnie, as does Roneys, so no need to visit Woodys!
S6 D.I.Y 22-09-2009, 14:12 Roneys is the best ive eaten and ive eaten a few thousands
I can't remember if it's Mr or Mrs B's on chesterfield road approximatly opposite Arnold laver but the bacon and egg buttie and mug of tea i had there last year was heaven (compared to the garbage you get on this rock)
DeViL_WoMaN 22-09-2009, 16:14 Stainforths on Chapel Walk FTW!
I love their ham salad sarnies and their cakes are to die for!
aussiegirl 22-09-2009, 19:44 I'm with tim_rutter, lunch stop on West St rules!!! They're very good if you're picky (as I am!)
They make excellent breakfast sandwhiches with real snags. Also what about the sarnie shop on Trippett Lane - used to be good.
leffelou 22-09-2009, 20:38 Getting a good sandwich or full english breakfast seems impossible.
It would have to be Crawshaws in Hillsborough, near Morrisons, they cook there own home made sausages to order, so you have to wait for a little while, but if your like me it doesn't matter as long as it is proper sausuage!! Also all other sarnies are very nice as well.
Bacon, Brie & Cranberry @ Spoilt for Choice.
If it's good enough for Vaughny it's good enough for me.
282 Sandwich Bar on Ecclesall Road (Opposite Champs) do fantastic paninis and their bagettes are spot on!
Neutral body 23-09-2009, 09:06 Agree with buttylicious, they are very good, I would NEVER eat anything from Greggs after working in their bakery for 5 weeks. The best food there was what got thrown in the skip for pig swill. The rest was not fit even for that.
Snax shack in hackenthorpe is quite tasty :D
iansheff 23-09-2009, 12:04 I always liked Cooplands sandwiches.
Captain_Scarlet 23-09-2009, 13:35 Best sandwich shop franchise in Sheff IMO would have to be Greggs. You have without a doubt no taste whatsoever.
Philip Irons 23-09-2009, 19:36 try subway or beres
Neutral body 24-09-2009, 09:56 try subway or beres
Agree with Beres, but subway? why do they have to call sandwiches subs? A sandwich is a sandwich not a sub.
If they cant even realise what they are selling I will not use them.
cheeseman 24-09-2009, 10:28 I agree that woody's on ecci road does awesome bacon sarnie's, its all about the bread, in city centre, try qc's bagel bar on the lane in between all bar one and orchard square
deanandbecky 24-09-2009, 10:29 no they are all crap, they are rubbish

AllAboutMe 19-12-2009, 19:47 Does anyone remember Deli on the Wicker...years ago when the two guys owned it...there sandwiches were amazing. Cajun chicken & lime dressing and cheese and coleslaw...yum yum...didnt do much for my waistline but gorgeous sandwiches:love:
Personally, I can't see what's wrong with a couple of slices of Spam on sliced white bread with a touch of margarine, kept in the fridge overnight, then wrapped in tin foil so that it goes soggy, and served with a cup of luke-warm tea from a Thermos and a slightly soft Rich Tea or two. Perfect, followed by a Rennie or two. To make it perfect, you could always have a slice of slightly stale chocolalate Swiss Roll, which has never been nearer to Switzerland than Grimsby, with yellowing artificial cream and jam containing at least 1.3% fruit. Luvverly!
muchtoofair 19-12-2009, 21:51 I'd never slag off any one private sarni shop on a public forum even though I'm actually frothing at the mouth and chomping at the bit to do so.
I grab a sandwhich around Sheffield at least once every three or four days and have done for the last twenty years. Some are sadly, simply pathetic.
Setting aside matters of personal taste and taking into account price points and costing,I still fail to understand why so many places employ people that simply can't cook or follow even the most basic of instructions.
How a simple request for a "runny egg" can result in someone serving up a circular lump of yellow chalky powder surrounded by a blackened egg "white" makes me seriously doubt my integrity when I consider that I haven't,to date, actually let off a dirty nuclear device in any of these places or smashed someones skull to smithereens with a bottle of brown sauce.:help:
That's where you're going wrong. A swift thermo-nuclear blast can only help, particularly in regard to egg-yolk.
muchtoofair 19-12-2009, 22:36 That's where you're going wrong. A swift thermo-nuclear blast can only help, particularly in regard to egg-yolk.
:hihi:
Dammit.I'll buy myself a chemistry set for Christmas and see how I get on.
Or maybe I'll carry one of those rubber fried eggs around with me,they can stick it next to the frying pan as a sort of template/example.:hihi:
KoalaFamily 20-12-2009, 07:09 Woodys is best by far. I moved from Ecclesall Road to Hillsborough recently and the thing I miss most is Woodys!
Their chicken, bacon, mayo, cheese and lettuce on ciabatta is awesome! :D
Have a walk to Lilys on Penistone Rd. Bake everything. Only use the best ingredients. I'm sure they will make any sandwich if it's not already on their board. Enjoy!!
remyrobson 20-12-2009, 12:13 Try Lunch Station on Glossop Road, near the hallamshire hospital, very yummy and prepared by a proper chef :)

Just seen what you mean, but no, there were there then too! I've worked there for almost 4 years and they've been there all that time...
But there is havn't you tried Piccolo on London road ?Their sandwiches are amazing ,always freshly made on the spot .Their bacon sandwiches are the best I have ever tasted, no lumps of yukky fat or rind.If you really want to push the boat out go for their Palermo sandwich divine!!!
Give them a go ,its across from the Chinese fireworks so not far to walk if you work at the bottom of the moor.
Happy Eating.
Ms Macbeth 30-01-2010, 11:12 Sounds like you need to apply for a job on Campo Lane - Urban Deli and Philpotts don't serve up nasty cheap sausage!
Not been to Philpotts, but I love Urban Deli. As well as their sarnies, their soups are to die for!
the worrying thing is the number of bad sandwich shops around. all it compounds is the lazy scum never cook or eat healthy, just depend on filth from very very low budget out lets. it was puzzleing me about how many takeaways or springing up on a daily basis in sheffield. once again if they could be bothered to cook. some of you out there will eat any old crap.:hihi::hihi:
There is one sandwich shop that always comes out on top in my opinion and that is the Figtree Sandwich Bar in the city centre. It is amazing, honestly.
The food is all excellent value and they all well below their competitors in terms of price but they're so far above them in terms of quality.
I use this sandwich bar every day and I can truely say I've never experienced any problems with anything. The staff are extremely friendly and the shop just generally has a really welcoming atmosphere.

Urban Deli and Philpotts are nothing compared to the Figtree which is just down Figtree Lane. I used Urban Deli every day and used to spend a fortune each week on my lunches and then I tried Figtree and not only is it literally half the price of Urban Deli, the quality is so much better!
chipmonk86 07-03-2010, 15:06 crawshaws do the best sandwiches eva, espesh the hot roast pork with all the trimmngs

We have opened a new sandwich shop on Holme Lane Hillsborough called Nifty's (opposite the builders centre) We have been told our full English at £3.75 is fantastic value for a decent breakfast!! Also great sarni's at good prices and we make our own chips!!!!!
Kthebean 09-03-2010, 17:32 Figtree is ok and the sandwiches are tasty but the hot food takes ages to be made, and the women who work there are a bit scowly.
good news heard the new building behind the wednesday ground on catch bar lane is going to be a cafe/ sandwhich shop. the building looks very impressive and so i would have thought the sandwhiches would be pretty good too when they open.
melthebell 09-05-2010, 21:23 Figtree is ok and the sandwiches are tasty but the hot food takes ages to be made, and the women who work there are a bit scowly.

Best avoiding the school rushes though. Very good, family run business.
Good quality ham, bacon, etc.
Love them.
Bald Eagle 27-04-2011, 18:22 I worked in the laboratory at Sanderson Brothers and Newbould in 1963 as a 16 year old and, as the gopher, fetched the morning sandwiches from a shop just around the corner. Sorry but after all these years I cannot remember the road names! What I do remember though is that most of the sandwiches were for dripping with brown in and well salted. Never heard of cholesterol or salt being bad for you then!!!!
BE

I was in Firth Park the other day and had a beef, roast potato and onion gravy sandwich from that new shop that used to be the old butchers near the hardware shop, I think its called Sharon's.
It was the sexiest thing I have ever put in my mouth, I'll be back there for another the next time I'm down that way.

Try 'The Sportsman Inn' on Redmires Road, Lodge Moor, just before you get to 'The Three Merry Lads'. Home made meat and potato pie with hendersons relish. Would highly recommend !
I generally only go to Grace & Flavour down the back of All Bar One, or for a one-a-week treat to the mexican place for a burrito opposite Specsavers on Pinstone street. Yum!

Pure-Enough 27-09-2011, 13:15 Has to be SnapDeli for me at Banner Cross. Yummy
Joel
The one on Nether lane junction has gone now I think. Theres still Harrods next to Chinese at corner of Common/Green Lane
fruitisbad 27-09-2011, 13:55 scotts pantry by sheffield uni is also pretty good
HTM_1983 27-09-2011, 14:52 Wow think i should have a read through all 10 pages to find some good sandwich shops, for me Charleys Pantry on Wostenholm Road (just off Sharrow Lane) does nice sanwiches which they make to order and include the breakfast foods (bacon/sausage etc) as well as cold sandwiches.
I also like The Pastry Company - think thats wht its called - opposite the Peace Gardens next to the Co-Op. They also make sandwiches to order so they are fresh
There is another one near the Arundel Building of Sheffield Hallam - heading towards the hubs but I cant remember what its called - again they have a good choice of hot and cold sandwich fillings

Possibly not but if you want a simple well made sandwich, I love a BLT and Brunch and Lunch near Plug on the Moor do a great BLT. When I worked at Redvers they'd be my fortnightly treat.

Yog Sothoth 31-12-2011, 12:31 Masterchef near the traffic lights in Attercliffe are excellent, and cheap too. Just around the corner from Robin Hood's Bay Chippy.
Norseman 31-12-2011, 21:17 Scott's pantry is good on Glossop Road though the prices have really gone up over the past year. Used to use them quite a bit when I worked up that way be it for sarni's, salads or an occasional bacon and egg hottie.
Good choice and friendly staff too
Yorkiescot 02-01-2012, 17:29 The best sandwich shop in Sheffield is Munchies on Shoreham Street.
