View Full Version : Don't believe it - cat dead!
Beanfeast 05-05-2009, 13:21 Can't believe it, yesterday we had one 8yr old happy cat running around, playing, eating, sitting in our laps and generally wanting as much attention as ever.... today she's dead. :(
My OH got up at 3am this morning and went down to the kitchen to get some water, to find our cat lying on the kitchen floor no longer moving but there wasn't a mark on her. After getting me up we couldn't get back to sleep and ended up wrapping her in a blanket and putting her in a box before cleaning all the floors just in case it might have a health impact on our little 'un crawling around.
We've now dropped her off at the vets, they couldn't see anything wrong either and we decided against getting involved in post-mortems and everything. We just can't understand what could have happen though, it's so sad.
That's now 2 cats and a dog 'taken from us' in the past year or so that we've had for years. None of them really got to the end of their natural lives, the last 2 died from liver failure and a tumour. And it just feels so weird to be 'petless' again. My OH is suggesting we get another cat or 2 soon and I'd like that too, I just don't know how to trust they'll be around for long anymore... in the meantime the house is just too quiet. :(
BananaSplit 05-05-2009, 13:36 Oh my word, my heart totally goes out to you. I am so very sorry for your loss.
Pets play such a big part in our lives and you've clearly given 3 of them a wonderful home over their short lives.
8 short years in a warm, safe, fun loving home is something your cat will have loved.
X x
whitebull 05-05-2009, 13:39 That's awful! I wonder if she somehow got poisoned or something. Even then I don't know if she'd die overnight without any signs beforehand though.
Poor you, it must have been a horrible shock.

That's terrible. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling right now.
:(
Beanfeast 05-05-2009, 13:53 Thanks for your thoughts, still just quite numb I guess. I just really badly want to know what happened and at least know she didn't suffer for long. Our previous cat and dog were put down by the vets so we had a little warning and time to say goodbye, this just seems bizarre though.
*Peaches* 05-05-2009, 13:54 sorry for your loss, RIP kitty x
That's a horrible story. What a shock for you!
I hope things get better.
Poor puddy! :(
How awful for you to lose her in such a way :( What a terrible shock...
Was she allowed outside at all? Could she have picked something up from outside although, as someone else said it must have taken effect very quickly.
I'm so sorry for your loss, what a terrible shock :(
So sorry to hear about your cat. What a shock for you.
My mum recently lost her cat (road accident) and she's just got a cat from the RSPCA. The new cat is fully grown and very grateful for a home, she was a stray before.
I know it might be too soon to think of replacing your cat but please keep the RSPCA in mind if you so.
Beanfeast 05-05-2009, 15:28 Yeah we'd definitely rehome if we were to get another, all our pets have been rehomed by us previously. Either from the RSPCA or from the Cats Protection League.
She was allowed out so yes she could have eaten anything. She was always bringing mice and an occasional bird into the house too - often alive! We also discovered last night that we may well have a mouse in our living room at the moment, only heard it because we were sitting there quietly with a cuppa whilst thinking how she could have died. Can't decide wether to be depressed because it was obviously our cat who brought the mouse in or find it strangely amusing and significant as her final act to make sure we have a good reminder of her! :)
EdnaKrabappe 05-05-2009, 17:51 :( Big hugs re this, as you say a proper shock.
Carebear134 05-05-2009, 18:15 Brought a tear to my eye, cos its been a year that I lost my beautiful cat who was taken from us so suddenly. My heart goes out to you but I am sure she's playing over the rainbowbridge having the best time in the world xxxxx
Snagglepuss 06-05-2009, 14:40 Such a horrible shock for you. Sending my heartfelt sypathies to you at this tragic time. xx
holmzey92 06-05-2009, 14:51 R.I.P :( x x x x x
sorry for your loss...sounds to me like a happy if not short life.
I've had two cats just suddenly die, one of whom was only 3 years old and the other was 8 but had been to the vets for a full check up 2 days before she died.
It is a terrible shock, but in another way it's the best way to go. They had quality of life, right up until the moment that they went and had both had lovely days of playing, snuggling and being normal. Sophie (the cat who was 8 ) had had a lovely day, went to sleep in her bed underneath the dining table and just stopped breathing. I'd hugged her and everything had been completely normal 2 hours before I found her dead.
It's a conundrum- neither of these cats ever had an explanation for why they suddenly keeled over (no signs of being hit by cars, poisoning or anything obvious at all to me or the vet) but although it would in some ways it would make it easier to cope with if you knew about a health problem, it's just as hard losing them really, and if you've seen them be hit by a car or go downhill with a health problem then that is in itself a hard thing to deal with.
I hope that you very soon get to the position of being able to think about her without feeling sad Beanfeast.
If it's any consolation to you, as you grieve for her, knowing that she didn't have time to suffer becomes a comfort once the shock has faded a little.
Thinking of you.

bless ya so sorry for your loss x x
I'm sorry to hear this.
We had a lovely cat (and i'm not really a 'cat person') when I was young, she suddenly became very weak and immobile, pretty much overnight and died the next day. She was only 7
