Recently i've been looking at my life and tried
to figure out what was holding me back. Since i've
been using computers since forever I became controlled
by them. So, after 25 years i decided it was time to
put an end to this dependancy. I've got rid of
all the antisocial devices that imprisoned me and started
to socialize more. I stand out considerably because
i tend to introduce myself and pick rather random subjects
of discusion, but you gotta start somewhere right?

Anyway, i've joined a few groups, and I'm going to do some
language classes in August. I was wondering if there was
other places in Sheffield that have interesting groups for
social misfits trying to 'find' themselves? Or to revert
some form of assimilated humanity.

It's so crappy being on your own, which rules out day
trips, traveling or shopping. Shame there is no concept
of travel buddy or shopping buddy.

Everyone will probably say go drinking to a pub. Er..
no thanks, tried that, it only makes sense if you like
getting drunk and have lots of people to go with that
you are really good mates with already.

I've just got to remember to stay positive.

It's really refreshing to read what you said ! I never did [or do] understand modern technology so I sympathise and envy , in some ways , someone who was brought up on it , so to speak.
I always think a good group to try for , if you want to make real-life , interesting new friends , are local amateur theatrical groups. They are usually friendly people and acting cannot only be great fun , it can also boost your confidence when you mix with people in general.
There are probably Writers Groups in Sheffield if drama is not your scene , and failing that , I'm sure if you pop in one of the libraries , they'll have a list of clubs and activities.
Incidentally , in going , "the other direction " , from you , I came across a snag. I was teaching in Turkey in 1999 and we teachers were all asked to go on a Computer course in the Summer holidays. We'd just started and at last a glimmer of understanding was just beginning to filter through to my techno-dead brain , when that massive earthquake happened and the course was abandoned . Somehow I don't think Fate ever intended me to understand technology !

i do understand where you are coming from but i use computers a hell of a lot and still i have an active social life. Theres time when this thing just comes in handy too often.

I do remember when my internet was cut off for like two weeks. I did much more productive things with my time. I actually read whole books in a matter of days! I think there can easily be a balence though.

Yes, stay positive - there's never a reason not to relax, and to seek out new horizons you must first loose sight of the shore etc. Everybody gets lows from time to time whatever - they do pass! Good for you for being so self aware and wanting to improve and recreate yourself. As you start feeling better, you'll gain in confidence and then you're likely to meet and attract others...

Have you heard of the WEA - Workers Education Association. They run easy going courses all over Sheffield in the day and evenings. Each is usually 10 weeks in length and start every January , April and Sept. They're either free or £35/40 ,and the subjects are really wide ranging. There's all the standard stuff, plus the likes of philosophy, morris dancing jazz appreciation, local history, mushrooms and toadstools!, egyption carry-ons, and sugarcraft!!!

I wish I could do a linky thing for you ( I'm exceptional at turning the pages of a book!!) Google the keywords I guess....soz
