I've read that if I plant nasturtiums amongst my broad beans, the blackfly will all go for them and hopefully leave my beans alone. Doesn't this just mean that the blackfly are encouraged to come near my beans, and will get fat and multiply horribly near all my veg?

Does anyone use companion planting? Is it successful, and what have you planted this way?

No apparently it deters them away from the beans but i think you also need to pinch out the tips. You could use herbs that the dont like the smell of to prevent them coming near them at all but I cant remember which ones.
I have also seen people using nicotine spray.

Apparently slugs and snails also prefer rotten leaves to fresh ones so a border of rotten leaves may protect your plants from the slimey beggars.
