The South Yorkshire branch of the probation union, Napo, says it fears work with offenders undertaken by police in conjunction with their local probation and prison services will be lost if the Government presses ahead with wide-ranging reforms to the probation service.
The latest figures published on March 31 2004 showed there were 682 registered sex offenders living in South Yorkshire.
Of those 29 were considered 'high risk' and were monitored by Mappas.
