I've been drinking Actimel for about a month now, and I don't feel like that mad woman in the advert. I don't feel any different at all actually.

Is it me ?

Anyone else drinking this stuff ?

we have it sometimes, doesn't make me feel any different either.

So i've changed to the flora proactive one, which should help lower bad cholesterol levels.

I drink Yakult regularly and find that it definitely reduces flatulence and 'bloatiness'.

Suckers.. They are a complete con. Very very very very expensive yoghurt!

The proactive one (and the benecol one) says "clinically proven to reduce cholesterol" on it, so it must have been, they can't just print that.

I drink the Danone Actimel one though I'm not sure whether it has much effect (the jury's still out). I grew up in Japan, where Yakult is practically part of one's daily routine.

Nick, I can still remember when you described them as little pots that taste like "vomit"! Have you changed your mind?

No, but I have found a way of throwing it down my throat without tasting it :)

If you watch the ads carefully, they don't say they'll do anything. All the strapline says is 'will you feel the difference?' or something like that..........

I read/saw something the other day that said (from the company, official quote lol) along the lines of.........if you're constipated then this MIGHT help to sort you.

If you're not, then it won't make the slightest difference. Why would it? heheh

Yakult is quite tasty I think - I can imagine lining them up on the kitchen counter and downing them like shots of tequila! What do you think would happen if you drank say twelve in rapid succession? Would they act as a laxative?

edit
Yakult in particular can make a big difference to your digestive system and it really helps those who suffer from IBS.

mixed news on the pro active front (having done a little research).

What about Flora Proactive and Benecol?

Plant sterols/stanols have been added to margarine spreads yoghurt and milk products such as Flora Proactive and Benecol. The British Heart Foundation does not endorse any specific products, although there is evidence that they can help to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

However effective plant sterols and stanols are proven to be, it is important to adopt a diet that is low in saturated fats with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and have at least two portions of fish a week, one portion being oily, to stop smoking and to keep physically active. Making these lifestyle changes can help prevent coronary heart disease.

but (not quoting, can't be bothered) the manufacturer was fined by the ASA for not having substantiated it's claims regarding the cholesterol reducing effects. The quote is from British Heart Foundation website (no reason for them to promote ineffective products).

lol so if you don't suffer from IBS then you're erm wasting your money on a perfectly pleasant but overpriced yogurt-based 100mls???

I think the key phrase here is "well-being". I don't think Yakult, Benecol, Actimel delivers measurable physiological results. However, from speaking with friends and family members who regularly drink pro-biotic drinks I have found that they are less prone to digestive ailments (ie. constipation, flatulence, stomach cramps). In essence they have a better sense of well-being.

Maybe they work and maybe they don't but for someone who rarely takes the time to sit down and eat a yoghurt, 5 secs spent throwing it down my neck is worth it for a few pence a day.

My feeling is that your stomach acid and various other digestive enzymes would kill the majority of 'freindly' bacteria before they get to the intestines.

I personally think that you would be as well off just having a few spoonfuls of cheap natural live yoghurt instead.

Isn't there a money back guarantee on one of these?

Nick 2, in the absence of Strix I feel it my duty to inform you that this topic has been covered here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40228&highlight=probiotic)

I can't even look at that Yakult as I have a 'thing' about milk that's not fresh. :gag:

I can imagine taht such a thing would work if you do have a stomach problem, but whether it works for anything else I remain unconvinced and reckon it might have a placebo effect. Couldn't you get much the same effect from getting plenty of fruit and veg and drinking lots of water every day?
