View Full Version : VW R reg Polo which cuts out within 5 mins of starting
VW R reg Polo
My son's car cuts out within 5 mins of starting up, then runs OK
Do any of you forum mechanics know why this happens?
? auto choke
can any one give advice on how to repair this as he has just passed his test and finds it rather off putting
Hazel
um isn't there something with autochokes about pressing the pedal once to release it?
Not that I know anything!!!! (trust me, that's not false modesty :( )
Thanks for your reply Shsheff
The car came without any manual.
So any advice will be of help.

Could be the carburretor, may need cleaning or tuning.
Or maybe spark plugs, any service history?
i would recommend an oil and filter service inc. sparkplugs.
It won't be too costly on a VW Polo.

A Carburretor on a R reg Car? I hope that is a joke, if not why on earth do people buy VW's :loopy:
metalman 05-07-2005, 13:21 We had this start to happen on our Polo some years ago, and I think it was supposed to be some sort of gasket problem in the engine, so it's probably going to be quite expensive to fix. We traded ours in for a different car though at that point.
That's the problem with "modern cars" (i know it's an "r" reg but it's fairly modern) the trouble could be any number of things,if it's not the obvious, plugs, fuel ect it will need hooking up to a diagnostic machine to trace the fault.
Get a classic car:D my Spitfire doesn't go at the moment, but at least i know whats wrong with it,and i can fix it myself:)

I agree, get it hooked up to the diagnostics computer. Many garages will do this for nowt if they think you'll ask them to fix it for you, so at least you'll know. It's sometimes due to the sensors in/around the emissions control system that operate in a dodgy way when cold.
I drive a D reg Polo - no such worries - although I have now got a nice shiny electronic ignition instead of the points ignition it was supposed to have. The march of technology eh? ;)
Have a good trawl around the Web. There are all sorts of nerdy bods out there who discuss things like this. I successfully sorted my non-boosting Passat TDi by sticking a few choice words into Google, then buying the requiseite part and fitting it. I think the part number was even quoted.
Sounds to me like an engine management issue...
Could be quite costly.
I know someone with a P-Reg Polo that had a similar problem

Engine management issues can be costly from main dealers, because they can suck through their teeth and tell you anything. For instance, the behaviour of a vehicle with a faulty Lambda sensor (in the catalytic convertor) could be any number of things, from fuel starvation, juddering, stalling, coughing, etc. The root cause could be a £25 part and half an hour under the car ...
edit: I know this because I had one :)
