So I was just looking on the forum when I noticed that there are apparently 77000 registered members of the forum. Now, I presume that the vast majority of these member live in Sheffield, bar a few expats and people who lived they wished here. And Sheffield has a population of about 530000 (thanks wiki) which means that about 1 in 8 sheffield people are sheffield forum members. which is pretty cool.
Anyway, I had a quick look on google for a few forums for other cities, like leeds, manchester, birmingham...and although they have forums they dont seem to have anywhere near the amount of members sheffield has - you are looking at around 1000 as opposed to our mighty 77000. So is this just a sheffield thing? Are we still the country's biggest village, but we all meet on here nowadays instead?
what do you reckon?

I'm originally from the West Midlands - near Solihull. Since I've been visiting and living in Sheffield I've noticed how friendly it is compared with most other places in the UK. I think you're right - Sheffield is a big village! It's got a great sense of community.

Just look at Leeds Forum, 'bout as lively as a graveyard. I think Sheffield forum is an exeption, despite other forums being available in Sheffield.

leeds forum (if it's the one I think it is) is badly run

a bunch of us hiked over there during an SF outage one night and carried on as usual, but they had a post count competition on at the time

needless to say they deleted about fifty of my posts... and one of their regulars got the prize

oh, and a bunch of us got banned, thanks to Deavon suggesting we all go over there and 'do them in' - which if you know Deavon was hilarious. He's as soft as his 'george' avatar, and how the heck you 'do in' anybody on a forum is beyond me. I sent admin an email and they lifted the ban, but boy had they no idea what running a forum was about

I think what you have to take into consideration is the amount of people with more than one account, I've seen it happen many a time....People who allready have an account and for what ever reason decide to create another for whatever reason, not that I will ever understand it, but It would be interesting to see how many of these users are actually still regularly active.

But....I'm not gonna take it away from SF and sheffielders because this forum has been active and growing for many a year and is renouned as a massive forum, you only have to look at how many people are online at particular times, plus if it was'nt for SF and the people on here and the stories people bring, the Sheffield Star would'nt have as many stories lol, because well all know they use SF to find news!
