View Full Version : Any Ideas to help me solve a parking problem?

We live on a fairly congested road, there are days when the residents have trouble parking on the road.
This is mainly down to a local garage parking all of the cars they are working on down the road. Most of the houses are terraced and have no drives, but we do and it was the main reason that we bought our house for the convenience of having two of our own parking spaces.
There are times when some of the less considerate drivers park thier cars hung over our drive blocking it in completley at times.
Yesterday I went out to a woman who had left her big fat van hung so far over our drive no one could get in our out
The numpty upperty so and so informed me that the van was even with the edge of the wall and that she would be leaving it where it was.. grr it quite clearly was not even with the wall and was hung over the curb drop by a good foot and a half.
Anyway after one driver got himself well and truly wedged in between our drive and the van, the garage up the road came and moved it as it had been left with them for a M.O.T.
Allthough I had to ring them to come and move it or it would still be there now, I will soon be having a keepclear marking placed on the road by the councill at my own expense to try and solve the problem.
What can I do to get a car removed from my drive if it's causing an obstuction after the markings are down?

Invest in a trolly jack and shift the cars ;)

LOL we have thought about this... but knowing my luck I would end up getting in hot water for tampering with someones car.
We also thought about bouncing one out of the way the other day but there was nowhere it bounce it to. twas only a mini (a very badly parked mini)

A friend of ours who had a landrover used to 'remove' obstructions from his driveway on a regular basis. He used to just leave them in the middle of the road. :D
It's them who'll get the ticket and phonecall from the police :hihi:

i normally put a note on the car, but it's generally blocking me out not in. I haven't caught one doing it twice after a note.

You might try speaking to the council about the garage, or speaking to the garage owner and making clear that they shouldn't block your drive.

Failing that, go with the trolley jack, I doubt you can be prosecuted for removing an obstruction that's blocking your right of access.

Yes the note, if left in bright red lipstick across the windscreen (preferably on a sunny day when it has time to dry and stick) works particularly well!

Failing that, accidentally letting the front two tyres down. They can get away, but won't get far!

I sympathise honeyplanet as we are in a similar situation. I'd be interested to know which department and if poss a telephone no at the council that deals with these markings. We already have the marking - H sign? - but it was here before we moved in 10+ years ago and is now a little faded. ( may be one reason why no-one takes the blindest bit of notice of it :( ) so would like it repainted. Perhaps I could just get a tin of white paint :heyhey:

AFAIK - if a vehicle is blocking access to your property / causing an obstruction then it is a police matter although a low priority one, if its general traffic problems then that's now down to the council wardens.

Good Luck, I'm off to find a trolly jack. :D

We had a similar thing happen to us a few years ago so all of our road signed a petition and sent it to the council. Within weeks, a yellow line was put down around the garage entrance and the council were told that their customers should under no circumstances park in the road. This seemed to do the job and we have had no problems since.

Lotti, are you advocating anarchy?!:o Taking the law into your own hands?:o

Well, well, well.

I joke ofcause because you're right. Plaster their windscreen in lipstick:

"You parked across my driveway you numpty"

in reverse ofcause.

What perticular dept dealt with the petition? I ask because I am considering penning a letter about it all myself.
Today its beyond a joke they are even repairing them on the street double parking ect... and I spend most of my day on 'drive watch' because now people have took to parking in my spaces if they cant get on the road

How about putting a sign up for the inconsiderate drivers to see ... something like:

PLEASE DO NOT PARK HERE.
(your tyres will be deflated).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

But would you want to wake up in the morning to find your own tires have been deflated? Don't forget, they Know Where You Live :)

That's assuming 'they' know which car is mine ...

Personally, I think the vast majority of people would not leave their car unattended across someone's drive where there is such a sign.

the one on your drive presumably once they've shifted their car. Not rocket science.

You're assuming I've left my car on my drive?

And you're also assuming I don't my car locked away in my garage?

since we are talking about a driveway being blocked, it would be pretty silly to make a fuss about it and then park on the street (especially as we have established that the street parking is limited), and there was no mention of a garage. you can't go changing the rules once the games started.

Parking on the street seeming silly (to you), is not the issue here. You assumed that it would not happen. Likewise, you assumed there was no garage, simply because there was no mention of one.

I am merely pointing out your assumtions, re: the parameters of this (hypothetical) situation we're discussing.

I am not changing the rules after the game (what game!?) has started. I am ONLY pointing out your assumptions, and that is ALL I am doing. I am ignoring your attempts to engage me in your 'game', thank you very much. :)

too late, you are already engaged.
Are you saying that having your drive blocked, making a fuss about getting a car moved (even letting it's tyres down) and then parking on the street instead of using your drive is not silly?

Since you wouldn't know when they intended to get revenge you would have to never use your driveway again, which makes the whole parking on it issue rather mute.
If it were a garage that were being blocked, most people would say so, rather than saying drive. So the assumption is not unwarranted.

I was trying to make the point, that if you let someones tyres down, assuming that you intend to ever use your drive again, it's entirely likely that should they wish they will exact revenge in a similar fashion.

Thought

Where can yo get A4 adhesive labels from print the message onto it and stick it across the drivers side. They will soon get the message as they cannot drive off until they have removed it from the window unless they have a scrapper.

Yes I had thought about somthing like that.. but I am quite shy and would spend the rest of the day worrying incase I had damaged the car and some angry bloke would come banging at my door, demanding that I remove it. allthough if I get brave enough I may resort to this.

No need for "self adhesive", apparently if you "Pritt stick" a note on using normal paper it's really difficult to get off...

...not that I'd ever condone such behaviour of course, you understand.

Obviously it's plain silly to go around making enemies (where there is no need to do so).

If you let peoples' tyres down (or take any mildly agressive action), then you'd be a fool not to expect some 'come back', and even more of a fool not to be prepared for 'come back'.

These kind of conflicts require slow escalataion of action. First you talk to the person and communicate your distress in a calm way, then (assuming this stage hasn't resolved the problem) you escalate to the next stage (perhaps approach the council), etc.

*IF* you get to the stage of putting a sign at the entrance to your propery, warning of 'FREE TYRE DEFLATION SERVICE', then things have gotten out of hand, and you've not handled the previous stages properly.

But let's say it does come to this ...

Generally speaking, you don't want to leave yourself (or your property) open to attack. You take ANY precations you need to, so as to pre-empt / neutralise any aggressive action by any peeved-off-parties.

But in the extreme cases of 'TYRE DEFLATION WARFARE' ...

Yeah! I'd probably just leave my car on my drive (assuming I have no garage) and risk someone sneaking on to my drive and letting my tyres down (how terrible!).

Yes, it is valid to put up a sign. This would put most people off, and for those it doesn't, down with their tyres!

Sometimes you have to draw the line in the sand and make a stand.

Personally I'd go for pieces of paper saying 'please don't park here again'. Either that, or I'd let Jamie camp outside my front door with his Rotweiller face on :D

you can put security lights and tripwires on your own drive though, and carelessly place rakes with the tines pointing up.

and keep a cigarette lighter powered pump in your boot (i already do this).

Seriously........after our (undesirable) car got broken into several times I invested in cctv camera. It's never happened since........

I figure that all 'they' need is a bit of persuasion to go elsewhere.....

Seriously, it is really annoying if someone blocks you in like this, but remember to keep a cool head about it. If you cannot get out and can speak to the person who's blocking your drive, then do so. They will most likely be very apologetic. If they are then rude to you, then you call the police about it. Don't threaten them as they can do something back, and if they were nasty when you spoke to them then they are perfectly capable of doing something much worse to you.

So they might let your tyres down, that's not necessarily a problem to you, but what if they stick a knife in each one? At £80 a boot, that's a fair price to pay.

if anyone parks actually in your drive then you could avoid this simply by getting a gate.

Sounds like the real problem here though is the repair garage - so get on to the council!
