View Full Version : Secondhand or New, Do You Use Oxfam and the Like?
BoppinBruce 05-07-2005, 07:01 I have noticed, mainly because I use them, a few, and I mean quite a few, chairity shops in Crookes and Broomhill.
Many of them appear to be selling new stuff, sometimes it 'appears' to be designer stuff, mostly new, at a very resonable price.
I am XL, I know i ought to loose weight and believe me I am trying, and I notice that much of the men's clothing are in size XL or above. Alright for me, I have a wardrobe full of Tommy, JCB, Polo, CK and similar.
So, do you buy from charity shops? What do you buy if you do? Are these designer labels genuine? And which is the best charity shop in Sheffield?
Over to you...........
Best bargain I've got recently is a really comfortable armchair in very good condition which cost me £5 from Oxfam in Broomhill...
my bro-in-law always trawls the charity shops when he visits. He teaches English to young children in Thailand and finds loads of games that he can use for educational purposes.
i always buy all my books from charity shops :)
I always have a quick look at the clothes in charity shops, you never know what you might find, jeans are better second hand, as someone has done all the wearing-in for you.
Charity shops are also a lot cheaper than rip-off merchants like Freshmans.
St Lukes shop on Abbeydale Road is good for clothes.
I always donate to oxfam, anything from old clothes to kids toys, books, mags ive donated loads of stuff....
and i do shop there too......
i sometimes buy clothes in oxfam and barnadoes good value for money even if it is second hand clothes.

So does my wife....but not from Oxfam, - £2.50/£3.00 for a second-hand paperback!! They're generally 40p, 60p, or a pound in St.Lukes and Help the Aged etc. When she's read them they're given back to the charity shops.
Hmmm....I'm XL [because of my build rather then over-indulgence :) ], and generally shop in Primark for my designer label stuff :D, so I might have a closer look at these charity shops
WallBuilder 05-07-2005, 16:39 I get a lot of stuff from these shops everything from telephones to computer software, clothes to furniture. I always think that if you look often enough you're bound to see things that you like although in the case of ornaments you may not need.
Every now and then I go to Crookes and then do Crookes, Broomhill, Ecclesall Road, town, London road and Abbeydale road and my favorites are St Lukes Hospice although there are plenty of others I could recommend.
Ms Macbeth 05-07-2005, 17:06 I buy books from charity shops, had some decent ones from BHF on the Moor and from Bluebell Wood, near the Market. Just moved house though, and taken loads of stuff to various ones. In the past bought some nice bits and pieces for the house, although never found much to wear.
sugarnspice 05-07-2005, 17:08 I LOVE charity-shop-shopping, especially Broomhill and Crookes like your good self. I love finding sneaky little bargains. I like the Help the Aged Book shop in Broomhill, that's a bit of a fave.
xxx
melthebell 05-07-2005, 17:47 i only buy records, cds, books and computer games from charity shops :)

never used them for clothes (apart from bad taste parties) always avoided them due to being XL and some blighter seems to buy all the large clothing :suspect:
I do use Oxfam for books though.
Macbeth - where's BHF on the Moor? I can't place that one.
I like looking in charity shops because it's the opposite of ordinary shopping, you just don;t know what you'll find. I used to spend hours browsing them and came upw ith some mad stuff. St Lukes on Ecclesall Rd is recommended, as is any Oxfam for books, especially those round Eccy Rd and Broomhill.
The best buy I ever had was when I got an old sewing box for £2 years ago, and I'm still using it now as a coffee table - it has wheels, it's small and you can stuff loads of junk inside it.
My tip is to choose your charity shop according to what you hope to find. Posh areas have the posher goods in. If you're after kitsch, avoid student areas as that kind of stuff gets marked up in price. If you're size 8 and want some nice clothes got to PDSA because I know someone who gives all her nice clothes away to them. ;)
I'm always on the lookout for 2nd hand books though, so I might check out some of the other places mentioned.
sugarnspice 05-07-2005, 19:42 BHF is on the corner opposite MCD's.
I should really go to some Car Boot Sales too, not done that for years. I'm a complete ebay addict too.
BHF isn't actually on the Moor, it's on the corner at the bottom of Pinstone St next to Zarella.
As for Oxfam shops, they rule.. I've worked in nearly all the Oxfam shops in Sheffield as well, except the one that used to be at Hillsborough corner and including working for the Campaigns office at the Glossop Road one.
sugarnspice 05-07-2005, 19:43 Just remembered, did anyone see that someone was listing a mad teenage diary thing on ebay the other week? Went for about £250 I think!!!
Wonder what I'd get for my self-respect......
