Ok nominations are now open!

The poll will open on 27th November and close on 31st November at 9pm.

Which book would you have us all read?

Have any of the BBC programmes ("The Big Read") inspired you to read something special?

what already? i've only just picked up a copy of slaughterhouse 5 (Fopp £3)

therefore i vote for something i've already read recently:

DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little
Irvine Welsh - Porno
Catherine Millet - The Sexual Life of Catherine M

doesn't bode well for my favourite subjects does it? diarrhoea and melina.

"Porno" is a cracking read, although it is hardly up to the standard set by "Trainspotting". In fact, can I suggest Trainspotting??? Great read, v interesting from a literary pov, excellent use lof language etc.

lol tina - I've given up hunting for my copy and I'm out to buy a new one tomorrow!!

lets not get too hung up about finishing by the stroke of midnight - but we need to have a new book fairly often to keep up with the speed readers who demolish a dozen books a week!!

Excellent suggestions - keep 'em comming!

How about something by Tom Sharpe? Classic author, very dark and funny... "The Throwback"'s my favourite but it is very sick so maybe one of his more witty ones to start off with...?

I've tried to read a few Iain (?) BAnks books - and never got past first couple of chapters. Just don't dig it man!

And as I don't want to suggest anything I've read recently - I shall have to think of something that I would like to read (to suggest) or go with the flow and everyone else's suggestions.

R.E Iain Banks: I felt that with Complicity but both Whit and The Wasp Factory are good reads.

That'll depend on whether it's sci-fi or set in the real world... He writes as Iain Banks for his real world books and Iain M Banks for his sci-fi stuff...

If you want an Iain Banks novel, I'd suggest "The Bridge" - not his best-known book, but more than worth a vigorous dissection and discussion. Or "Song of Stone" - these two lend themselves to discussion, whereas some of the others are fairly narrative-heavy, and might just predicate a discussion of the plot.

Is the 31st November a bit like the 12th of Never?

Or have I really only got two days to pick something?

May I suggest "To kill a mocking bird" promoted on the Big Read by John Humphries

- have read loads of Ian Banks and cannot see myself reading them again just for a book club.

I suggest ‘Flatland - A romance of many dimensions’ by Edwin A. Abbott.

You can download it at:

http://www.alcyone.com/max/lit/flatland/

I ‘know’ it won’t get picked, but it’s quite short, and well worth the read.

It’s actually a ‘classic’ written in 1884.

ps. I 'paid' for my copy, many decades ago! And re-read it every so-often.:)

Oh my god is that the date?

OOPS!!

I'll open a poll with all the titles suggested so far (including the ?ironic ones).

Lets give ourselves till the end of the week - say 9pm on Friday 5th to choose.

So you've got an hour and a half to get in any last suggestions and then the free and fair elections will commence.

As not a lot of people have posted enormous reviews for the last book I don't see a need to edit them down! Can we let the thread speak for our feelings about Slaughterhouse 5?

Trainspotting is bloody awful! It's the only instance I can think of where the film is actually better than the book! Sorry if you totally dug it but I was amazed at how bad it actually was.

"1984" by George Orwell is a good book but I reckon most people who can read have covered that one already.

Tell you what, "Quantity Theory of Insanity" by Will Self, that's quite good.

I think people might quite like that one on this forum.

Um... I imagine I'm too late to add that to the list.

the business was pants - can anyone tell me what it was about, apart from a story about Iain Banks going on a jolly round the world?

not a patch on:
The Bridge
Feersum Enjinn
The Wasp Factory
The Crow Road
Complicity
Walking on Glass

I take it the "book club" has fallen dramatically on its arse?

Shame - would have liked to debate the merits of "Trainspotting" with Nick the Pri*k

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

Cracking read, one of those "can't put it down" books.

I'm not sure how it was run, I have only discovered the patience to read books of late.

How about a ressurection?
