View Full Version : Def Leppard - Pride of Leeds
NewcastleOwl 04-07-2005, 12:49 I was out on the razz on Saturday night, so forgive me if I am recalling this episode incorrectly, but...
On returning home at about 1:00am? I switched on the telly to see some footage of the Live8 concert in Philidelphia. After falling asleep during the talentless Will Smith set, I was roused from my slumber by the camp tones of compear Graham Norton announcing the next act: "The Pride of LEEDS.... Def Leppard".
This inaccurate announcement can mean only one of two things:
1) G. Norton is ignorant and thinks DL are from Leeds
2) G. Norton knows of the ageing band's true Sheffield origins, but like so many outsiders, seduced by slick Leeds marketing campaigns, assumes that everywhere in Yorkshire is a suburb of mighty Leeds - in other words G. Norton is still ignorant!
Discuss.
Classic Rock 04-07-2005, 13:45 ....or G Norton had no idea really (doesn't strike me as a knowledgeable rocker) and a researcher told him (who evidently didn't know either).
Or maybe he was told, mentally made a note to remember a Yorkshire city and under pressure came out with Leeds instead of Sheffield.
I shouldn't lose sleep over it, G.N. hasn't made millions and isn't likely to.
carcrash 04-07-2005, 13:47 Mr norton has made millions. He is one of the highest paid tv ***** in this country and has signed a multi million contract in the usa.
Classic Rock 04-07-2005, 13:49 My word, there's hope for us all then, isn't there?
foo_fighter 04-07-2005, 13:51 I prefer the third option, that (in his own parlance):
3) Mr. Norton is an "Eedjit".
:D

i agree:D
Heeleytastic 04-07-2005, 14:08 I saw that! I'd had a few drinks, granted, and I wasn't paying much attention at the time, but that clueless utterance by Mr Norton made me look up! I thought I'd misheard, but clearly not. How can someone get it so wrong? I demand an instant apology from Mr Norton!! :P
Freebird 04-07-2005, 16:09 Just Breaking Away From Def Leppard,But Still On The Live 8 Subject.Did Anyone See Special Supplement In The Sunday Mirror?
Inside,It Had A List Of "All The Bands.....All The Songs".Interesting To See That,With Over 20 "Music Journalists" Reporting From The Concert No-One Seemed To Know What Songs Velvet Revolver Played.Typical,Slack Journalism By People Who Are Only Interested In Who Was In The Charts 25 Years Ago And Who Are The Flavour Of The Week.
Also,If Geldof Is Really As Persuasive As All His Cronies Keep Liking To Tell Us,Surely He Could've Got Axl & Izzy Over To Do A Re-Union.Might Have Made It Worth Watching! At Least Slash Was Still His Cool Self.
LesMcQueen 04-07-2005, 16:32 I remember once back in the late 80s when ITV used to show 'America's Top 10', hosted by Casey Kasem (Zoiks!)
Def Leppard were introduced as being from "The steel producing town of Birmingham, England"

Might be because Birmingham, Alabama is frequently cited as the 'steel city' of the US.
A friend of mine from Birmingham AL recently visited Sheffield and pronounced it 'a lot like home'.
Well, attempted to. We'd been in the pub for several hours by then.

I thought it was Pittsburgh ..... when I first moved here (10 years ago) most of my American friends knew nothing about Sheffield (apart from Full Monty) and so I explained it by saying it was the English Pittsburgh but not yet quite so regenerated
mr chris 04-07-2005, 18:12 At least they got it right on Look North this evening!

Having visited neither, I really couldn't comment; I'm just going on simply what my Alabama friend said.
Knowing America, though, I daresay it has several self-publicised 'steel cities'.
