I came to Sheffield week ago. This city is strange. There are so many empty factories. What is going on? Is there sth what I should know about Sheffield. Why the streets are so empty after 5 pm? It is a quite big city.#cheers

Because many moons ago it was found cheaper to get steel from abroad than to make it here.

And the students have gone home for the summer.

I was amazed at how quiet the city centre was a few monday evenings ago, just because all the students had gone home!

Except me.

Students own Sheffield thats why.

If the universities shut then half the cities amenities would go unused.

Those that arent students may be working and are too shattered at the end of the day to go anywhere other than the pub. Alternatively, and quite probably, they are on low incomes, income support or the dole in which case they havent got any money to go out and enjoy themselves.

Just for the record...Sheffield now produces more steel than at any time in its history. It's just not as visible as it used to be and doesn't employ as many workers due to automation and increased efficiency within the industry (pinched this bit from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield.)

There is a huge amount of regeneration going on, Mikke, you've only to look at the number of cranes on the skyline. Not all of them are building student accommodation lol. There's heaps of money being invested in the city.

But I do know what you mean about it seeming quiet at night :) Guess it's because we're geared up for the student population and when they're not here we're 45,000 drinkers (ok I know not all students drink) short!

I remember being taught that at school years ago and, upon arriving home, forwarding the information on to my father who flat refused to believe me.

In the end he accosted the poor teacher on 'parent's evening' or whatever and made her cite her evidence and sources. Still don't think he's truly convinced. She looked positively mortified and didn't speak to me as much in the following months.

Of course I'm never that pedantic... (ahem).

That's why I posted my source (that and obviously a desire to avoid plagiarism lol) - because I figured their site could take any flak, not me. And no, I don't know where the statement comes from. But I've heard it before, that's why I went looking for a website to substantiate it....

If the Universities **** down completely then Sheffield would effectively also shut down completely......we would lose many, many bars, almost all the nightclubs, and a great variety of shops and facilities. In fact the only thing to thrive in Sheffield if all the students left forever would be the Unemployment offices......

Students bring more money into Sheffield in terms of spending power for the local economy than you can possibly imagine......

OK, so if the 'grey pound' refers to targeted marketing of goods towards old people and, similarly, the 'pink pound' towards gay people, what is it for students?

Can I put forward the notion of the 'penny pound'?

It's not a contest to see who can get the most post you know!

I love going up-town in Sheffield during the student break, but I love freshers week even more - oh those young innocent kids, all smart in their new trendy outfits!

Student loans aren't for tuition fees. Tuiton fees are calculated through the 'means' of the student's parents. If the parents can't afford the full fees then they're charged at a discounted rate or waived entirely.

Loans are for living expenses and any student can apply for one and it's up the student how they choose to spend it- Be it on virtuous things or otherwise.

I think the fact Sheffield is dead in the summer is something that is commonplace in most large cities in England. Here in London you can tell when the students have gone because the weather improves and you no longer have eye candy when you're out'n'bout on a Friday/Saturday night!

I wonder where the missing students go to ? Maybe abroad ?
Surely most of them return to their home towns and cities , in which case you'd think the streets would fill up a bit with local students on holiday.
Then again , they might all be locked in their rooms , studying feverishly for next terms exams.
They must go SOMEWHERE ; after all the number is roughly constant.

Wow! :o

Do you think those facts are directly related, so...

...even the sun avoids students...

...or maybe it's just the clouds follow them "home" (wherever that is).

 ;) :hihi:

I seem to remember that the student population accounts for 50% of Sheffields overall population or some similar sort of thing.
So, if there are people working, commuting and studying surely it would be quiet, plus most people will be rushing home to enjoy the four days of summer we'll be getting for the forthcoming millenia :D

another factor for the city emptying may be that lots of factories and businesses are moving out of town to the industrial estates on the outskirts of the city.

But you get us locals who go to uni elsewhere back, sorry to ruin your happiness :P

And as for 'disgustin habits' etc, hows about the fact we spend it on finding somewhere to live during term time (and often having to pay even after we go home), feeding ourselves, and generally living on an amount half of what the majority get in wages?

Yes we don't earn it and it's a loan, but it IS paid back, and as others have said, if students didn't bring their money to pretty much all the major cities, there would be hardly any bars/amenities around anyway for you to think are too full :)

Sorry, just HAVE to go on the defensive when 'the student bunch' as a whole are moaned about ;)

I have always wondered this! Sheffield has been dead for the three summers I have spent here as a student. Maybe all the shef students stay in their university towns?

Even though I am a student I live in sheffield permanently now - it is my home and I love it.

I think it should be called the 'actually more than a pound' as my mountain of a loan sits gathering interest in the Student Loan Company offices :(

I'm an old man, and I've lived more than half my life in North America. When I left the city so long ago it was a bustling dirty place, which would be alive on a Saturday night until the pubs and dance halls closed. Then it would die through a usually wet and boring Sunday.
I was educated during the old 11 plus days, and if you were lucky you got into a grammar school toward a School Cerificate, and if successful a Higher School Certificate and a University scholarship. The big problem was that most fathers then believed that you should be out working in overalls at 14, and my father was no exception. So though I got my SC, I was not allowed to go any further. So I joined the Royal Navy and got my tech training there. I finally got a Higher National Certificate in Engineering.
So what's the point in what I'm saying? If young people are getting a chance to a college education with public financing, which they eventually pay back, then good luck to them.
If Sheffield is becoming a University city then good luck to it too.
I am familair with some great University cities here in the US, and at night they can be great fun. One of my favorites is Columbus, Ohio, home to Ohio State U. This is a town that lives and breathes college football, with a stadium that seats over 100,000. You don't just come to watch a game. It's a full day of tailgate parties with beer and barbeque.
I find students in the main to be courteous and fun loving who actually like having an old fart like myself among them to joke and laugh at.
