Just wondering if any software or aplpication exists to convert a 'normal' song recording into a karaoke-style one, i.e. removing the vocals.

I know there are gadgets that do this, and heard that the expensive ones are very good, and the cheapo ones not so, however is there another (cheap:))way to modify song recordings?

I am aware that there are special tapes and downloads etc. which you can use but I would like to use the original arrangements and not the tinny background you often get, also not be restricted in my choice of songs.

I keep threatening my OH with my singing voice which he hasn't really heard in the 3 years we've been together, well apart from rather restrained singing in shower:P We're going to try a real karaoke in a pub, but I would like to get a chance to practice at home, too.

You can get proper karaoke tracks (not the tinny midi or kar files) and play them on your pc without the lyrics showing on screen if you dont want them - this is dead easy..

there is also plenty of software that will remove vocals as well..

Wow that was quick thanks Ghostrider.

I have seen some decent downloads to be honest, just would be very expensive if I wanted to buy lots!

I haven't got a clue about the software...what it is called? How does it work? Do you have to buy it/how much is it? Would anyone on the Forum have a copy I could download?

So many questions, sorry but I am new to this:P

Its not quite as simple as "removing the vocals", but search the web theres plenty of places to get backing tracks, and if you are just practicing whats wrong with a midi track?

The only way software can removes vocals (as i understand it) is it compares the left / right channels of a stereo signal and removes the bit that is the same on both, but this give mixed result depending on the song.
