The BMJ had already warned of dangers (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?threadid=42450&highlight=kitchen+knife)

A mother has paid tribute to her "mischievous" four-year-old son who died after injuring himself while playing with a kitchen knife.
One family member, who did not wish to be named, said: "He picked up a knife from the kitchen. His mum had told him to put it down once. We think he might have hurt himself.

As tragic as this story is, you wouldn't tell a 4 year old not to play with a kitchen knife would you?

Would you?

Is it me? I'd have wrestled him to the floor & smacked his 'arris too!

It's an extremely tragic story.

I've just read the story and what amazed me is that a 4 year old was allowed to make himself a sandwich with a sharp knife.
Sure he was told to put it down but I agree, it would have been taken off him with a few stern words from me.
I have kids and there's no way I would let any of mine at 4 years old do something like that for themselves.
All their cutlery was the safety blunt style, specially designed for use by children, useless really for cutting, but it meant that their fingers were safe.

this is so sad and could have been avoided, telling a child not to do something makes them more eager to do it!
if my little girl came walking in with something like that i would take it off her and tell her of the dangers not just say put it down.,
the mother must be feeling awful just now and running every senario through her head.

My grandson is nearly 7 & he has buttered some bread with a round edged knife,he was taught the correct way to do it & never touch a sharp knife, what was the mother doing while a 4 yrs old was making a sandwich, there are some parents who cannot be bothered to show there kid's the correct way to do things these day's she was probably watching the TV at the time. What a tragic loss which could have been avoided if the mother had helped the child.RIP to the little child.
