View Full Version : Who can help just to finish the pond hole off this week please
cooljules 19-04-2009, 16:46 done a lot more today but in agony and there isnt so much more to do, it could be done in a day, 2 at most if i can get some help to finish off.
Liner is sat here and once the hole is completed can order the sleepers...
today had 12 turtles fighting for dry land space in the tiny pond and sooner the bigger one is completed, better for them...and i have 4 turtles waiting to come once its completed, as i just cant cram any more in the small pond and i dont want to have the larger ones put to sleep.
I might need some help with the sleepers and liner etc, when the sleepers arrive but at the moment need help with the hole.
thanks
at firth park.
dregar41 19-04-2009, 16:49 If i can get the car finished off i might be able to come up 1 day this week. we'll see. looks like good weather to do the pond. Ian
cooljules 19-04-2009, 16:56 i have a car, so i dont mind collecting people...or even taking them home
about a month ago a few people offered to come up, so i got loads of fresh bbq stuff etc but only 1 person did, a student kid.
I wanted the pond done by Mar at the latest, so i could start work on the reptile shed and big greenhouse, as we really need to make the living room more child friendly for when we start a family as its more like a scene from the Amazon at the moment!
I'll come help next Saturday if you like. I'm not a lad, and not exactly muscle bound, but I'm pretty good with a spade. I'll see if I can get some others to come too.

thanks, i think next sat we have to go and pick up a collection of geckos from somewhere in lincs...if a few people are willing to come over and help next sat i will see if i can change the collection day.
If a few people can come over in the week, and complete the pond hole, then the weekend it would be good to erect the 10x8 greenhouse frame, and the the glass in a week or 2..
pennypie 19-04-2009, 19:36 I was one of the people that offered, but something came up so I couldn't (and didn't have chance to let you know - sorry), but I have said to Joey that I will come with her on Saturday - however, done my own garden today and knackered my back, but will hopefully be better next week!
cooljules 19-04-2009, 21:43 yes painful isnt it, it killed me after 15 min, but i have a broken back from a accident anyway which doesnt help..
im so peed off, from the owners of some of the turtles, that i only took in last year if they promised to help.....now learnt not to trust what anyone says
Theres jobs people can do, even if its not digging or heavy work.
Let us know if you want us to come on Saturday. Otherwise, I'm free Sunday afternoon for an hour or so.

thanks, will post later in the week about the weekend.
if anyone can come in the week that would be great..were desperate for help to get the turtles in a much larger pond!
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 22:11 CJ-does it have to be in the daytime in the week? SOunds a silly question, but me and haddock would love to come and lend a hand after work, and meet your brood, and the nights are getting lighter:hihi:

no anytime would be great! even 2 am would do!
i had 2 young lads who came up last week while on school hols, did a good job!
I know when the sleepers come, there going to have to be drilled and maybe cut and moved around, so need some strong people then.
as i didnt get the pond completed last summer, as the people i took some in for (got too big for them.....) promised and let me down, by keeping them all in the house over winter cost a absolute fortune, lots of spot lights and a huge amount of food....rather than being out in a pond naturally.
You wouldnt belive how much the pond liner cost, and how many and how expensive the sleepers will cost etc....
I have a load of turtles coming from around the country via a reptile forum also, but cant take them until its completed, and more and more are being dumped in park ponds and rivers...and belived to be now breeding and actually hatching down sound, so destroying the local habitat etc.
more and more are buying turtles, dont realise how big they get and get rid....dont mind people keeping them, if they understand how big they get..
same goes with the meat eaters i have, chinese turtles that love nothing more than a rat, i cant rehome them, like turtles..so have to stay here for there whole lives
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 22:35 God, you do have a lot on your hands! I can't guarantee how much help I'll actually be-I can't honestly list "strong" in my list of talents, but I can have a bloody good go:hihi:
And I get to meet you babies:love: I don't know a hell of a lot about the kind of things you keep-I'm not scared of them, but haven't had many chances to have a gander up close before!

thanks, owts better than nowt.
i want to do a long term project to breed a type of gecko, a tokay, as so many are caught in the wild and die in bad conditions, yet sold for a few quid here...again going to cost me a fortune long run but hate to see how there treat.
Need to put up the big greenhouse, help is needed with that, as a lot of the reptliles are veggie eaters and its expensive.....even when im getting the reduced cost bags at the end of the day at the supermarket..
Costing us a hundred quid at least a week, with the rescue reps, and that doesnt include the equipment etc that needs changing every few months....
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 22:49 Oh Jesus, that's so much money! I know it wouldn't be easy, and I don't really know how you'd go about it-but could you get funding from somewhere? Or is there something we on here could do to help raise money?

im hoping once the pond is completed etc, people will sponsor a tutle at 50p a week, name it, get a foto etc....that will help keep that ok for running costs etc.
Cant be a charity, as we dont have money donated, you have to have a fair amount to get that status...
We get lots of animals just dumped on us, as people know what we do, and more often that not, sick animals.
Had companies offer stuff, say sheds, fencing etc, but i didnt have a website to show them, i got all the fencing completed (just about) for a couple of hundred, as its 2nd hand metal fencing panels, you wouldnt belive how much vandalism we had last year, and thefts...local yobbos trashing the rep garden and stealing my girlfriends ferrets.
i have just bought a lot of 2nd hand vivariums from someone on here, to upgrade all the rep homes and make some space for the new ones..
often a lot can be rehomed, that are healthy etc, but at least cant leave as came here ill or close to deaths door.
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 23:04 I take my hat off to you-you are fantastic!
How does getting charity status work?
I shall PM you tomorrow when I get a second about coming round-haddock and moi really would love to do something, however small, to help!

to be a charity you have to have at least 100 quid a week coming in, that was the 1st hurdle (i didnt read after that, wasnt much point!)
our local rep shop is good, gives us all the food and equipment at cost but the most cost is electric for heating, say each animal costs 2 quid a week in electric, we have 9 last week come in...ok the gex were healthy so found a good home, but the snakes will have to stay for at least a month until eating and i know there ok.
Have another royal python coming from DOncaster soon, nice snakes...but not good for begeinners as can be problem feeders
haddockman 20-04-2009, 09:58 Hiya, as LM said, we'd love to come and do something one evening after work!
You need the help and a bit of excercise never wouldn't do me any harm! :P

cooljules 23-04-2009, 10:13 now pretty desperate for some help to complete it, i had been turning turtles away until its completed, but i had to take in 3 from manchester yesterday. thats 15 now.
please, i really need to get it completed as soon as possible, for the turtles
thankyou
LitleMermaid 23-04-2009, 10:28 I am roping people in as I speak CJ-gimme a while and fingers crossed I'll have at least one other person to come with little old moi!
LitleMermaid 23-04-2009, 11:04 Having no luck recruiting! But haddock and moi can come do a couple of hours tomorrow evening if that's any good? Will keep trying to get other people to help :)
Can't wait to meet your brood!
Did you want me and Pennypie to come on Saturday for a while? I know you said you might be busy, but let us know.
If not, I can come over on Sunday afternoon. Not sure about PP though.
stellaxx 23-04-2009, 23:20 Hi Jules

LitleMermaid 25-04-2009, 18:11 Hello! Was nice to meet you properly last night CJ, but my bloody thighs are painful today:hihi:
COme on forummers, this is for a really good cause-can any more of you give up a couple of hours for the reps? You'll get to meet them and CJ's adorable cat and dog-that was more then worth the aches this morning :D
I fno-one else offers, we'll be back up sometime soon if you need us
I'll second that! Especially the cat bit ;)
Nice to see some young 'uns there this morning. So much bad press about kids in this area lately, it was great to see them giving up their Saturday morning to do some hard work for a good cause. Well done guys
If you can only spare an hour, it really does make a big difference.
LitleMermaid 25-04-2009, 18:20 I was so tempted to smuggle the cat out under my top Joey! The lovliest little furry ever!
It's nice for teenagers to actually have something to do isn't it? I imagine it'd be quite a treat seeing all the animals, and it is a rewarding thing to do, especially if they visit again when it's all done! Hark at me talking like an oldie; I'm only 21 myself:hihi:
stellaxx 25-04-2009, 19:00 Hi Jules
The boys have enjoyed it today. Jad + Ed finish school soon so i'm sure they'll be back once exams are over. If they want to do any more i'll let you know.

mummysaz21 25-04-2009, 20:45 are you still wanting some help?i can help tomorrow if your able to offer transport i have a baby seat formy son for car if you can as its a bit of a trek lol int have any muscles like lol
I have to agree this really is a worthwhile cause, jules is certainly one of a kind with all he does for his animals (despite what some tosser spreads about him) i know once i have a lot of time on my hands which will be soon, i will help out all i can, but meanwhile it's great to see people jumping on board and helping jules out, he's certainly worth the effort and time and so are all his animals!
jules is the man top bloke hope its goin well matey
cooljules 26-04-2009, 20:10 thanks for the kind words...much appreciated
lots got dug last week, not much more needs digging to complete the hole
i will be needing some help, in a couple of weeks, hopefully then when i have to order lots of new railway sleepers, to build the sides and height a bit, when i order them, they will be dropped off at the end of the road and will need 2 or 3 people to help get them around the back...and then someone with a big drill and who nows how to fit them secure together...once im ready to order them, if its ok, can i put a post up asking when a day is good for a few people to help lug them up the back to the garden....nick owt round here!
On a side note, i got a call a couple of days ago, to collect a slightly skinny lep gex, wasnt wanted by a previous owner hadnt wanted it, and someone took it in but then was given my number..
I have seen some skinny, neglected reptiles in my time, esp lep gex when not kept right, but this was disgusting.......it was dumped on someone because 1 died and they didnt want to pay the vets bills to try and save the other (as it turns out, i knew what it was, 99% right and couldnt be saved anyway)
so i had to have it destroyed straight away, as its a very bad disease thats is passed by them, not often, very rare, but when it appears everything must be destroyed, and burnt. no cure
I have the same lep gex i took in over 10 years ago, and sometimes these things happen, but its not nice...
I could show you a lot of fotos of dead animals that have come in in the last year, fotos before being put to sleep, or suddenly dying....you get used to it, but its never easy.
Reptile keeping, like BD's and lep gex, isnt hard, just get the basics right and there pretty hardy, but its when people arnt bothered, or start to slip...or even dont listen to advice you give them...esp when it costs a little to get the basic starter set up, and skip a few things....
Yes some reptiles get ill, not owners fault, it happens...but i see it 10 times more when its pure neglect...
Been a dumping ground for unwanted or sick animals in the last year....but nothing like 15 turtles coming (no 17, forgot about the meat eaters, not just sliders/cooters)
Often 2 long term reptile keepers vary on how things are done, or how is the best way, but either way, its very rare the animal is suffering, jut how it is....but there is a basic level to maintain, no matter how thats achieved
Sorry for the rant....the sick lep gex, and what happened today, hasnt been good......
green-veggie 26-04-2009, 23:50 Cool jules, what you're doing souds great and I'd love to be of some practical help but I'm a severely disabled wheelchar user and nowadays can't manage much that's practical!
However I do have some ideas and no doubt you'll have already tried some if not all of them.
1st. Have you tried Sheffield Freecycle? It's a great place where ppl advertise all kinds of things they want to give away, or you can put an ad on for something you're wanting. It's certainly worth a try. I don't have the web addy but I'm sure you can get it from google.
Other ideas. Have you tried contacting Rony Robinson at Radio Sheffield and getting interviewed by him? You could explain the situations for turtles and what you're doing to help. I bet there are loads of people like me, who never realised threr was such a problem.
Also why not contact the women's editor at Sheffield Star. This is a really positive 'story' about a woman doing something amazingly powerful and life saving that it's obvious she feels passionate about, on a shoe string ad hoc budget. Not forgetting your own health situation too.
