View Full Version : Dog walking on Wadsley Common
We live close to Wadsley Common which is ideal for walking our dog but last time I was a little worried as we have a Lhasa pup and most (big) dogs were off lead.
Obviously I wouldn't expect anyone to walk their (presumably trained?) dogs on the lead just for us.
As a first time dog owner, should I be worried that these dogs may go for her or should I just let her get used to these situations? One or two dogs did actually run, quite aggressively towards us.
I suppose i'm asking is it commonly accepted that dogs off leads are well trained and as such should be trusted?
Or should we stick to places where dogs are on leads e.g. parks etc?
Thanks.
Loxley/Wadsley Common does seem to have a lot of large dogs and virtually all off lead, but every other dog we've met is so well behaved that I've always felt really guilty about how barky and on edge Molly is around other dogs.
Dogs running towards you is not necessarily aggressive, nor is barking. It's not acceptable if it's scaring people (even when the dog is excited and happy) but it doesn't automatically mean a threat or warning. Most of the herding/guarding breeds run up to new people and animals as an instinct, so if the dogs that ran up to you were collies, GSDs or any other herding/guarding dog then that could have explained the running up without any aggression. I've worked hard on teaching Molly that the running at people and other dogs is unacceptable, but it's hard work with some breeds.
If you are concerned about your dog being a bit small and an easy target then would it help you to know that I've walked a pair of shihtzus up there since they were really very small and never had any major issues?
Please remember that your pup will be sensing your alarm and discomfort, so if you feel uncomfortable up on the common then walking somewhere a little quieter or in parks may be more your thing until you get more confident.

Errr, bit rude but yes I do.

unisol - as a first time dog owner, you'll soon get used to idiotic comments like the above ;)
I've been stopped whilst walking my two on various occasions to be told to pick up their poo... well, I would... but they haven't poo'd! What do you expect me to pick up exactly??
I've also been thanked by an old gent for picking my dog's poo up
Anyhoo - back to the original question. Try not to be too anxious about your pup as she will pick up on your anxiety and become anxious herself.
I occassionally walk my two on Wadsley Common (when I get chance) and my old boy isn't dangerous but he's a grumpy old sod and so he stays on the lead, on the rare occassion he comes off, he is called back to me as soon as we see another dog but my youngest is off and she is friendly enough with other dogs!
We've never really had any problem I think your biggest worry is that an over boisterous large dog will want to play and your pup is only tiny so be aware but not too worried as again, your pup will become worried also.
I've seen a few lhasa apso walked up there and they seem fine with being up there :)
PS. Very few parks require dogs to be on the lead anymore so that's not a given either... I've actually had problems in parks where I haven't had problems on Wadsley Common but that could be due to me walking up there less often :)

Have you been on the crackpipe or something? :loopy:

gave up crack years ago.....see the thing is that i wasn't being rude in the first place.,only stating that there wasn't only dogs that use the area as i am from the area in question.some do-gooder made a comment about my idiotic comment and this had a knock on effect.sorry to offend but that was meant to be a rude comment to obtain a negative reaction.to a positive comment based on keeping the area animal soil free..
garlicbread 18-04-2009, 16:28 OOOOOOOO penthouse apartment cant be bad, why does nearly everyone on here want stuff for practally nowt or have to sl*g each other off.
pyrospriggs, it was a stupid comment
There was nothing to suggest that unisol wasn't going to pick up dog mess and that's not why s/he posted!
I find it rather rude that just because we walk dogs it is conceived that we do not pick up after them.
I would like to request now that adults start picking up after their children as the amount of rubbish I see strewn about the local park is horrendous!

i am not bothered what you find rather rude nothing to do with you clean your own mess up and keep your trap shut.
hope you're not suggesting that i don't tidy up after my children as this is something that i feel strongly about.getting back to the dog pooh issue seen as you have tried to change the issue.if the owners do scoop their mutts poop then why is there poop every where?alien dogs?
I think that what Lotti is suggesting is that it is as ludicrous trying to claim that no dog owners clear up after their dogs as it is to suggest that no adults clear up after their children, even though there are blatantly members of both groups who are irresponsible enough to fail to do it.

Lotti have you seen the state of Loxley Common, it is practically knee deep in dog excrement. So either the majority of dog owners don't clear up or the minority are feeding their dogs far too much roughage :D

You are rude because you have butted in on a discussion about dogs being walked off lead and turned it into a dog poo argument.
You more or less accused me of having an untidy garden - I presume caused by not picking up dog poo.
If you felt the need to discuss dog poo, you should have started your own thread.
You are a first class idiot and have made yourself look as such.
Thanks to the nice folk above who have given advise.

They are quite cute dogs though aren't they wouldn't want to see it come to any harm with bigger dogs off lead
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 10:55 pyropriggs, this thread was not started to discuss dog mess-so please, give it a rest:)
You're quite welcome to start your own thread if you like, as it's obviously a topic you feel strongly about, as do many dog owners on here, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't make assumptions about other members, as it only gets people's backs up.
Thanks.

LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 11:21 In reply to the OP-We've never had any problems up there, we are off up there in a little while actually. The dog we have today has to stay on lead, but my aunty's dog, who will be walking with us is always off lead up there, and even though he's quite big, he'd never hurt a smaller dog. It is sensible to be wary though, and my number one piece of advice would be to work on your pup's recall, so you can get her close if you sense a sitution may get out of hand. Good luck! :D

She's a Lhasa Apso.
OK, look forward to it - i'm the tall, well built guy with dark hair.
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 20:36 I've asked nicely, and I'll do it one more time-I've deleted several posts so please, give it a rest, and keep on topic.
Okay... to allow this to get back on topic I'll reply to green god by pm as I wouldn't want to not respond to their questions :D
LitleMermaid 19-04-2009, 21:10 Thanks Lotti, I'm only just finding my feet as you can tell :hihi:
Be rude not to answer a direct question wouldn't it? :D

It's not for the want of trying!
LitleMermaid 20-04-2009, 08:15 It's not for the want of trying!
I know :)
We ended up going up through Beesley (sp?) woods instead yesterday-with two dogs off lead, and two on lead, and the dogs we met long the way were all very friendly, playing in the river with our dogs and generally being nice. I don't think the you should have anything to worry about with the majority of dogs, being wary is good, but there's nothing nicer then watching doggies play together in the river :D
green_god 20-04-2009, 08:30 Whos deleted my posts? I thoughts I'm made some good points with regards this thread

Before we go any further please read this post (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=4925908&postcount=15) I think that that it says it all, thread spoiling will not be tolerated, nor will arguing with the group leaders when they ask you to stop, please do not continue.
You have made your points they have been answered, leave it there now!
haddockman 20-04-2009, 11:36 We've been up to Wadsley Common a few weeks ago which was really nice! The views up over Bradfield towards the hills are lovely and there's a conveniently located pub nearby. Seemed to be a lovely sort of place to take kids and dogs for a run around. It's so nice having such nice places so close to our city.
