View Full Version : Should We Revert Back To Derbyshire

Historically, the land on which the southern part of Sheffield is built on is Derbyshire. The border has been pushed southward as the city grew and sprawled bigger, until now the southern border is at Bowshaw [Dronfield Roundabout].

In 1775 [230 years ago] the Derbyshire border was between Albert road and Valley road. And before that I believe it was where the Moor is now, when it was actual Moorland. In 1700 the Population of Sheffield was only 3,500 people, and by 1800 it was 31,000, sweeping up the Derbyshire villages of Woodseats, Norton etc. in it's wake.

Many people comment on one of Sheffield's assets is it's close proximity to the peak district and Derbyshire countryside. And the roads in Sheffield are generally appalling compared to those over the border in Derbyshire.
My proposal is we leave South Yorkshire Behind and re-adopt Derbyshire as the county of southern Sheffield, and then we can have much better roads, and call each other Duck all the time and call the north half of the city "Dee Dars"

What do you think?

Slightly off the topic , I know but when Berlin was divided physically into two , I often used to wondrer as a kid , what Sheffield would be like , as re--Berlin ------and where would the dividing line be .?
I used to imagine a line running from Renishaw , on Birley Moor Road and so on , down City Road , up Commercial Street on West Street , down the old St Phillips Road and then on Infirmary Road , out to Wharnecliffe.
The South and West would be west Berlin and the North and East , east Berlin , roughly like the real thing.
Strangely enough , Sheffield and Berlin have at least one thing in common------they both have large areas of park and woodland within their borders.
As to your idea :-- Would Sheffield Council[ "Your Money , Our Brilliant Ideas" ] agree to relinquishing one iota of their Empire ? You'd have to take it by force I'm afraid , potholes or no potholes .

Yebbut,
Don't you think that the "Real Yorkshire" is the Dales, James Herriot Country? And we here are in a valley riven borderland which is inbetwixt and not really that attractive, especially if you were to take away all the trees.

When you hear someone say [if you are down south] they are going to Yorkshire on holday, they don't mean south yorkshire.

No - I don't want to be a tup fankew ... It's just not the same as being able to say you're Yorkshire born and bred ....

I'd support reverting back to the West Riding though, or ...

What about - incorporating Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and all the little places in between and becoming GREATER SHEFFIELD

After all, it worked for Manchester ...

We had this in Lancashire, did we want to stick with Lancashire or be called Greater Manchester.

As if

I only live here but Yorkshire is how I see it.

I am from Sheffield, but have lived in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire, for about 7 years.I do kind of consider where I live as a kind of extra sheffield suburb, as it's so easy to get to, I don't really feel like I've moved from my Sheffield life. When we drive home from Sheffield it's really comforting to get to Fox House and feel slightly removed from the full on, traffic ,people, shops, wheelie bins etc.
Derbyshire Council is soo much better though, you ring and generaly get through to the correct department, and a competant useful person, and they genneraly get on and sort any complaints out.Wheras on the occasions I've tried to ring Sheffield Council, their unhelpful, patronising,"it's not my department anyway!" attitude, you just know they are going to do absolutely nothing about it anyway. That's if you get through in the first place.I have friends who Have had to apply for housing benefit in Sheffield and it has taken months to sort out.
While I'm ranting why is SheffieldTourist Infomation so useless? Is thier another big one I don't know of or is that piddly display in the millenium gardens all they have to offer?
I have travelled alone quite a lot in Europe and have found multi-lingal T.I workers so helpful, for where to go out ,where the nearest campsites out of the city are ,which bus is most reliable, what areas to avoid at night etc..If Sheffield Council and residents want tourists to visit Sheffield, they could at least provide a decent T.I office for them, and for Sheffielders ,or does Sheffield have nothing good enough to want to encourage tourist to experiance? It would just be useful to have a list of all the little local festivals that are scattered around the place, that sort of thing, one off carboot sales etc...
O.k rant over appart from, how big is Castleton compared to Sheffield? Now check out the T.I offices, and thiers another in Edale just over the hill!

I think you are missing the point here.

In Chesterfield, they call people from sheffield, and as far as I know people from Barnsley Dee Dars. Because us sheffielders, and Barnsley[ers?] say "thee" for "you" which sounds to them like "Dee" especially if the TH isn't properly pronounced. And we say "Thar" or "Thine" for "yours", similarly sounding like Dar. All this is entirely good natured and affectionate Neighborly banter in my experience, I have Worked, Gone out in and Stayed in Chesterfield many times, and I find them to be mostly very friendly and nice cheery people, and I have a great liking for the place.

I am myself brought up in Hillsborough, so I am a north Sheffield person who has emegrated? to woodseats.

I'm in Derbyshire... I love the border that seperates me from Sheffield.

So no!

The post-war growth of Sheffield as a major city naturally encroached on neighbouring parts of Derbyshire, and places like Norton, Beauchief and Beighton became indistinguishable from the city itself. A realignment of the boundaries became necessary, and this occurred in, I think, 1974.

As a Derbyshire lad myself, I much regretted this loss at the time. But it was necessary, and it made sense. It would not make sense to revert to the former border with Derbyshire, and as a Sheffielder myself now, I would oppose any such suggestion!

No, in 1974 the government joined Stocksbridge and Chapetown onto Sheffield. Everyhing previous to that was Sheffield annexing bits of surroundinf areas:

1974: Bradfield, Stocksbridge, High Green, Grenoside, Chapeltown, north Ecclesfield.

1968: Mosborogh, Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Birley, south Ecclesfield.

1952: Norton, Jordonthorpe, Woodhouse.

1934: Dore, Heeley, Woodseats, Beauchief, Richmond,Rivelin valley.

1906: Hillsborough, lower Stannington, Parson Cross.

Derbyshire was never as near as Moorfoot, the old boundary was the rivers: Limb Brook, Sheaf, Meers Brook.

There's a really interesting map in the local studies library. Go through gates and turn 270 degrees to the right to find it.

Wouldn't it be easier to just turn 90 degrees left?

Yeah, good idea, also I reckon there's room for some flats at Fox House, and then we could probably get away with a decent dual carriageway right through.

[awaiting vengeful repercussions from all the tree huggers!]

I live in the Abbeydale Park / Totley District of Sheffield.
Up until 1924 (I Think) this was in Derbyshire.

I would love to go back as this would mean that the road's were smooth and the bus services ran to time.

we should take a bit more of derbyshire- castleton, hathersage, matlock etc are all satellite towns to sheffield. Could rename the whole area "sheafshire" or greater sheffield. Or you could move the whole of sheffield into derbyshire and then rename the whole county sheafshire. Then once its all under our council's control, they could knock down pevril castle and build a big block of council flats.

South Yorkshire - the county of Yorkshire was scrapped many years ago. However, East Yorkshire keeps switching between EY anf Humberside, I believe.

Alex - :)
