As a child in the 1950s I lived at Mount Pleasant Close in Chapeltown, and remember going to the local shops which were on the main road leading from Mount Pleasant Church to Lane End: Robson's Sweet Shop, Brookes's Off Licence, Lifford's Toy Shop and Boyes Hardware. Does anyone remember these, and even better, where I might find any photos of them? I'm doing a scrapbook for my sister and would love to include them, or memories of them.

I lived at no 14 from 1992 until 2005, can't help with old photos but lots of memories! Some of my neighbours in the 90's had lived there from them being built, Walt and Elsie at no 20 and my immediate neighbour at no 16.
What number did you live at?
Loved living there as it was a little cul de sac where we all looked our for each other - happy days.....

I lived at no. 21, my parents were Norman and Jean Lewis. We lived next door to the Broadhursts at no. 19 and the Hemingways at no. 23. In the corner were Mr. and Mrs. Martin (Walt and Elsie?). They lived next door to Mr. Wiggington, then there were Mr. and Mrs. Adams and the Hitchmans I think. Then Mrs. Varley in the bungalow near the 'snicket'. Who was your immediate neighbour at no. 16?

I lived in the cottages behind Mount Pleasant chapel from 1970 to 1976. Both our kids were born then. I remember the area from the '50s as well, Brookes's beer off, Liffords and the pals I had who lived in Lane End flats. Peter Notley was one of 'em.:)

We used to walk past those cottages on our way to Charlton Brook, where we would play for hours. We also went that way for the Mt Pleasant Sunday School outing after the Whitsun parade to Chapeltown Park. My Grandad was Harold Lewis, who looked after the grounds of Mt Pleasant chapel, and he and my Grandma were very active in the chapel.
I was friends with Kathleen Notley, Peter's sister, and used to go to their flat at Lane End. Did you know anyone from Mt Pleasant Close or Lound School?
I can't remember any names from Mount Pleasant Close but did John Fowler go to Lound school. He would be the same age as Pete ?
Back to the shops, I can remember one of them being a barbers shop. Think it was the first one down after the Methodist Church hall.
I think the clock in the church was always refered to a Freda.

I don't remember a John Fowler I'm afraid. I do remember the barber's shop, now you come to mention it, and that the clock was called Freda. I think it was named after the wife of either Mr. Newton or Mr. Chambers.
