basically i rar'd som pictures up and split them into 3 15mb archieves so i could send them through email. this was a week ago, i sent the archieves to my mate and he extracted them perfectly. i try to unrar them myself today and it tells me the crc iis currupt.
now i know that the file isnt, i tried a test on a number of occasions and came back it was working. but extracting is another matter.
i thought fair enough ill try another proggie (winace) same problem. email the archieves to my mate aagain and they extract good. ???
wtf is going on.
so just now i burned the files to disc for taking to my other computer, and they extract fine. tried the disc on my computer that was giving me errors. bingo extracted fine.
but the files on the hdd dont.
now i just downloaded a program thet needed extracxting to get to the setup.exe and that wont work either. i have no spyware/adaware. clean virus scans. and a hardware diagnostic all come back perfect. anyone else have a prob like this and know how to fix.
i hope i didnt lose you all in that ramble lol
Have you tried a re-install of WinRAR?
If this doesn't work, have you tried 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) which works on almost all archives.
Don't know why you're having the problems you've described though?

Strange.
I've just downloaded and installed it perfectly?
Then again, this PC is using Win 98.... Will try with the HexPee machine......

Stranger still......
No problems on the XP machine either:confused:.
Have also tried using the Linux machine, and it works fine on that also...
Have you tried (In WinRAR) to right click on the files then click extract from the menu and when the winrar window comes up...tick the Keep Broken Files box in the lower left of the screen?
It doesnt expain why the cyclic redundancy check is failing but you may find the files are ok.
As for 7zip not working..Try their site for an answer, I use this on XP and its a great free app and worth a bit of searching.
Good luck
Although you said it passed diagnostics, this sounds like a hardware issue, or maybe a badly broken installation of windows that can't count :) I had a weird issue once where I made an SFV file (CRC error-checking), tested it and it would sometimes check ok, sometimes not. Wish I could remember what the culprit was in the end, sorry! ;) I think it may have been a problem with dodgy memory (it was a while back)...
If I were you, I'd find some way of stress-testing the machine, and particularly the memory. I've also had problems with odd things like northbridge chips overheating and giving me unexpected errors, although that usually causes crashes.

ahh the plot now thickens.
im starting to think my pc or one of the components are on their way out.
still getting the winrar errors btw, now sometimes when extracting or when some other prociessor hungry apps are running, I hear my computer shutting down just the interal hardware like my hdd and fans spin down then start back up a second later. The display stays the same and can carry on as normal for roughly 30 seconds then it hangs mouse wont move, keyboard wont respond, and the only way to break out of it is a hard reset (unpluging and replugging ;) )
this is very strange especially when on restart its teling me its my "WEBSTAR cable modem 100-200" in the error report. im with telewest broadband. im thinking either im conflicting somewhere. or i need a new psu? maybe something is taking up all of the power and forcing a restart but not shutting down properly.
