View Full Version : 8Mb Bulldog broadband. Anyone got it?
neeeeeeeeeek 03-07-2005, 00:45 Reet. I have cable telephone and broadband and its fine. BUT. I keep getting this 8 Mb offer thrown at me. Is it any good? I would need to change my phone line and pay to keep the same number. Is it worth it? How much does it actually cost with the phone line etc?? does anyone actuallty use it??
Taaa
:D
I’m with Telewest at the min, n very happy with it. Started off at the basic 512bk and for been a loyal customer am now at 1mb for the same price. Also have the option to upgrade for a small fee, a lot better than what most competitors are, especially BT
For gods sake don't go with NTL
this (http://www.adslguide.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=28187) should tell you all you need to know about bulldog.
For the love of all that is good DO NOT go with Bulldog until you've been to http://www.bulldog-hell.com.
I'll be honest with you we've had nothing but trouble since we switched to Bulldog. Also they promised us a free upgrade to 8.Mb but it still hasnt happened. Their customer service is terrible, it's impossible to get through to an speak to someone (unless you're trying to ring the sales dept. in which case they answer straight away!)
Internetowl 03-07-2005, 08:43 I work for wanadoo and we often get the 'bulldog do this, etc etc' - I always advise them to change if they really think it will be any better - glad to see Bulldog are as poor as we KNEW they would be...

I too was with telewest, however just changed to Plusnet and have to say, the service etc. Is by far better and a tenenr cheaper per month.
A.B.Yaffle 03-07-2005, 10:34 We have been with Bulldog since March, and we didn't have to pay anything to keep our old BT phone number.
The service is very good and very fast, but when we had a problem with it I found their "customer services" to be probably the worst I have ever had to deal with. Still waiting for our first bill, as all the bills they have sent so far have been wrong so I cancelled my direct debit until they send a correct bill!
One good thing about Bulldog is that they are very cheap and you only have to sign up for 1 month, and we can't sign up for a 12 month contract as we are hoping to move in the near future.
DaBouncer 03-07-2005, 10:35 Plus.net will soon be instroducing a 4mb and 8mb package (i'm currently on plus.net 2mb).
Plus.net service is excellent and I can whole heartedly recommend them.
Having previously been with Bulldog during this fiasco (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/09/01/bulldog_broadband/) I'd say stay well clear.
Just check out www.adslguide.org for info relating to Bulldog and there lack of customer empathy.
mr.blaze 03-07-2005, 11:32 I think Bulldog are another Red Hot Ant, Plusnet are the best ISP imo.
RunningFree 03-07-2005, 13:39 I have got it, well currently on 4mb but in a couple of weeks I will be upgrading. The speed and connection are brill but god help you if you ever have to phone their support. My god it is so frustrating, can never get through and if you manage its after being on hold for 45 min minimum!
A friend of mine got 8mb last week, and loves it. Aint had a problem with it ......Yet

But first have a read of the comments (http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=freeserve) about them. They seem to be breeding some unhappy bunnies.
Well, I've been half-tempted looking at their ads. Stayed clear for now though, figuring "better the devil you know". Telewest works for me, can only remember once in 2 years when service was lost for a significant length of time.
I don't think Bulldog looks so appealing now.
How long before they start contacting websites to ban discussion about ther service, just like happened here a while ago with a *ahem* certain well-known car "supermarket"?
Bulldog have the edge at the minute because they're the only provider who can supply higher-speed broadband. BT Wholesale have yet to launch their 4Mb and 8Mb products (due end of the summer if the current trial is successful). If I were you I'd wait for BT to release the new services and go with a regular broadband ISP (which resells BT's services), not a cable or LLU provider.
Bear in mind that if you live more than about 3km from the exchange or your line is dodgy, you won't be getting 4Mb anyway.

I became a Plusnet customer two months ago after shopping round for a new ISP and having read reviews on just about every provider on the market. Not had a problem with plusnet so far. Easy to use and continually on.

Have to agree.
The only problem I have with Plusnet is that they're sponsoring Wednesday's football kit next season. :shakes:
Plusnet have also been considering 8mb for some time now, don't know the ins and outs though.
I was one of the first people in Sheffield to get broadband and had to go with BT... not many happy memories of that experience including many occasions when emails got lost.
Now I am with PlusNet and am a very happy customer - they seem to be going through a bit of rapid expansion at the moment and the support isn't quite as classy as it was, but it still beats anything else I've come across.

Just received a call from Bulldog letting me off my bill as it was wrong, and they say they are employing over 150 new customer service staff from next week to cope with over-demand.

I think s/he would have been on one of the original residential broaband trials, probably back in about 1999/2000.
I agree with the comments about Customer 'services' - it's a minimum 30 mins in a queue and then through to someone who knows very little about the product and absolutely no technical knowledge whatsoever.
However, after a shaky start, I called today to prod them into uncapping my seemingly capped 4mbps line and it shot to 8mbps within a couple of hours. Connected to Broomhill exchange which has just had a virtual path upgrade and am getting downloads of around 850k/sec. Bliss!
I had to change my phone service to Bulldog to get the faster (4mbps+) broadband but I can't fault that at all, the switch was seemless and there's been no problems with that.
AlquarUK 04-07-2005, 23:53 what could you possibly download that you can talk about on this forum with that bandwidth?? ha ha
If you think 8mb is fast, then what about 24mb check this out http://www.bethere.co.uk/

porno heaven!! ha ha :D
gremlin_mick 17-07-2005, 09:18 I'm also on Bulldog 8mb.
I'd echo the comments regarding the customer (NO)service department. A real joke.
The connection is very stable, although I live nearly 3km from the Attercliffe exchange, and cannot get speeds much higher than 3.5mb. This is more than adequate for me though at the moment! I did know this at the time though, so it wasn't a problem. You really SHOULD look into where your exchange is before you buy though, as you could be wanting 8mb, and only capable of getting 2 or 3mb!
I think Bulldog didn't anticipate how popular their 4mb (now 8MB) service was gonna be, and they were swamped with new customers in a very short period, hence the many complaints about slow connection times etc etc.
I know a lot of people have read the stories of Bulldogs "crappy" service, but for every person with a horror story, how many others do you think there are that are quietly happy with their service? :)
Go Wanadoo
My personal experience of Wanadont isn't so pleasant.
After 6 months with them, they had a problem with my direct debit, and without informing me, simply cut me off! When I eventually got through to the customer service rep (30 mins and god knows how much money later), they explained that they would reconnect me if I paid my subscription (£15) per day for 4 days!(apparently this is how many payments they had been unable to take!) Needless to say that my reply had 'stuffed' and 'get' in the sentence and I never went back.
Since then, I've moved house and joined Telewest, and I've not had any problems, can't recommend them highly enough!
coolwill2k 17-07-2005, 16:32 Ive been with Bulldog for nearly a year now. Started on 2MB and then got a free upgrade (and Price reduction!!) to 8MB. The speed is totally amazing and its great and ive never had a problem with them at all.
However, i would agree that their telephone waiting times are a bit long, but im willing to accept that.
8MB UNLIMITED for 29.50
(First month free)
Can't go wrong :-D
I work in a shop and we have been waiting to be connected to Bulldog for 4months. We are still waiting:mad:
commuter 18-07-2005, 14:29 I'm with aol bb on a bt line and generally have no problems. I have had some recently but they coincided with updating xp so could very well be down to that, having got the ms security patches, sp 2 for xp etc aol software failed but on re-boot recognised that I had updated xp and offerred their own patch to match it to the updated version of xp.
Recently been converted to zen (http://www.zen.co.uk/), they don't offer 8Mb on a connection that they can't keep going, but comparing them (http://www.dslguide.org/isps/compare.asp?aol=ON&blueyonder=ON&bt=ON&bulldog=ON&plusnet=ON&zen=ON&cmp_action=Compare) to the others they rule!
And you get a block of 8 static IP addresses, which means a lot to a dweeb like me!
Oh, & for the moment at least, good luck if you expect over 4Mb/s outside the M25...
**edit: more fun a games with Bulldog! Bulldog faces Ofcom complaints (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/18/bulldog_ofcom/)
Been with Bulldog for nearly 18 mths and in that time i had a 2 meg line for 12 months with 4 hrs of downtime that i know of and then changed to the 8 meg with phone and that was completed inside 20 days of ordering.
Bulldog like most other ISP's have a totally crap customer services but with only 4hr of downtime in 18 mths i didnt need to call them so IMO they can be as bad as they want.
The line i'm on now is 8 but I got them to re sync it down to 6meg as there was the odd drop at at peak times which has been put down to old lines that need a bit of work. My logic was to have a rock steady 6 instead of risking 8. I've read on the Bulldog site that they are upgrading all the lines but tbh i'm in no hurry as 6 is nice and fast.
As with any ISP..Dont beieve all that you read as its not all bad news but my one bit of advice would be that you shop wise ;)
Its fast turning into a buyers market for internet and you dont need frills like email etc as there are plenty of good free services for those now.
jonhanson 19-07-2005, 12:12 8 meg £20/month for 12 months no contract 20days connection im happy!!!
