Very dry mister.

It's been calculated that each artists who appears on stage will see a 500% uplift in back catalouge sales over the next couple of months.

Those selfless superstars. God love 'em!

One of the 18 countries which is having its debt written off is Tanzania. This is the same Tanzania that in 2001 received a £3billion debt-relief package from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Shortly after getting the cash, President Benjamin Mkapa bought himself a private jet for £14million. And when Gordon Brown visited Tanzania and announced a further £35million of debt relief, President Mkapa celebrated by buying himself an even fancier plane - for £30million

;) sensible Devon not stupid you give money to Africa

Jon, I was only having a laugh:
Mucho respecto to fellow forum Doctor Who fan.
---creep, creep---

Anyway, I don't give money to Africa directly. I may (or may not), be giving some of my money to charity, but I would not want to go into that here.

I agree totally with you that some countries are badly run. (Lucky we have the Blairs to look after us).

It doesn't change the fact that most of the American bands so far have been carp!

Look don't get me wrong its the 21st century NO ONE should die due to lack of food. Trouble is the money goes to the wrong people, we could have live 8 each week and it won't make no difference unless we get rid of corrupt goverments :(

Just get more 'slightly drunk' ; that's the answer!

(How do you get 'slightly drunk' anyway? That's like being in a car accident and ending up 'slightly' dead. Doesn't make sense!

Tipsy may be the word for your state neeeeeeeeeek!)

There's that tw@ of a Geldof with rubbish bans like U2, others playing rubbish Indie music, it's really not worth it.

If you're concerned about poverty, all good for you, then simply donate to your charity, no need for a lame concert full of has beens and ridicule.

Aren't you missing the point here? The publicity raised by the makepovertyhistory campaign and Live8 has led to a real possibility of the wiping out of $55 billion of debt... I'm not sure that would have been achieved by me donating a fiver :)

(mind you, I thought the anti-war marches might convince the government to think differently too ;))

I've wittered on elsewhere about this...but.....

We wipe out the debt. Great. What will then happen is that the same corrupt buggers will still be in power in these countries and the next time they ask for money the G8, the IMF, the World Bank - they're almost certainly going to say 'Yes' again.

A country's President spends 14 or 30 millions on a plane. That money is skimmed from the 'big aid' that comes in. If you want to REALLY help these people, look for small charities that are operating with people 'on the ground', so that the fiver you give can really make an impact to the poor who are suffering, and not to the price of a bag of peanuts inside that guy's Lear Jet.
