View Full Version : Live8 concert sheffield city council
dinkdankdo10 02-07-2005, 23:24 i have just finished watching the live8 concert and find myself amased and disappointed sheffield city council didnt arrange for this to be shown on a large screen somewhere in the city. i just hope they can pull their fingers out in moving forward and catch other leading cities up with forward thinking plans..........
come on lets be leaders !
Totally agree with you. There's another thread somewhere about this - the big screen that is.
rubydazzler 02-07-2005, 23:47 Were other forward thinking, leading cities showing it on large screens scattered about, then? Unfortunately, I was working all day and most of the evening so wasn't able to see much of it.
Maybe it would have been nice, for those of us who had the time to watch but do you think all those other people who aren't interested would have been so keen? Can hear the outraged screams of "wasting our council tax" echoing across the Peace Gardens already.
dinkdankdo10 02-07-2005, 23:57 i hear you but really how much does a large screen cost? im sure its not pence but come on, i mean they where capable of showing snooker on a large screen !!!!!
i understand leeds etc, even hull ! was showign it on large screens !
i feel that sheffiels is well and truely behind other cities. again i use an example that i know to be fact, bar clsoing times, i knwo this is a hot topic but surely we are at an age where opening times of 11 are unrealistic with longer working hours etc. lookat other leading cities such as liverpool they have had bars opening till 2 for years now, sheffield only just catch on.
anotehr point is the state of the city centre ! not allowing ikea to build here !!!! are the council mad ??? or do they just want shops like TJ hughes ..................
anyway im off to bed
So what was the Big Television screen in Peace Gardens for then?
carcrash 03-07-2005, 01:51 Thats because the council and whatever quango organises stuff in this city are useless.
Check out Tom Commons bit in this months sandman.
skyfitsboy 03-07-2005, 02:38 I hate all the croons and dead wood in the Council so much they need burning and fast!!!
When did Kingston upon Hull, get renamed "Even Hull" every time I see the place mentioned on here it is prefixed with the word, even. It is a fairly nice place now, nearly everyone who has actually been there says that.

Well, given that virtually everyone in this city will have a TV, and it's being broadcast on free for view television, why SHOULD the Council stick a big screen up?
Apart from the mechanics of doing it - which aren't that hard - there's the consequent insurance, policing, etc.
Then there's the issue of why should people in Sheffield that DON'T want to view the event have it forced down their throats if they happen to be in that part of the city?
And yes, it IS an issue of money - the Council already **** away a lot of the money they get. For crying out oud don't encourage them to do more of the same.
And as for being leaders, if you want stuff to change get out there and change it. Get elected, get involved with projects, do stuff. Don't just watch the eejit box and then go to bed.

its about getting people together, interacting in a global event, instead of being isolated, sat in the house, hating your neighbours?
something like that :P

I actually interact with people quite happily, thanks.
I quite like my neighbours as well.
It's just that I fail to see why it's the Council's responsibility to pay for people's entertainment. If you wanted to get together with people to watch the event, why not invite your friends around and get the TV on an extension lead? ;)
In terms of getting people together - I'd rather people got together and actually DID something rather than got together to WATCH something.

would invite complete strangers round yours? people you wouldnt normally talk to?
and the thing about doing things and watching things?? all down to personal taste, id rather watch something rather than do something :)
not that i want to watch it on a big screen, just putting a point across for why they would.....well one reason anyway :)
It's my understanding that the BBC didn't want to put up a large screen in Sheffield and were looking to locations where they already had screens booked in for other reasons. Last year there was the screen in the Peace Gardens as part of the same BBC programme. Similarly, the screen put up during the snooker is provided through the snooker contract.
firecracker 03-07-2005, 12:58 I watched the concert on the big screen in Leeds yesterday. Great atmosphere, especially drinking outside the Cocoon bar overlooking the big screen. Can't wait for the World Cup, when there'll be an even bigger screen (around 8m x 5m) fittted in the recess above the Ha Ha bar to view the matches :D

I agree. Now if it were say the first landing on Mars or soemthing I'd agree to a big screen. Its only a pop concert people. You couldn't avoid it even if you tried.
Could there not have been a compromise? Maybe a screen in a park or something like that?
I ended up watching it on my own as other half was at work and I felt a bit let down. It was the biggest global broadcast ever and while I was comfy and not getting sunburnt I wasn't sharing the moment for want of a better and less cringe worthy phrase :D

You got your facts wrong!
Sheffield City Council is NOT responsible for bar closing times. Licensees apply to the magistrate's court for an extension to opening hours, not to the City Council.
However, this will all change in November, when the new Licensing Act comes into force.

We hope it changes in November, and that the council aren't as bad as the magistrates, because licensing hours is yet another area where Sheffield is light years behind Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, where nearly every bar stays open till 2 and sometimes 3am.
Good on Sheffield City Council for not supporting the Brainwashing Festival AKA Live 8.
