I couldn't name my 3 favourite films but the Back to the Future trilogy is great, I never get tired of watching it.

Others I like: The Green Mile, Gladiator, Harry Potter, Star Trek films (apart from Insurrection which is rubbish) and I saw Catch Me If You Can recently which is very good.

I'm with you Moonmaiden...I'm a big fan of Tarrantino.
My 3 fave films would have to be

3. Girl Interrupted

The second two are subject to change, but Pulp Fiction will always be number one!

Well, my all time number one has to be ....

The Princess Bride! (I can't believe no-one else mentioned it (I'm sure someone did now, and I'll get flamed for not reading properly)

Then

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Let's face it, they're all one long film really, and yes, I know RotK isn't out yet ...)

And Finally

Schindlers List (Though the book is better, they usually are .. in fact, that applies to my first two choices as well)

Ermmm in no particular order

Fight Club - one of the very few occasionas where the film has been better than the book!
The Big Sleep - it may be heresy but I think I actually prefer it to Casablanca!
and
ermmmmm....
Labyrinth - for its all round fabness!!!

And three least favourite...

Titanic - the worlds most formulaic movie - I'm sure the script just read - gratuitous tit shot, gratuitous sex scene, gratuitous chase and gratuitous gun fight!
Daredevil - I walked out and couldn't remember what it was about it was such an appalling piece of Hollywood naffness
Very Bad Things - it may have got better - but its still the only film I have ever walked out of - and I wasn't alone!

Fave 3 films: (changes every time I am asked)

Solaris (not the hollywood remake)
Starship Troopers
The Seventh Seal

as an aside....

several people (on other threads) have hinted that this forum is just one big 'old pals act'.

I would say that some of us are 'pals' - but 18 months ago we were all complete strangers to one another and we have gotten to know and like one another.

Why would anyone want to dispel the impression that this forum has members who like and respect one another.

And we have met in person, in smaller numbers at the CRB, the haha bar and on one truly memorable occasion, a house party in West Yorkshire.

But, in my opinion, that is something to celebrate - the forum actually having an effect on real life, rather than the megabytes of ephemera that pass through the forum on a weekly basis like a dose of salts without affecting much apart from people's blood pressure :)

These friendships are valued, by me at least, both the personal and the net mediated ones.

So hopefully you'll see fit to come to the next meet, wherever it may be, and check us out. I hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

I would imagine that Lickszz' comment is alluding to the fact that you have may an alter ego on the forum (two accounts). I don't know this, but that is how I read it. Lickszz is a mod and can read your IP number for every post you make from your computer so if anyone knows whether you have two accounts it is him (and Geoff and the other mods)

Or I am barking up the wrong tree entirely? - Lickszz may reappear to sort out the confusion.

I thought this discussion was about favourite films! Mine are

- Some Like it Hot
- North By Northwest
- The Long Kiss Goodnight

obviously Matrix, Jaws, Goldfinger, The Sting, The Big Lebowski, Seven Samurai, Star Wars Lords of t Rings and Jerry McGuire could be swapped in for any of the above depending on mood.

Hmmm.... fave films?

Well, off the top of my head

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
Has to be my all time number one. I've seen it dozens of time sand it still makes me laugh! Even though I know the script backwards!!!!

Then in no particular order....
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND SPECIAL EDITION
The best of all the flying saucer movies. originally it had a very weak ending until Mr Spielberg 'tinkered' with it.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
I always think a good movie is one that can instill some kind of lasting emotion into the audience. A horror where everyone comes out of the cinema laughing and joking just hasn't worked. But I remember this late one dark night at the old UCI at Crystal Peaks and the audience were too scared to walk out of the complex to their cars!

FINAL FANTASY
It has to be up there for it's groundbreaking special effects. Lets have more life-realistic CGI movies please.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
Not just a movie. More an interactive entertainment experience.

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
Some say it's too sentimental, but something very similar actually happened to me just as the film came out, so it has a special personal appeal.

50 FIRST DATES
A film designed to make you laugh, but it can also make you cry at times. Again, it drags you right in there.

THE STAR TREK MOVIES
I've never seen a bad one! They have just the right balance of comedy and now the effects are up to the job (something they weren't for the TV shows of the 60s) they are just great fun.

That's a magnificent film.

I always cry watching it.

My favourite line from it is "You have to get busy living or get busy dying". I first saw the movie when my life was in free fall - recently lost my business, my mum had died and I was waiting some test results back to determine whether I had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

I remember sitting there and letting that line wash over me and just determined at that point that I had to "get busy living".

and
2.Marsellus Wallace has a mysterious plaster on the back of his head throughout. (the first shot you see of him is a full view of the plaster).
Supposedly where it was removed.

sounds a bit odd but who knows

It was a good few year ago now and the tests came back OK, but I still stick with the quote!

You're right about good films making an impact on you - it's something I've always believed. When I was a kid I remember watching lots of old films with my mum and dad - particularly the James Cagney movies.

When I was about 11 years old I saw the film 'Angels with Dirty Faces', and remember spending a lot of time thinking about the ending - did Rocky go to the chair a 'real' coward or did he go to the electric chair playing the part of a cowrd because his friend asked him to to put the boys who idolised him off of a life of crime?

I guess that that was the first film that made me think like that, and I think it had something to do with my current love of film noir and the 1930s/40s 'social realism' films.

What is your favourite film and why?

I, personally, can't decide! I like all the classic films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones., but they aren't my favourite films.

It changes a lot of the time, at the moment it's a film from Germany called 'Goodbye Lenin', It's set after the collapse of soviet russia in (the former) East Europe and it's all about a young mans efforts to shield his mother from the changes that have happened when she wakes up after eight months in a coma.

I think it's a great film as it mixes Drama and Humor effectively. I can't really think of any other good reasons, but bear with me as I'm only 16 :( .

What about you *ahem* older filmgoers?

I like to think that this is a place that anyone can drop into for a chat, and not feel self conscious. A bit like "Cheers" :D  ( Does that make me Carla? :suspect: )

Favourite at the moment is Fitzcarraldo, because I saw it for the first time the other week and was so blown away I had to watch it again as soon as I had time (even though it is nearly 3 hours). It came in a 6-DVD Werner Herzog/Klaus Kinski boxed set which was a bargain at £19.99 from HMV.

Second favourite... probably City of Lost Children.

3rd... oh, I dunno, could be any of thousands. Kitchen Stories, a Swedish film which was on at the Showroom last year, is probably up there somewhere.

Always hard to pick favourites but three that always make a top 10 or Top 5 are:

Wings of Desire
Slow moving and rather beautiful film with a star turn from Peter Falk and music from Nick Cave (the US remake is appalling, avoid like the plague).

Harold & Maude
Bible black romantic comedy from the early 70's...Bud Cort is a star in it, still laugh like a drain when I watch his various faked suicides

LOTR
It's Tolkien...it's Peter Jackson; what's not to love?

Honourable mentions:
Spinal Tap, Once were warriors, Punch Drunk Love, Alien, Fight Club, Brain Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Angel Heart, Theatre of Blood, Dr Phibes Rides Again, Full Metal Jacket etc etc

It is really hard to pick out just 3 films, many of my first choices have already been mentioned loads of times (Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Shrek 2 to namre but a few). But I keep coming back to :

Harvey
It's a Wonderful Life
The Santa Clause

Pirates of the Caribbean comes very high on the list - after all, with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in it, how could it fail!

Gladys

This is a hard one, cos there are loads of great films that I've seen. However, top 3 favourites:

1. Shawshank Redemption - which believe it or not I only saw a couple of years ago for the first time
2. Billy Elliot
3. Planes, trains, and automobiles

Only 3! This is going to be tough!

I must have a Tarrantino film, so that's got to be "Pulp Fiction".
I must have humour, so that has to be "Priscilla - Queen of the Desert".

Now what else to choose?

What about a musical with favourite tunes? Of course....favourite tunes = "The Sound of Music", or maybe "Singing in the Rain"?
Or what about a scarey thriller? In which case it would have to be either the classic Alfred Hitchcock film "Psycho", or "The Silence of the Lambs".
Or what about a film with a favourite actor? That would have to be Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate", or "Tootsie" or better still "Midnight Cowboy".
Or what about an adaptation of a famous novel? That would have to be "Dr Zhivago".
Or what about an animation? "Monsters Inc." or "Toy Story" or the Walt Disney classic "Fantasia"?

I knew it would be difficult to choose only 3!

Or what about a film by a favourite producer? In which case it has to be the late Stanley Kubrick and "Eyes Wide Open"
Or a good war film? In which case it's Stanley Kubrick again, and "Full Metal Jacket".
Or what about a film that makes you have a good cry, time after time after time? That has got to be "Schindler's List".
Or what about a film that just has a cracking good story, and holds the attention throughout? That's got to be "Trainspotting", or even "The Full Monty".
Or a comedy? How about the classics - "Duck Soup" with the Marx Brothers or "Some Like It Hot"?
Or a sci-fi film "2001 A Space Odyssey" or "Aliens"

This is really hard!

What about a foreign film? That has to be "Amores Perros"
What about a film that I never got round to seeing, like "Gandhi" or "A Streetcar Named Desire"?

Ah ha. Now I know what my third choice is! When I was a kid, I remember seeing this French film. It was about a little boy and his red ballon. A gang of kids puncture the red balloon, and it deflates. The boy is heartbroken. Suddenly, every balloon being held by a kid in Paris breaks free, descends on the little boy, and carries him away into the sky. I saw this film about 50 years ago, and it has left a lasting impression on me. That's the film I will have as my third choice. One problem - does anyone know what it is called?

Ever changing but here goes....in no particular order:

Dr Strangelove - 'Ok, you're sorrier than me, Dimitri, but I'm sorry too'
Singing In The Rain - a 'postmodern' masterpiece before anyone invented the term
The Big Lebowski - 'eight year olds, Dude'

Spot on, Lord Snooty!

A marvellous film, quintessential old-style Hollywood and yet so far ahead of its time.

Heres some of mine

Falling down - Michael Douglas...One of my faves of all time, simple plot yet extremely effective

Drunken Master - Jackie Chan... Classic Jackie at his best in the days that his films were good.

The Day The Earth Stood Still... The only Black and White film that I like. Ive got no idea why I like it, but for some reason I just love it.

The Great Escape... Dont think I need to say much about this film, Im sure many will agree it is brilliant and a classic.

Friday - Ice Cube...Very funny film, funny all the way through

My favourite movie is 'Scarface' starring Al Pacino. Wasn't that popular on release but has become a cult classic.

But when it comes to the "best ever film" most people in the know will pick 'Citizen Kane', 'tho I have to say i've still not got round to seeing it. Has anyone here seen it?
