My favourite movie is 'Scarface' starring Al Pacino. Wasn't that popular on release but has become a cult classic.

But when it comes to the "best ever film" most people in the know will pick 'Citizen Kane', 'tho I have to say i've still not got round to seeing it. Has anyone here seen it?

Yes - it's always been my Dad's favourite film and I've seen it a number of times, including a special showing at the Showroom a couple of years ago. It was incredible to see on the Big Screen.

It really is a trailblazer of a film - it's full of 'cliches' that weren't cliches when it was made - it's just that it's been copied so many times since!

The opening scene is breathtaking - absolutely beautiful cinematography. I didn't really appreciate how amazing it was until I saw it at the cinema. Kane's mansion is seen in the distance, and the camera gradually moves in closer and closer. It's difficult to convey the effect in words - you really have to see it to understand.

To me, the subject matter is almost immaterial (although very controversial in its day) - the important thing is that it is a blueprint for how to make a great film. Groundbreaking.

2) City of Angels
3) Starsky and Hutch.

1) The Game
2) Kill Bill (The whole thing)
3) Cube
4) Shawshank Redemption

If anyone hasn't seen 1 or 3 you just have to see them.

The Game is excellent and must have the most plot twists of any film. To be honest there are a couple of other David Fincher films that nearly made it. All his stuff is great, favourite director closely followed by Quentin Tarantino. Cube is a great use of lights and a big box which is the only set used throughout the whole film.

I've watched The Cube more than once and the word 'bizarre' comes to mind. It really didn't help matters when some clever spark thought to do another which if possible was even more 'Bizarre'
What's wrong with 'Bambi' by the way? Everyone knows this has to be the greatest film of all time even if I did forget to mention it in my previous post.

City of Angels isn't bad but if you like it you should watch the film it's based on. Wings of Desire is truely superb. The filming is cinemagraphically outstanding. The bit with the Angels is in Black and White to reinforce their lack of emotion.

Watch it, you'll agree it's ground breaking

Like most, I have a very varied list, but if we're going on pure re-watchability, then it has to be the Back to the Future Trilogy.

It's a sci-fi comedy action romance adventure - what more could you ask for?

timo
30-10-2005, 00:35
Fellini's 'Amarcord', especially the 'big tits' scene. Then 'A Clockwork Orange' for the ultraviolence and the old in-out, in-out. Thirdly, one would choose 'Taxi Driver' for De Niro's brooding presence as Travis Bickle. Fourthly, 'Goodfellas', especially Joe Pesci's terrifying portrayal of the psychopathic 'Tommy'. Fifth might be 'Pardon Us', Laurel and Hardy's first full length feature film.

I also love 'Apocolypse Now', 'L'Age D'Or', 'Un Chien Andalou', 'The Passage'[Malcolm McDowell as an SS Officer], 'Monty Python and The Holy Grail', 'Hannibal', 'Silence of the Lambs',' Manhatten' [Woody Allen], 'Zulu', 'Brighton Rock', 'The Third Man', 'Brief Encounter', 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', 'The Life of Brian', 'Bedazzled' [the original with Cook and Moore], and any Laurel and Hardy.

At the moment:

Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
Batman Begins
Mask of Zorro

I recently aquired Star Wars 3 and Batman on Region 1 DVD and they're both top films... If you don't have a multi-region DVD player, Star Wars is out tomorrow, and Batman came out last week on R2.

I thought Batman Begins was fantastic. It really captured the dark nature of the character. I just hope that they don't start making a load of shoddy sequels again. If they can keep Nolen and Bale on board it's got great potential.

Hmm, the ending of Batman Begins does seem to suggest a sequel featuring the Joker.. Hope they get Jack Nicholson back for the part if they do a Joker themed sequel... He's the only guy who ever did the Joker role justice apart from Cesar Romero in the 60s camp as a Butlins in high season TV series.

If you haven't seen Ray, it's killer! Jamie Foxx definitely deserved his Oscar for that one.

I did like Ali. And Will Smith's acting was top notch I must say (not a big fan of his), but I felt more could've been done with that film. An above average/decent film which could've been great.
