There are lots the of things that can be grown in pots and even loo pretty in pots. you can make whole salad pots or hanging baskets. You can even plant nasturtiums in your salad baskets and eat them. Strawberries, peas, tomatoes. The list is endless. Even potatoes and carrots can be grown in pots too. Apparently carrot fly cant fly higher then 2 feet do tubs put higher then that would be great. You can get books on growing food and plants in pots too. Just remember to keep them well watered.
almost anything if you can get the right sized container!
You can grow potatoes in old compost bags (double them up with lots of drainage holes)
Carrots do well in pots, especially if it's over a foot high as this helps prevent carrot fly.
even peas and beans up canes in a big tub.
lettuces and tomotoes can grow in baskets and tubs
I do all my strawberries in hanging baskets too.
You can get dwarf varieties of apples and pears to grow in tubs, although I've not tried that yet.

thanks what and where can i get a book from. and also what type of pots do i need. i am thinking of new potatoes, strawberries, herbs, red onions, for now. Cheers
lots of people grow things in the black buckets that you can get from Morrisons - they are generally sold x 8 for around £1 I think. They are like florists buckets. Only problem with container gardening is that you need to water a lot - they soon dry out with the wind and sun.
I'm going to plant some carrots into some old compost bags, but that might not be such a nice option for your back garden !
If you turn the compost bag inside out then it's a little more attractive than all the writing.
You can buy special potato bags, but they work just as well in the compost bags. you plant the seed potatoes into compost and John Innes. and earth up as they grow, unravelling the bag till you get to the top then harvest what you want when you want them after the flowers.
This will work in tubs too, but try to get as big pot as possible, and remember to keep covering the growth up to, but not including the leaves with more and more compost. You should also keep in mind that any potatoes that come into the light will go green and you can't eat them.
Your herbs and strawbs can both be done in hanging baskets, keeping the berries out of the way of slugs and snails. But I have done them in the cheap tubs you can buy from wilko's (just check they have drainage holes, and if not pop some in).
You could try the library for a book, or buy one of the 'Expert' books. Or google it.
