View Full Version : A cry out to Cafe Nero!

We are seriously lacking a decent chain coffee shop in sheffield.
we currently have the choice of

Starbucks - evil franchise market scum

Coffee Revolution - pseudo socialist "we don't actually listen to what you order" scum

FOB - My preference, not due to the coffee, but all the lovely staff with whom I talk regularly

Pollards - Decent coffee but can anybody say "welcome to the 1950s!"

Costa Coffee - come on everybody, lets drink gravel!

I think the city would benefit hugely from having a Caffe Neros - proper coffee at vaguely reasonable prices and always impressively decked out inside

why oh why do they ignore our city???

we should start a petition..

Who are they? Any good? I must admit, my knowledge of anything other than what goes on in south/west sheffield is pretty dismal.

http://www.caffenero.com/

i think they're fairly decent to their suppliers etc. a quick google search told me nothing but that they dont use GM stuff for anything

no human rights abuses etc. have been documented

their coffee is nice, they usually employ italian workers, make proper coffee and serve ultra strong ultra concentrated espressos (known as ristrettos) theyre generally in or around train stations.

there are about 20 in london, and at least one in every southern city.

There is a huge one in glasgow and in various other cities in the north too

but none here :(

Oh, I'd back you on that one. Spent many a happy hour in various Caffe Neros when I lived down south. Great coffee, and the predominanty italian staff made the place seem more laid back compared to some chains.

There is a big one in Piccadilly Gardens in M'cher - a very welcome sight having emerged off the train!

Cheers, Carrie

Well I've news that the OP will think is 'good'.

I'm told that Café Nero is to open up in Broomhill soon.

Right next door to Remo's. :shakes:

Thankfully, Ray makes the very very best coffee in Sheffield.

Why on earth search out chains when you have The Lounge, Moco's, Nona's and Remo's???

Why not make it at home?

I don't rate Cafe Nero. Went in there in London and I nearly lost my insides when they told me how much two (very small) cups of milky coffee would be. Alas, the only places I could find for a brew were equally expensive coffee bars. I find the whole coffee thing really pretentious, and to be honest it all tastes much the same to me. But if you're into it, there's plenty of locally based coffee bars, it's not the brand name that makes it taste any better, you can still get someone who's no good at pouring hot water on beans whatever place you buy it in.

no dude, coffee is more than that!

Go into town and drink coffee in costa, then starbucks, then FOB, and you'll see the difference

There's about four Caffe Neros in Leeds, at least five in Manchester and around three in Nottingham. Even Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield have Caffe Neros.

Why do we need another chain? Here we go again cloning our city centres. Give me 1 Bragazzis on Abbeydale Road for 10 Caffe Neros. Maybe it's generational but I can't help thinking the whole coffee culture thing is one giant emperors new clothes rip off. Still, whatever floats your boat.

I quite like Starbucks. The coffee isn't that bad and the prices aren't so horrendous when you think about the price of a pint nowadays (and I don't drink)....

I used to go into coffee rev near the cathedral all the time before it became Fob... Then the servings got smaller and prices went up and it was a while before I found another decent coffee house.

At least with Starbucks you know what you're getting (whether you like them or not, at least they're consisten). And it's not as bad as New York where they are some blocks with more than 2 Starbucks on them!

There's 87 McDonalds in New York City... I'd hate to think how many Starbucks there are.

I do agree with the "clone" city. We've got Starbucks and Subways popping up all over the place now.

Im with Karl on this one....to some extent! YES! Sheffield does need better coffee and yes Nero's is ok as far as chain stores go but surely a local coffee shop for local people would better suit the good people of Sheffield??!
What might be easier is to start on-line petitions against all the shocking coffee shops (of which there are many!) and ask them to get some training and a little appreciation for the state of the products they are trying to sell!
A couple of people on this thread have talked about coffee being the "emperor's new clothes" and "snobbery" being associated with it......I can only ask these people to take it from the people who know....coffee is capable of being SO good! If you're not a coffee fan its difficult to appreciate just how rich and varied it can be. Imagine if all you ever ate was rich handmade belgian chocolates.....there are hundereds of different types.....some only slightly diferent from each other but cos you eat so many chockies you appreciate the diferent qualities of each type. Then imagine someone gives you an American chocolate bar (which are on the whole disgusting!) and tells you that is chocolate!! You're not gonna be happy with a Herschey bar whn you know how tasty those belgian truffles are! Now imagine that when you go to a shop to buy some of the good stuff they have nothing on the shelves but Herscheys!!!! Every shop....the same story......!

Thats what its like for coffee drinkers in Sheffield.....

Welcome to our world

One more thing......

Mr.Chris!!!! hello!!!!!?!!!!!

In one breah you sing the praises of McStarbucks (over priced, bad beans, no barrista skills.....Whatsoever.......) then you complain about "clone cities".....if you dont like the way McStarbucks takes over a city, multiplying like bacteria before spreading to the next concentration of 20 to 35 year olds with more money than taste.....then DONT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!

If they didnt sell so many flavourless over sized, over priced drinks they wouldnt have as bigger profits as they do and then they wouldnt spread like wildfire.

Shudda stuck with The Rev mate.....at least they employ people who are trained to be barristas rather than McButton Pushers

I enjoy a nice cup of coffee but if I'm going to be asked to pay over £1 for it I'd want at least a half pint mug rather than the rather twee things that seem to serve as coffee cups in a lot of the cafes in the city.
I don't think the city needs more coffee emporiums as there is only so much chrome furniture I can stand. There is something about some coffee shops that seem to bring in the 'bohemian' type customer who will sit there and somehow look veery....... [I can't think of the word] snooty, idle rich, pretentious, luckily these people at the moment do seem to be in the minority.

I know someone who works for Caffe Nero and apparently one is being lined up to open in Sheffield, although I don't know when. I don't understand why people slag off Starbucks but are happy with Coffee Rev, Caffe Nero etc. Why are Starbucks so much worse?

I expect the people who hate Starbucks don't shop in McDonalds, Nike, Adidas, Gap or even M&S come to think of it. Oh, and neither would they invest their money using HSBC, one of the most corrupt companies on the planet with a record of human rights abuses, or any of the other big banks. It's so hypocritical! They only make coffee for pity's sake, they're hardly responsible for all the world's ills!

I don't mean any personal offense at anyone, of course this is just my opinion and the good thing is, we have the choice still to shop at independent places. One of my faves is Utopia, its really cool (although bit too expensive for every day!)

I presume you won't be going to the soon-to-be-opened Starbucks opposite the City Museum & Weston Park? ;)

primarily I don't go to starbucks because its coffee tastes like gravel.
but incidentally I havent eaten at mcdonalds since i was 11 or 12, have nothing made by adidas gap or M&S, bank at natwest (which is owned by the royal bank of scotland) and only have one pair of hugely reduced (we're talking £15) nike trainers, due to being in desperate need of shoes.

I dont claim any moral high ground because Iknow there are probably many things that I own that were made by starving underpaid workers (such as computer components, for example)

From a moral point of view though I dont like the marketing tactics of starbucks (search for a thread about subways opening in city centre to see my ...very strong... views)

But the taste alone is enough for me not to touch it with a bargepole

One positive argument I see about the arrival of Starbucks in the city is based on the idea that these chains are barometers of a city's financial wellbeing. Since their decisions as whether to start up in a city is based on profit the notable absence of such chains until very recently suggest that they had a poor opinion of Sheffield's economic potential.

The city therefore must be doing something right if Starbucks have finally arrived.

Dear Alasdair

Thank you for your email. Sheffield is a top priority for us. In fact,
my colleagues were there the other week. We are looking for more than
one store in different parts of it. We have nothing on the immediate
horizon at present but we are positive in the hope that we will open in
there by the end of the year.

I hope this helps

Kind regards
