ok, quite frustratingly I met two guys off sheffield forum last night who knew who i was (due to me using this alias elsewhere) but would not let on who they were at all!

I find the idea of this very unfair indeed!

do you keep your online name secret? is it a big issue for you?
(and by the way stuart/dave I hope you're as hungover as I am :( )

im not bothered at all that folk know who i am, its no big secret where i work. ive met a few peeps off here that ive known about but i might have spoken to a few that have not let on who they were.
i dont say anything on here that i wouldnt say in real life to peoples faces so ive got nowt to hide for :D

I think it's quite useful letting people know who you are. I managed to meet someone off the forum who lives next door but 3 from me and he has given me help on a problem with getting Sky TV.

If you've nothing to hide then whats the problem?

I think i use this alias everywhere *shrug*

im trying to persuade them to come to the meet up at the cat temorah.

can anyone gimme a quick summary of the regulars so that I can know who to avoid? ;)

I have no problem with people knowing who I am, I do offer them a discount if they tell me their forum name so I can put faces to names and find out how much the forum works for me
:)

Which market do you stand, and what do you sell? You will be flooded out with discount wanting forummers :D

No, really, do. You'll end up walking home with a hand fan thing with flashing lights and wondering how the hell you came to have it...

Aliases can be an amusing insight as to how people percieve their own personas.. As you can see I'm bland and boring with no personality so have to use my own name...

Seriously though, I registered with my name before I really knew anything about the forum and would love to depersonalise so that its not dead obvious to those who know me who I am - does anyone know how to do this?

melthebell

i think to change your nick, the only way to do it is rejoin with another one and scrap that one :(

you can email help@sheffieldforum.co.uk and request they change your name for you....I changed mine from ShieshUK just to Shiesh....as it is obvious I am UK but it was habit as I use that ID elsewhere on the internet!!

Well mine is soooo boring (bit like me I suppose)! Hels, short for Helen - aint anything special.

I think I act quite differently on the forum than I do in 'real life' I tend to be a bit reticent on the forum, get chance to think before I write i suppose. Where as in real life, I speak my mind more often. Not sure why that is really

hmmmmm normally people on the net are more up front and abrasive when in real life they are shy ........er

That two guys might be those whose public decency in real life would be hurt by their own rude posts, or those too timid to let on who they are. I'm the latter..

I was stimulated by this thread and took a look at issues of internet persona and anonymity half day. There are so many articles and bloggers that I can't read all, but I read a person describing internet with a proverb "Fish can't live in too clean water", I like it.

Or maybe they were just winding CarlMalibu up? In a nice way, of course...

I agree that the only reason that you wouldnt share your sf name is if you want the anonynimity to post things that they wouldnt normally have the bottle to say in real life, if the were faced with the person they're replying to.
Or they were just trying to wind you up ;)

Thanks for the advice Shiesh, I'll give it a go, now all I have to do is think up something witty that sums up my person. Ummm.... errrr.... this might take a while:help:

By the way, my Mum always says "shiesh" to express disbelief or exasperation; or with a slightly different intonation sarcastic suprise in a gee wizz kind of way

I'm a lot more argumentative on here than in real life. I'm like I was in my early 20's on here. In real life I tend to just laugh at people having heated arguments.

Life's too short.

I used to be Sarah but I got renamed Splodge in the classic rock bar.....like anyone was allowed to keep their dignity in there!

I use an internet name because I am a different person on the internet than I am off the internet. For one thing, I find it harder to make myself heard, although I have taught myself to write without a lisp. I chose the name aristocratic because I suffer from delusions of grandeur

Karl Malibu.
I have a drink named after me too.
A Mr Chinnery is a Britvic orange, a tonic water and an orange and passionfruit J2O in a pint glass.
Like me it's expensive.

A few of my mates know what I post under and I have no problem with people knowing that - I rarely give away any personal detail on here and will not enter into certain topics so have no worries about being identified from my posts.

My life away from the forum is very private and my friends and family don't know every facet of what I do so the forum is a nice contrast for me as I can be as transparent as I like.

I like the idea of your porn name being the name of your first pet and the name of the first road you lived on. This would make me "Ming Melton"
