Hey

I've just bought this from ebuyer this week.
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=74821

Anyone bought one from them previously because try as I might, I cant get the damned thing to keep reading my hard drive that I put in it!!

Its a brand new formatted 80gb Hard drive and it seems to read it fine for a while, until after about 2 mins, it looses the connection to the HD and wont read again till I power the caddy down and turn it back on again.

I want to use it for transferring PS2 ISO images from my PC to my HD caddy for importing into my PS2.

Its bloody annoying and Im guessing its summat to do with me having Windows XP Home with SP2??

Any ideas please.. before I send the sodding thing back to ebuyer.

Thanking you all in advance.

Firstly did you read the reviews about the product ? I have just read them and found them a little inconclusive, not a particularly good product overall seemed to be the general opinion.

First thing to consider is.. do you have usb2 ports ? and if you do are you using a Dell PC ?

If you are plugging the drive into a port on the mainboard (the integrated ones) can you try it on a dedicated usb card ?. Have you tried unplugging any other usb devices that are connected ?

Regarding the reviews on Ebuyer, ignore those for the majority. I've noticed that most people just don't read the instructions. I've had a few things from Ebuyer that have had some inconclusive\bad reviews but I've never experienced any of the problems described, apart from the ones where people try to get items to do things they're not meant to then complain!

I've had similar problems with my 2.5" drive caddy, it sort of works a bit on some machines but usually it just whirs a bit then the PC shuts down. Tends to work fine on the same machine if I plug a powered USB hub in for the drive to run through.

It does sound more like a problem with your USB rather than the caddy. I've had similar issues with USB peripherals, best bet is as parrotface suggests - try a PCI USB card (if you're not already).

I've had similar problems like this with a few caddies. I think it's more of a Windows issue than hardware as I don't recall it happening on Win2000.

I did a search a few months ago on Google and it brought up dozens of forum posts from people with similar problems, but no common solution was found.

I've recently given up on caddies and bought a USB to IDE cable from http://www.directusbstore.co.uk/

uninstalled them and had a play and now they are fine.

i think the 1st time i installed software and that was the problem.

just plug and played and never looked back
