I recently acquired a used laptop. I installed XP Pro on it but for some reason there were no audio drivers or video drivers installed. I've installed these now and everything is running fine.
The Problem:
The screen resolution is a mighty 1600x1400 :o (my poor eyes)
I've tried absolutely every tip/trick/setting and tweak available (that i can find) to try and change the setting to something smaller.
At the minute i have the DPI set at 127 pixels per inch and icons at 120%. The text on the forum is still probably a size 1 (in every browser)
If i change the resolution to 1024x760 etc., the window just shrinks and i'm left with all the icons/text the same size but i now have a huge black border around the screen.
I found a setting in my Bios to stretch the screen but it refuses to apply. I can select it but the setting doesn't work.
My Dilemma:
I have no way to guarantee that the model number of my laptop is the right one. The drivers worked but the Bios is a different kettle of fish isn't it?
Can i cause irreparable damage by installing a dodgy Bios?
*Takes a deep breath*:hihi:

OOI, what size is the screen? I've got 1600x1200 on a 15" laptop and it's all fine here.

To ID the machine, download and run Lavasofts Everest Home Edition (http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en). Generally works for me for finding drivers and ID'ing bits etc...

The problem with laptop screens is that like TFT's they are made for a set resolution, and with laptop screens, if you set the resolution to anything below what the screen is, quite often it will only use the number of pixels in the resolution, so you end up with a black border. I think there is a way to stretch it, but i can't remember off hand.

This is a 15" screen too Lurch but the resolution of 1600x1400 is killing my mince pies :( I managed to set it to 1400x1050 so it's not as bad at the minute.
The strange thing is, the computer icons, text etc are fine and 'some' of the text online is fine. However, the text on the forum is miniscule :? The only text that is normal size is in the site menu.

Hit the nail on the head there Joel
There is the option to stretch the screen in my Bios but as i said, it isn't working :(
