Hi,

Simple question, I am looking at employing a plumbers labourer on an ad-hoc basis. What can I expect to pay the lad (or lass!) for a days work?

Thanks

Sam

hi
This all depends how long they had been doing the job and if they have any experience
general labour could be from £6 - £7 per hour

hope this helps
many thanks SJT

we used to, a long time ago, pay £25 to £35 a day depending on experience - of course you have minimum wage now which is what £5.50?? maybe more so at a guess that would be your minimum??

Qualified tradesmen are available for £60 per day at the moment. If your lucky, you'll find someone decent (although there are plenty of muppets out there, but you'll suss them out straight away).

Sorry, I've just choked on my tea. A qualified tradesman for £60...less tax, insurance, running costs etc would mean net earnings of 35-40 a day. £200 per week.

I haven't been on this site very long but that post is ridiculous.

In reply to the original topic. Generally I pay my labourers £80 a day for 8hours. 50 for Sat morning and 65 for sunday morning. 8am to midday.

If the work is sporadic I pay £100 a day for single days. Thay have to get themselves out of bed afterall and I need reliability. But if all you are after is a spotty teen to dig, fetch and carry then 6-7 quid and hour.

Hang on i'll check last weeks accounts.

2 x Days labour (sub contractor) = Total £120.
Now if my maths is correct thats £60 per day.

So, while you are sat on your backside having a go, I assume you have earnt nowt today while someone else earnt (according to you) £35-40.
£35-40 is better than nothing (unless I've cocked up my maths again).

I am contacted EVERY week by people from here looking for work, only today someone has offered their services for £50 per day. I employ people as/when I am able and re-employ those who come up to standard and then pay them the correct going rate.

I consider myself luck to be in the position I am in but work hard and put in the hours. You aint going to get any work sat on your PC supping tea coppertop.

One thing you need to take into account is because it is an ad-hoc basis you should be paying a small premium for the convience to you as you aren't having to carry them when work is not forthcoming if they were employed by you full time.

Also you should take into consideration the fact they have overheads of their own such as paying their accountant, tax, national insurance, e.t.c.

The suggestion of paying £6-£7 for irregular work minus overhead cost will no doubt in a roundabout way mean you are paying less than minimum wage.

lol...funny how 'sitting on my arse' at 2pm means I hadnt been working. Thats the joy of working for yourself.

If you can get a 'QUALIFIED TRADESMAN' to work for £60 then fairplay to you. I feel sorry for the poor sod thats being taken advantage of though.

As I said, if they prove themselves to be worthy, I re employ and pay the correct going rate. To many chancers around that are fleecing me even when I pay £60.00.
